Simone Cristina Ramos; Jane Mendes Ferreira; Fernando Antonio Prado Gimenez

The aim of the paper was to test the validity and reliability of a Portuguese version of the Team Factors Inventory/TFI. This inventory measures the propensity of a team towards creative leadership and consists of a paper and pen measure with 37 items in a Likert-type scale. The method involved review of literature on creative leadership, backtranslation of the inventory, and data analysis through descriptive statistics, hypotheses testing, factor analysis, analysis of variance, using as control variables, sex, and type of enterprise. The sample consisted of 114 respondents, being 73 owner-managers of high-tech incubated firms and 41 owner-managers of service firms. Analyses indicated that the translated version into Portuguese of the inventory reached satisfactory levels of validity and reliability. This means that TFI may be applied in a cultural context different from its origin.

Validation of the team factors inventory in Brazilian companies

Fernando Antonio Prado Gimenez; Edmundo Inácio Júnior

The aim of this paper is to test the validity and reliability of a Portuguese version of the Team Factors Inventory/TFI derived from the Creative Leadership Model. This inventory measures the propensity of a team towards creative leadership and consists of a paper and pen measure with 37 items on a Likert-type scale. The literature concerning creativity in organizational studies has focused mainly on the contribution the individual makes to innovation and technical change. The model of Creative Leadership, on the other hand, has turned attention to group behaviour and team management. The model has been recently proposed in England and there are no literature reports on its application in a language other than English. The method involved a review of the literature on creative leadership, backtranslation of the inventory, and data analysis through descriptive statistics, hypotheses testing, factor analysis, and analysis of variance, using as control variables, sex, and type of enterprise. The sample consisted of 115 respondents, with 73 owner-managers of high-tech incubated firms and 42 owner-managers of service firms. Analyses indicated that the translated version Portuguese of the inventory reached satisfactory levels of validity and reliability. This means that the TFI may be applied in a cultural context other than the original.

Innovation ecosystems: a meta-synthesis

Marcos Ferasso; Adriana Roseli Wünsch Takahashi; Fernando Antonio Prado Gimenez

This metasynthesis aims to build a theory on the concept of innovation ecosystem from the state of the art of qualitative case studies available in indexed scientific production using interpretive synthesis (Hoon, 2013).,This research was conducted by the postulates of the metasynthesis method (Hoon, 2013) to generate theory from qualitative case studies. The authors retrieved 77 research papers from databases, of which 6 were used for synthesis purposes. Each selected research paper reported one or more cases, which were analyzed separately. At the final stage, a data synthesis was structured and the cases were crossed, which allowed the development of a schematic representation and a theoretical construction of the innovation ecosystem concept. The approach used in this research is a metatheoretical assumption from economics and management and ecology to explore the theoretical gap in the concept of innovation ecosystems.,There is not yet a conceptual consensus on the term, which sometimes leads researchers to address partial or complementary concepts. The analysis identified constitutive elements of an innovation ecosystem that lead to structuring a framework of organic and dynamic interrelationships that a given organization has with various external organizations, allowing the creation of innovative products in a faster way.,This paper helps scholars and researchers consider a new metatheoretical perspective to analyze dynamics, constitutive elements and multilevels of an innovation ecosystem.,For practitioners, this paper sheds lights on the importance of recognizing a systemic consideration of innovation ecosystems that falls in global relationships, industry dynamics and identification of main global–local actors/enablers to produce innovations internally at a given organization.,The novelty of this paper lies in a more delineated definition and a schematic representation of an innovation ecosystem based on a global–local perspective of product creation and manufacturing and interactions that a given company has, regardless of the geographical location of its dispersed strategic partners.

Understanding Business Models for Mobile Government: the Case of SMS at the Paraná Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

Beatriz Barreto Brasileiro Lanza; J. Ramon Gil-Garcia; Fernando Antonio Prado Gimenez

Mobile technologies are growing rapidly in all countries, but they are particularly important for developing countries. Since more and more citizens are using cell phones and other mobile devices, it seems clear that there is an opportunity for government to provide services using related technologies, what has recently been called mobile government. Based on configuration theory, concepts from business models, and a set of individual interviews, this paper proposes a preliminary business model for mobile government, particularly using SMS (short message service) technology. The paper shows how the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the Paraná State in Brazil has been using an innovative model to deliver services to citizens, which public managers can use as a model to better understand and help them begin a mobile government project using this technology. Therefore, the paper proposes a business model and tests it for the case of the DMV in the state of Paraná in Brazil.

Understanding the Potential of Mobile Government in Developing Countries: The Case of Short Message Service (SMS) Use by a Brazilian State Government

Beatriz Barreto Brasileiro Lanza; J. Ramon Gil-Garcia; Fernando Antonio Prado Gimenez

Mobile technologies are growing rapidly in all countries, but they are particularly important for developing countries. Since more and more citizens are using cell phones and other mobile devices, it seems clear that there is an opportunity for government agencies to provide information and services using these technologies. Despite the relative success of some growing applications and the great number of mobile phones, mobile government has not evolved as one of the main channels for interacting with citizens. Aiming to understand the configuration of mobile government projects in practice, our research question is: how environment, structure, leadership, strategy and sustainability configure and interact in mobile government business models? The research has a qualitative character with multiple cases studies based on the analysis of twenty Mobile Government Projects using short message service (SMS) in the government of Paraná, Brazil. The life cycles of the twenty cases were identified and represented, from the birth to the survival phase. The major contribution of this paper is proposing a Dynamic Business Model for Mobile Government using SMS technology, based on the phases of the project life cycle.

Gabriel Varea Gonçalves; Saulo Fabiano Amâncio-Vieira; Gerson Antonio Melatti; Fernando Antonio Prado Gimenez; Letícia Fernandes de Negreiros

This research seeks to verify the existence of different settings in the process of strategy formation in small enterprises in the service sector of Londrina/PR. Theoretical framework is based on studies of Cochia and Machado da Silva (2004) about the environmental context, Miles and Snow (1978) about four types of strategy, Carland, Carland and Hoy (1992, 1998) and Inacio and Gimenez (2004) to measure the entrepreneur index, and Bailey and Avery (1998) for the classification of strategic types. This research is classified as quantitative, descriptive and exploratory study. It was conducted a censos with the 70 service companies associated with CMEG / FECOMERCIO. The results demonstrate that most of the leaders of these companies have Entrepreneurial attitude, the main type of competitive strategy adopted was incremental, that the environmental context of companies is local, and the dominant dimension in the development of the strategy is the Prospector, in other words, companies are continually seeking to expand the range of products / services.
