The BPM Center of Excellence (CoE) has been widely adopted in organizations that believe in BPM’s potential as a tool to promote an organizational environment that is technically and culturally prone to innovation and change. This chapter shows the relevance of a BPM CoE in order to implement an effective BPM Governance that generates synergy, efficiency, and collaboration within all types of existent BPM initiatives inside an organization. It also discusses lessons learnt related to the implementation of a BPM CoE by presenting a real case in a Brazilian company.

Studies of the problems of implementation report that a major portion of strategies are not implemented. While strategy implementation is itself a subject worthy of study, the implementation context poses specific challenges like higher education institutions (HEIs). The HEI context is one of heightened competition. Accordingly, this study investigates what factors influence the transformation of whatever strategic intentions exist into whatever strategic actions are taken. A case study was conducted at an HEI in southern Brazil. The study presents elements relating to factors that may influence processes leading to the implementation of strategic intentions. The study sought to contribute by providing a model that explicitates possible relationships among factors that impact implementation.

This paper discusses the decision process to develop an engineering net, based on CAD/CAM/DNC technology, in an industrial firm in Rio de Janeiro. This implementation will allow an improvement of the product development process. It will also allow the planning and controlling of the operations in a manufacturing plant through direct links with production resources.

Healthcare waste management (HCWM) is at problem in many developing countries. One of the main steps to implement a proper HCWM process is knowledge of the amount and composition of material generated. There are rare studies of the contribution of kitchen waste to the total mass of non-hazardous waste generated by hospitals in the world. This paper reports a diagnosis of waste generation by the kitchen of a maternity hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Using the method established by the World Health Organization (WHO), non-hazardous wastes of all sectors were weighed for seven consecutive days in July and August, 2015. The average kitchen waste generated was 92.77 kg.day -1 and 76,73 kg.day -1 , respectively, corresponding to 43.65% and 46.44% of the total mass of general waste produced in the period, although there was no positive correlation between the generated mass of kitchen waste and the number of meals prepared and served. We concluded that kitchen waste poses a considerable challenge to HCWM, mainly involving temporary internal storage, external storage and container cleaning, as well in the physical conditions of the workers that transport the waste.
