Objective: To evaluate whether the high expression of metalloproteinases observed in the temporomandibular joint can be considered as an indicator of degenerative disease. Methods: The PubMed, BVS, Embase, and ScienceDirect databases were systematically searched for articles written in English, regarding human studies that were published from 2003 to 2013. After applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria, four articles were selected. Results: Two studies analyzed the presence of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) through histology and immunohistochemical evaluation of articular discs; both observed a higher concentration of MMPs in the discs of ill patients. Another study, using genomic DNA from oral cells of ill and healthy patients, found a higher presence of MMP-1G/2G in affected individuals. A fourth study examined the synovial fluid of patients and control groups and concluded that MMPs were present in most patients with articular changes. Discussion: Despite the lack of methodology standardization,...

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: This study aims at comparing the perception of orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, visual artists and laypersons when evaluating the influence of sagittal position of the mandible - in lateral view - in facial attractiveness; at a job hiring; and in the perception of socioeconomic profile. METHODS: A black male, a white male, a black female and a white female with harmonic faces served as models to obtain a facial profile photograph. Each photograph was digitally manipulated to obtain seven facial profiles: an ideal, three simulating mandibular advancement and three simulating mandibular retrusion, producing 28 photographs. These photographs were evaluated through a questionnaire by orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, visual artists and laypersons. RESULTS: The anteroposterior positioning of the mandible exerted strong influence on the level of facial attractiveness, but few significant differences between the different groups of evaluators were observed (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The profiles pointed as the most attractive were also pointed as more favorable to be hired to a job position and pointed also as having the best socioeconomic condition.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and associated factors of carotid artery calcification (CAC) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. STUDY DESIGN A total of 309 panoramic radiographs of patients with CKD (180 men and 129 women; mean age 43.7 years) undergoing hemodialysis were evaluated by a single radiologist to determine the frequency of CAC. An analysis of associated factors, such as age, sex, time spent in hemodialysis, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, biochemical parameters, and other systemic diseases, was also performed. RESULTS The presence of CAC in patients with CKD, as determined on the basis of panoramic radiography, was 15.9%. The χ2 test revealed that there was a statistically significant association between certain factors, such as age, sex, and diabetes mellitus, and the presence of CAC (P < .05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that time spent in hemodialysis was significantly associated with the occurrence of CAC. CONCLUSIONS A significant presence of CAC was detected on digital panoramic radiographs in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Calcification was more frequent in older patients, women, individuals with diabetes mellitus, and patients who had undergone hemodialysis for longer periods.

Objective To evaluate the agreement between cephalometric measures obtained from two different software programs: Dolphin Imaging 11.7® and Radiocef Studio 2®. Methods 30 digital lateral teleradiographies (200 dpi, 2100 x 2092 pixels) were analyzed on each of the software programs through demarcation of 11 cephalometric points by a single calibrated examiner. Then, the generated cephalometric magnitudes were statistically correlated by means of the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Then 10 randomly selected radiographies were retraced on each of the programs in order to evaluate the intra-examiner concordance after a time interval of 08 days. Results The SNB and Pog-NB magnitudes showed strong concordance between the software, while the SNA, ANB, 1-NA, 1-NB, 1.NB, 1.1 and Go-Gn. SN magnitudes unveiled moderate concordance. Only the 1.NA magnitude showed weak concordance. Conclusion The software can be interchangeably applied in clinical practice. Indexing terms: Cephalometry. Orthodontics. Software.

Introduction The analysis of mixed dentition is essential for diagnosis in Orthodontics to estimate size of unerupted permanent teeth and evaluate if the dental volume is in accordance with the arch lenght. Currently, there are softwares that perform the analysis of dental casts in 2D and 3D. However, these programs are still very expensive. Aim The aim of this study was to develop a software (OrthoSystem) to be used by undergraduate and postgraduate orthodontics students to perform the mixed dentition analysis of Moyers. Method To evaluate the accuracy and the time consumption, 60 pairs of dental casts were evaluated according Moyers analysis both manually and through the use of the software. Questionnaires were administered to 72 undergraduate Dentistry students to test the usability of the program. Result The program had the accuracy validated, showing a perfect agreement (p = 1) and a time consuption of 4.2 minutes less when compared with the manual method to do the mixed dentition analysis. In addition, the OrthoSystem was considered excellent in usability and better than the conventional method by the students. Conclusion The OrthoSystem software is efficient and was considered excellent for undergraduate Dentistry students.
