Background: Prehypertension alone does not associated with mortality, but when along with other atherogenic indices, there is a significant increase of mortality. Hence, early recognition in young adults is needed in order to prevent the future outcome. This study was done to evaluate prehypertension along with atherogenic indices in obese young adults. Method: This study was done as the further analysis of the previous study that has been published. 70 young adults (18–25 years old) were included in this cross-sectional study from 2009–2011. The Lipid profile and fasting glucose after fasting for 14–16 hours was examined in laboratory, while LDL was calculated with Friedewalds formula. Blood pressure was measured with appropriate method using mercury sphygmomanometer. We used JNC VII to classify blood pressure and NCEP III to classify lipid profile. Result: Prehypertension and stage I hypertension were found in 57% (n = 40) and 14% (n = 10), respectively. Hypertriglyseridemia, high cholesterol, low HDL, high LDL, high fasting glucose were found in 17%, 24%, 20%, 57%, 3%, respectively. Median of triglyseridemia among normal, prehypertension and stage I hypertension were 67 (40–215), 88 (37–219), 92 (46–176) mg/dL, p = 0.364. Mean of cholesterol among them were 175 ± 29.6, 175 ± 37.6, 162 ± 35.1 mg/dL, p = 0.601. Mean of HDL were 51 ± 9.9, 48 ± 10.7, 49 ± 12.3 mg/dL, p = 0.696. Mean of LDL were 105 ± 25.8, 106 ± 32.8, 95 ± 28.2 mg/dL, p = 0.563. Median of fasting glucose were 82 (72–97), 84 (72–117), 89 (83–100) mg/dL, p = 0.031. Post-hoc analysis showed that fasting glucose was significantly different in normal vs stage I hypertension (p = 0.008) and prehypertension vs stage I hypertension (p = 0.021). Conclusion: Prehypertension and high level LDL were high among obese young adults. There was no significant difference in lipid profile among blood pressure group while fasting glucose was significantly different which may associated with vascular reactivity that was related with insulin resistance.
