A Multiperiod Location-Routing Problem Arising in the Collection of Olive Oil Mill Wastewater

The process by which olive oil is produced yields two by-products, one of which is the brown-coloured Olive Oil Mill Wastewater (OMWW) and has no direct use. OMWW is generally disposed of into soil or rivers, potentially contaminating the environment. OMWW can be treated using ultrafiltration facilities, but this requires that OMWW is collected from oil mills and delivered to the treatment facilities using a fleet of vehicles in an economically viable manner. Such considerations give rise to a multiperiod location-routing problem. This paper formally introduces the problem and proposes an adaptive large neighbourhood search metaheuristic for its solution. The algorithm is applied on a case study drawn from one of the major olive oil producing countries. The paper presents computational and managerial results.

Defining economic obstacles to the adoption of food safety systems in table olive processing firms

Purpose – The concept of food safety systems is increasing worldwide among farmers, manufactures, and processors and is also affecting consumer perspectives. This trend primarily impacts food businesses and table olive processing firms. The study seeks to explore the major economic obstacles to the adoption of food safety systems in table olive processing firms.Design/methodology/approach – All 59 table olive businesses in the Aydin Province of Turkey were included in the survey. In an effort to remove extraneous items and demonstrate internal consistency, Cronbachs alpha was calculated for each variable. Critical Evaluation for Adoption of Food Safety Systems in the Turkish Dairy and Meat Processing Businesses

Deniz baligi yetistiriciligi yapan toprak havuz isletmelerinde, isletme yoneticilerinin sahip olduklari risk kaynagi algilarinin ve risk yonetim stratejilerinin belirlenmesi oldukca onemlidir. Milas yoresindeki toprak havuzlarda deniz baligi yetistiriciligi son yillarda onemli bir gelisme gostermis olup, yorenin sosyo-ekonomik kalkinmasinda onemli bir gorev ustlenmistir. Yorede faaliyet gosteren, belirli bir ornekleme ile secilmis 46 isletme yoneticisi ile anket calismasi yapilmistir. Anket sorularinin hazirlanmasinda, esas olarak 5’li Likert olceginden yararlanilmistir. Calismada asagida belirtilmis olan konular uzerinde yogunlasilmistir. Bunlar: (1) Toprak havuz isletmeleri ve bunlarin yoneticilerinin sosyo-ekonomik karakteristikleri, (2) Yoneticilerin farkli risk kaynaklarina dair risk algilari, (3) Bu risk kaynaklari icin risk yonetim stratejileri. Calismada, aritmetik ortalama, yuzde oranlari gibi basit tanimlayici istatistik yontemler kullanilmistir. Sonuc olarak, arastirma yoresindeki toprak havuzlarda yapilan deniz baligi yetistiricilik sistemlerinde isletme yoneticilerinin sahip olduklari cesitli risk kaynagi algilarinin bulundugu ve bunlarin cozumune yonelik farkli risk yonetim stratejilerinin gelistirilmesi gerektigi tespit edilmistir.
