Retrieving process analysis in a parts distribution center: a case study of manual trolley fleet substitution

This paper summarizes the results of a simulation study for a parts distribution center (PDC), which contains approximately 30000 items, modeling its retrieving process in simulation software ARENA/spl reg/ 5.0. The collection of the parts is carried out manually by five employees, being supported by manual trolleys. The current problem of PDC is to decide if that manual trolley fleet should be substituted, since the existent ones are unbalanced in comparison with the same market competitors, considering the retrieving process total time effectiveness. The Input data to the model about the fleet is the decision factor. Those data are statistically organized in two levels, according to the design of experiments 2 and the results of each test are obtained from two replications. With these results, managers will be able to evaluate possibilities, compare to the current situation and conclude how viable it is to change the fleet.

Flexible benchmarking: a new reference model

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and propose a new way to do benchmarking. It describes an explanatory case study whereby data are collected through an internet benchmarking system with multi-criteria performance. Design/methodology/approach – The research methodology was to conduct a literature review on international journals about evolution, typology and trends of benchmarking. Through a third year case study of Internet Benchmarking and Monitoring System of Productive Arrangements System the authors describe and propose a flexible benchmarking model. Findings – The paper provides empirical insights about a new model of flexible benchmarking taking into account different demands, whereby partners’ data are collected and processed according to their needs. SIMULAÇÃO DO TRANSPORTE DE MINÉRIO DE FERRO NA HIDROVIA DO ARAGUAIA-TOCANTINS

No Estado do Para, inumeras alternativas de transporte vem sendo desenvolvidas. Destaca-se o transporte multimodal de minerio de ferro pelo rio Tocantins. A carga, transportada em larga escala atraves do modal hidroviario, sofre transbordo rodoviario por um trecho de apenas quatro quilometros, na cidade de Tucurui, em funcao do barramento do rio, decorrente da hidreletrica. Este trabalho propoe-se a aplicacao de modelagem e simulacao para o diagnostico e analise deste sistema de transporte multimodal. Inicialmente, e construido um arcabouco teorico, referente ao contexto do sistema de transporte, a modelagem e a simulacao. Em seguida, sao estruturados os modelos conceitual e computacional do sistema. Com o modelo computacional estruturado, sao realizadas analises de sensibilidades, atraves de alteracoes nos valores de variaveis de entrada pre-determinadas. Por fim, sao apresentadas sugestoes e recomendacoes para eventuais aprofundamentos desta pesquisa.

Industrial Performance Assessment Through the Application of a Benchmarking and Monitoring System

The purpose of this paper is to describe a multiple criteria benchmarking and monitoring system for assessing the performance of industrial sectors. The referred system was designed for comparing and monitoring companies’ performance against market requirements. As an illustration, data collected during a three-year period for a specific local productive arrangement of Ceara, Brazil are showcased. The findings indicate the opportunities and needs for collective strategic actions by the companies and sectors in order to promote local development.
