1×N self-made polymer optical fiber based splitter for POF-650nm-LED based application

Mohd Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Hadi Guna; Mohd Hazwan Harun

This research focuses on fabrication of 1 by N multimode polymethyl methacrylate based step-index polymer optical fiber (PMMA SI-POF) to be proposed on application based on POF-LED combination as a main transmission media. This self-made bundled-fiber splitters have been fabricated by a perform technique. There several systems available on the market, which able to split or couple optical signals transmitted into some different channels, which are all afflicted with certain disadvantages. But all these solutions have one main disadvantage; they are all too expensive for most of the applications. So the goal of the research is to develop an economical splitter for multipurpose application over PMMA-POF. PMMA material here can be seen as one of the best solution in achieving objectives of the research due to it flexibility and cost efficiency deployment. Characterization of the splitter was reported. Red LED with 650 nm wavelength has been injected into the splitter with the aim to analyze power efficiency of the splitter. A coupling efficiency of 80% has been demonstrated. The device performance can be improved gradually through experience and practice. Main point here is the fabrication process is simple, easy and suitable to be used for household.

Mohd Hazwan Harun; Mohammad Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Hadi Guna; Kasmiran Jumari

This paper demonstrate novel coupler 1 × N coupler based on polymer optical fiber (POF) was fabricated by handwork fusion method using yellow flame burner and metal tube. A new additional process - twisting-effect removal - is demonstrated to enhance fusion quality. For the purpose of performance characterization, LED fiber source with 650 wavelengths was injected into input fiber while optical power in output fibers was measured by optical power meter. The final results showed that the power-splitting performance of the coupler is satisfying since the insertion loss and excess loss is extremely low (< 7 dB and 0.53 dB, respectively). For video surveillance application, the coupler has potential for high quality video transmission in tree-topology communication system.

Low-cost cascaded 1×4 Polymer Optical Fiber coupler for multiplexing wavelengths

Mohd Syuhaimi Ab. Rahman; Mohd Hazwan Harun; Hadi Guna

The Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology considered as the only solution for increasing demand for higher bandwidth in optical communication, whereby several different wavelengths can carry variety information over one Polymer Optical Fiber (POF). Wavelength Division Multiplexer is an essential component to combine several different wavelengths before all wavelengths are carried together over single POF. In most instances, the conventional multiplexers are afflicted with certain disadvantages and one major disadvantage is that they are costly for most of the POF applications. Thus, the goal of this study is to develop self-fabricated POF coupler as an economical optical multiplexer for WDM transmission over POF. The POF coupler has been fabricated by homemade fusion technique. Red LED with a 650 nm wavelength has been injected into the coupler for the purpose of characterization testing to analyze the level of power efficiency of the coupler. The characterization of POF coupler reveals that the maximum power efficiency could be reached up to 70%. The result exhibits that self-fabricated 1×4 POF coupler has great potential to be applied as optical multiplexer for WDM fiber technology due to the character of high-efficiency and low-cost.

Polymer optical fibers (POFs) are in a great demand for the transmission and processing of optical-based data communications compatible with the Internet, which is one of the fastest growing industries in automobile and domestic industry. Other industry such as aviation and maritime have also taking the advantages of POF. POFs become an alternative transmis‐ sion media replacing copper cable for future shipboard networks. A proposed POF based technology over submarine network for multimedia data transmission, measurement sys‐ tem, navigation, sensors and several applications. As shown in Figure 1, the system is able to transmit a number of signals represent a different data transmission (such as video, au‐ dio, etc) using a WDM based network (refer to Figure 1).

Mohd Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Kasmiran Jumari; Hadi Guna; Mohd Hazwan Harun

Small world networks are promising candidates for communication networks since typical data-flow patterns in communication networks show a large amount of clustering with a small number of long-distance communications that need to be completed quickly. Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) can be and are being used in various fields of application. Two of the main fields are the automotive and the home networking. So, POF here can be seen as one of the best solutions for small world communication especially in home networking application. In this paper, optical 1x3 fused-taper-twisted polymer optical fiber (POF) splitters has been fabricated by a perform technique and proposed to be applied on small world communication application. There several systems available on the market, which can be split a coupled signal to be transmitted into some different channels, which are all afflicted with certain disadvantages. But all these solutions have one main disadvantage; they are all too expensive for most of the applications mentioned above. So the goal of this study is to develop an economical splitter for small world communication over POFs. Characterization of the splitter was reported. Red LED with a 650 nm wavelength has been injected into the splitter for the purpose of characterization testing to analyze the level of power efficiency of the splitter. Final analysis shows that efficiency of splitter output able to reach up to 30%. The device performance can be improved gradually through experience and practice. Main point here is, the fabrication process is simple, easy and suitable to be used for household.

New Concept for Reducing Wire-Harness and Implementing Advanced Facilities for Non-Luxury Vehicles via Application of POF

Mohammad Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Farshad Nasimi Khamene; Hadi Guna

In the past decade automotive industries being faced the exponential increase of in-vehicle electronic devices. The hydraulic systems are replaced with sophisticated electronic systems. Market demands for exploiting new in-vehicle technologies such as multimedia systems, internet access, GPS, Mobile communication, internal private network; engine, body and power train intelligent control and monitoring systems are increasing daily. These new needs make the wire-harness as physical pathway for power and data more complex. The amount of different data types transmission in vehicle networking requires higher bandwidth and subsequently applying expensive and advanced equipment. Furthermore functions and facilities lead to raise the number of electronic control units (ECU). The high cost of manufacturing and implementing the previous equipment and systems only can be justified to luxury vehicles high prices. This paper presents a conceptual model of in-vehicle networking which would lead to the appliance of considerable portion of these advanced systems in non-luxury vehicles. In this context, polymer optical fibers (POF) exploited to achieve high speed bandwidth and cost-effective solution to transfer huge amount of data and one ECU to control and manage body/cabin electronic devices. This paper suggests three red, blue and green lights for transferring video/audio, communication data network such as internet/vehicle internal network and body/cabin command lines respectively. Moreover, this concept model claims for reducing wire-harness with integration of command lines into multiplexed POF line.

Mohammad Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Hadi Guna; Mohd Hazwan Harun; Kasmiran Jumari

A novel WDM-POF technology, a cost-effective and eco-friendly optical data transmission unit is the most updated and promising innovation that will revolutionize interior automotive infotainment system which all data can be simply sent in visible light format rather than in electrical format at high speed data transmission. Infotainment system is such all-in-one entertainment media system and the latest trend in automotive network in which many appliances such as interactive gaming console, video player, ethernet navigator, camera reverse sensor and many other appliances can be integrated and equipped in car interior in ring topology. With novel WDM-POF technology, all data such can be processed with environment-friendly LED conversion and low-cost multiplexing and filtering method besides the fact that it can extend the number of appliances in car interior. This invention enables simple POF cabling system for delivering each optical data such as video, audio, Ethernet as POF is the most updated cabling technology replacing conventional copper wire for short-haul communication.
