Occupational sex stereotypes among college students.

Michael J. White; Theresa Kruczek; Michael T. Brown; Gwendolen B. White

Occupational stereotypes among college students are examined. College students rated the 106 occupations contained in the Strong Interest Inventory according to the degree persons in these occupations contained masculine or feminine traits or according to the proportion of men and women employed in them. Men and women made equivalent ratings of occupations. Ratings for trait and proportion did not differ. Based on comparisons with Shinars earlier research in 1975, it would appear that stereotyping has moderated even though it remained present in responses. Further comparisons show consistent differences in stereotyping based on the Holland occupational types of occupations rated. Implications for the use of interest inventories and the continuation of sex typing are presented.

Accounting in the fifth grade—is it too early?

Gwendolen B. White; William Wrege

Abstract This paper describes a project that teaches principles of accounting and Microsoft Excel to gifted and talented fifth graders. The course material was adapted from a college course usually taught at the sophomore level. Students learned about business transactions, financial statements, and business decision-making. Score differences on pretests and posttests showed learning at a statistically significant level ( P P >0.05) from college sophomores who took the same test. The importance of this project is that elementary age students can form very favorable impressions of accounting, which may be beneficial to the students and to the accounting profession. Almost all of the fifth grade students desired to learn more about accounting. This project is also an excellent opportunity to involve Beta Alpha Psi in a rewarding service experience.

Overvaluation and undervaluation of women job applicants: How general are the vagaries of sex bias?

Gwendolen B. White; Michael J. White

Using a realistic managerial task, 288 college students evaluated a man or woman who was applying for a male sex-typed job: stockbroker or football photographer. Applicants were either demonstrably skilled or unknown in ability. Contrary to expectations, skilled women were not overvalued when compared with similarly skilled men. Additionally, women with inadequate information about their ability were not undervalued compared with men. No differences attributable to applicant sex were obtained. Ability information significantly improved ratings of stockbroker applicants, but did not effect football photographer applicants. The generality of prior overvaluation findings obtained by Heilman, Martell, and Simon (1988) is reexamined.

Sustainability Reporting for Cities: Why Not?

Gwendolen B. White; Jamie Holpuch

Many U.S. cities are engaging in sustainability initiatives to make their cities more livable and to confront the problems of population shifts, waste disposal, and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainability reporting can be useful for cities that have an interest in communicating their economic, environmental, and social impacts to their stakeholders. This article describes how the City of Bloomington, Indiana published its first Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sustainability report through a collaboration among two Indiana universities, a for-profit sustainability dashboard company, and the city. This is an example of a partnership that benefited students and the community. A brief history of the city along with a description of its sustainability initiatives and the resulting GRI report are presented.
