Madeiras tropicais: análise econômica das principais espécies florestais exportadas

Humberto Angelo; Alexandre Anders Brasil; Joaquim dos Santos

This work analyses Brazilian tropical wood exports for principal forest species, over the period of 1980-98. Tendency models were built to estimate the growth rate and to explain the export performance for each species. The results pointed out that the principal tropical species exported were, in decreasing order, mahogany, jatoba, virola, cedar, angelim, ipe, andiroba, sucupira, tatajuba, cedrorana, assacu, cerejeira, pau-marfim, freijo and jacaranda. Only six species represented 40% of volume and total exported revenue. The species said less known increased their exports from 1991. The exported volume of mahogany, virola, andiroba, sucupira and freijo decreased, on the other hand jatoba, cedar, ipe and cerejeira have increased their share in the international market. About price, all studied species showed a positive tendency along studied period and value relatively low in comparison to the mahogany price..

This work analyzed the level of substitution of six Amazonian species on the international sawnwood market, by employing the substitution elasticity model. Data supplied by the Brazilian Department of Foreign Trade (SECEX) was collected monthly from January/1996 to September/2007. The species analyzed were: mogno (Swietenia macrophylla), cedro (Cedrela spp.), virola (Virola surinamensis), louro (Nectandra spp. e Ocotea spp.), angico (Anadenanthera spp.) e ipe (Tabebuia spp.). The elasticities indicated that all of the species as substitutes for mogno. For the species which possess different physical characteristics, market factors probably related to the supply guarantee of mogno have influenced these results. In general, the results suggested a similarity among the species considered noble (mogno, ipe and cedro) on the international market indicating them as good substitutes among themselves.

The Amazon rainforest is the world’s largest biome, containing almost 50% of the planet’s known biodiversity and is the biggest source of fresh water, which is approximately one-fifth of the global reserves. However, the sustainable use of this ecosystem is threatened by several factors, and deforestation is the main problem. This study addresses the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon forest, in particular evaluate the determinants of the deforestation process, using for this purpose, time-series of several socioeconomic factors from 1990 to 2015. The methodology applied included statistical analyzes based on the application of multivariate discriminant analysis with the stepwise criteria. The results showed that in order of importance cattle, roads network, population, logging and crop areas were the determinant variables of the deforestation in the amazon. Key words: Cattle, population, deforestation, Brazilian Amazon.

This work analyses Brazilian tropical wood exports, taking into consideration their performance and competitiveness from 2004 to 2011. The present paper aims to: a) determine the competitiveness of exports of goods: sawn wood and tropical plywood; and b) compare the performance of both products. The Constant Market Share model and the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RVAI) estimated competitiveness and performance. The results show that sawn wood has proven to be the only product to provide competitive gains over the analyzed period.

Avaliação Ambiental do Parque Olhos D’Água: Aplicação do Método da Disposição a Pagar

Alexandre Nascimento de Almeida; Raphael de Oliveira Versiani; Philipe Ricardo Casemiro Soares; Humberto Angelo

The aim of the study was to apply the method of Willingness to Pay (WTP) to users of the Olhos D`agua park in order to contribute to the valuation of its environmental attributes aiming at preservation and improvement of the Conservation Unit. The Olhos D’Agua park is located in a prime area of Brasilia administratively created by the Federal District. This study was based on economic and psychographic segmentation variables and on the ecological knowledge of users. To this end, 100 questionnaires were applied with questions divided into two parts: 1) indication of willingness to pay by users of the park, and; 2) segmentation, according to specific criteria and characterization of users. The results indicated not only that people with altruistic profile and more concerned with the environment showed a greater willingness to pay for conservation of the Olhos D´agua park, but also that this segment of users could contribute to the definition of green user profile and, thus, serve as a basis for the elaboration of an environmental marketing program geared to increase the financial resources for preservation and improvement of the park.

Determinantes para um Sistema de Informação Florestal

Humberto Angelo; Alexandre Nascimento de Almeida; Paulo José Prudente de Fontes; Álvaro Nogueira de Souza

Determinants for a forest information system. This paper tests the relative importance of a group of pre-selected themes for the construction of a Forestry Information System for Brazil – BR-SIFLOR. The methodology that was used lies on a set of 12 thematic modules and 58 sub-themes in order to be evaluated by a group of people (holistic judging method). The information relates to: 1) Forest cover; 2) Production Forests; 3) Ownership of Forest Lands; 4) Forest-based Industry; 5) Forest Products Market; 6) Technology Products; 7) Forest Biological Diversity; 8) Climate Change and Forest; 9) Forest Economics and Statistics; 10) Forest Law; 11) Forest Certification; 12) Forestry Teaching and Research. We conclude that the key information to be included in the SIFLOR focus on themes of Forest Economy and Production.
