Effect of Vitamin E and Zinc Supplementation on Energy Metabolites, Lipid Peroxidation, and Milk Production in Peripartum Sahiwal Cows

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of vitamin E and zinc supplementation on energy metabolites, lipid peroxidation, and milk production in peripartum Sahiwal cows. For this, thirty-two pregnant dry Sahiwal cows were selected at sixty days prepartum and divided into four groups viz control, T1, T2, and T3 of eight each. Group T1 were supplemented with zinc at 60 ppm/d/cow, group T2 were supplemented with vitamin E at 1,000 IU/d/cow and group T3 were supplemented with combination of vitamin E at 1,000 IU/d/cow and zinc at 60 ppm/d/cow during d 60 prepartum to d 90 postpartum. Blood samples were collected on d −60, −45, −30, −15, −7, −3, 0, 3, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 with respect to day of parturition and analysed for glucose, non esterified fatty acid, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance. Body condition score was maintained significantly better (p<0.05) in T3 than in the control, T1 and T2 groups. Overall glucose level was higher (p<0.05) in T3 than control, T1, and T2 groups. Levels of nonesterified fatty acid, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance were lower (p<0.05) in T3 than control, T1, and T2 groups. Milk yield was higher (p<0.05) in T3 than control, T1, and T2 groups. In conclusion, the present study indicated that the supplementation of vitamin E and zinc in peripartum Sahiwal cows enhanced milk production by reducing negative energy balance.

Effect of additional vitamin E and zinc supplementation on immunological changes in peripartum Sahiwal cows

This study was conducted to exploit ameliorative effect of additional vitamin E and/or zinc supplementation on immune response of peripartum Sahiwal cows. Thirty-two pregnant dry Sahiwal cows were blocked into four treatment groups (n = 8), namely control, zinc (Zn), vitamin E (Vit E) and zinc + vitamin E (Zn + Vit E). Feeding regimen was same in all the groups except that the Sahiwal cows in the zinc-, vitamin E- and zinc + vitamin E-fed groups were additionally supplemented with 60 mg Zn/kg DM, 1000 IU vitamin E and 60 mg/kg + 1000 IU Zn + vitamin E, respectively, from day 60 pre-partum to day 90 post-partum. Blood samples were collected on days -60, -45, -30, -15, -7, -3, 0, 3, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 with respect to day of parturition and analysed for total immunoglobulin (TIG), immunoglobulin G (IgG), interleukin-2 (IL-2), vitamin E (Vit E) and zinc (Zn) status. Before calving, cows showed a decrease in plasma TIG, IgG, IL-2, Vit E and Zn levels. However, increased levels of plasma TIG, IgG, IL-2, Vit E and Zn were observed after calving. After calving, Sahiwal cows supplemented with Zn + Vit E had higher plasma TIG, IgG and IL-2 in comparison with cows of control and Zn + Vit E-fed groups. In the present study, plasma vitamin E level was higher in Vit E-fed and Zn + Vit E-fed cows; however, zinc level was higher in Zn- and Zn + Vit E-supplemented cows. In conclusion, a reduced immune response during peripartum period in Sahiwal cows was ameliorated by dietary vitamin E and zinc supplementation.

growth performance and hemato-biochemical profile in broiler chicken supplemented with shatavari (asparagus racemosus) root powder and vitamin e during summer season

The effect of shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and vitamin E supplementation on broiler performance, haematological and biochemical profile in summer season was studied during a 42 days experiment. One hundred twenty, day old broiler chicks were randomly allotted to 6 groups. Shatavari powder and vitamin E was added to the basal diet @ 0 and 0, 1 and 0, 1.5 and 0, 0 and 200, 1 and 200, 1.5% and 200 mg/kg feed in treatments T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, and T6, respectively. Feed consumption was similar in all the groups. Body weight gain was higher (P<0.05) in the treatment groups as compared to control group, however, FCR was similar in all the groups. The values of mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine were lower (P<0.05) while those of total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total serum protein, albumin and globulin levels were higher (P<0.05) in treatment groups in comparison to control group. A better response was found in terms of growth and haematological parameters in treatment with combination of 1.5% shatavari root powder and 200 mg/kg feed vitamin E.

Effect of Vitamin E and Zinc Supplementation on Milk Yield, Milk Composition, and Udder Health in Sahiwal Cows

Present study was conducted to assess the effect of vitamin E and zinc supplementation on milk yield, milk composition and udder health in Sahiwal cows. Thirty-two pregnant Sahiwal cows were selected at sixty days prepartum and divided into four groups namely control, T1, T2 and T3 of eight cows each. Cows under T1 were supplemented with Zn (60 ppm), while those under T2 were supplemented with vitamin E (1000IU); the cows under T3 were supplemented with a combination of vitamin E (1000 IU) and zinc (60 ppm) during day 60 prepartum to day 90 postpartum. After calving, milk yield of the experimental animals was recorded daily up to 120 days of lactation. Milk samples were collected fortnightly from all cows of all four groups for the estimation of milk composition (fat, protein, lactose and solid not fat), somatic cell count (SCC), and percentage of subclinical mastitis, vitamin E, and zinc. Dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, and fat corrected milk were observed higher (P<0.05) in T3 than control, T1 and T2 groups. Milk composition did not differ significantly among the four groups. Somatic cell count and percentage of subclinical mastitis was significantly (P<0.05) lower in T3 in comparison to control, T1 and T2 groups. Milk vitamin E was higher (P<0.05) in vitamin E supplemented groups (T2 and T3) than non-supplemented groups (control and T1). Milk zinc was found higher (P<0.05) in zinc supplemented groups (T1 and T3) than non-supplemented groups (control and T2). In the present study, vitamin E and zinc supplementation to Sahiwal cows increased the milk yield, vitamin E, and zinc contents in milk, and reduced the somatic cell count and percentage of subclinical mastitis.

Ameliorative effect of zinc supplementation to lead exposed goat kids on immune status

In vivo studies were conducted to observe the adverse effects of lead and protective effect of zinc on lymphocyte proliferation and total immunoglobulins concentration in eighteen crossbred (Alpine x Beetal) male goat kids (around 6 months of age). They were divided into three groups i.e. Group I (Control), Group II (Control + 50 ppm Pb) and Group III (Control + 50 ppm Pb + 50 ppm Zn). All the kids were fed as per standard dietary requirements for a period of 90 days. Blood samples were collected on 0, 30, 60 and 90 days of Pb and Zn supplementation for lymphocyte separation and total immunoglobulin. A fixed no. of cells (2x106) was grown in culture for 72 hours for studying the lymphocyte proliferation. Overall average lymphocyte proliferation response at the end of 90 days duration was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in Pb supplemented group II (1.088) as compared to groups I (1.440) and III (1.285). The adverse effect of lead on lymphocyte proliferation was recovered to some extent by Zn supplementation, but, it was still significantly less than the control, indicating that Zn addition in the diet of Pb exposed kids could not fully recover the animals from the adverse effect. Results revealed significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the mean Ig concentration (mg/ml) in group II, but it was similar in groups I and III. It may be concluded that supplementation of Zn in the diet of Pb exposed kids had a beneficial effect on lymphocyte proliferation and Ig concentration.
