An econometric analysis of urban households’ animal products consumption in Turkey

Goksel Armagan; Cuma Akbay

People in developing countries are increasing their consumption from the very low levels of the past, and they have a long way to go before coming near developed country averages. In this study, households’ animal products consumption patterns are analysed by using Linear Approximation of Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) and survey data collected from households in urban areas in Turkey. According to the results of the study, annual per capita consumption of animal products were 48.18 kg for milk, 26.89 kg for yogurt, 18.55 kg for cheese, 6.45 kg for meat, 22.11 kg for poultry and 10.05 kg for fish. Price elasticities were found to be lower than 1 for milk, yogurt, cheese, poultry and fish and higher than 1 for meat. Moreover, the impacts of socio-demographic factors on the demand for animal products were found to be very low. Determination of production targets and formulation of polices are possible by obtaining the proper information related to the livestock products.

Cost management strategy for enegy use in agriculture: EU Sample

Altuğ Özden; Goksel Armagan

Efficiency analysis is useful for all kinds of production. Outputs and inputs can be optimized by this analysis. In this way costs are also minimized. Many inputs are used in agriculture production and only purpose is to produce more. In agricultural production there are desirable and undesirable outputs. The amount of emissions comes from fossil fuels is an undesirable output. We must maximize the desirable outputs and minimize the undesirable outputs. Also, we need to minimize the inputs to minimize the costs. In this study, Data Envelopment Analysis and partial efficiency analysis was applied to determine the cost management. Two outputs and four inputs were detemined for the measurement of the cost efficiency. According to analysis, it is determined that, the EU countries must protect the capital stock optimization and decrease the energy usage about 29.81%, land usage about 64.80% and employment in agriculture about 35.62%.

Agricultural Multifunctionality and Care Farming: Insight from the UK

Paul Custance; Keith Walley; Gaynor Tate; Goksel Armagan

The purpose of the article is to provide insight into care farming and the role that it may play in agriltural multifunctionality. The paper outlines three case studies of care farming in the UK to compare and contrast the roles that such organizations may play in multifunctional agriculture. Although the work has the obvious limitation of being based on case-study care farms that are based in the UK, the findings are sufficiently generic to serve as valuable learning material for those interested in the subject and located anywhere in the world. The main finding from this study is that care farming can take many different forms but still contribute to agricultural multifunctionality. The study also confirms the important roles that economic support and favourable legislation play in successful care farming. The paper concludes that care farming is a legitimate form of agricultural multifunctionality but reminds those interested in setting up or promoting care farms of the need for a supportive economic and legislative environment. The paper provides contemporary insight into the concept of care farming as a form of agricultural multifunctionality. A number of generic points are made that should be of value to an international audience of academics researching in this area as well as students studying care farming and agricultural multifunctionality, farmers considering diversifying into care farming and politicians working to create a political and economic environment that may support care farms.
