BACKGROUND The utilisation of molecular markers has increased in molecular research recently. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers allow the analysis of genomes without preliminary sequence information, since random primers are used. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate ISSR markers for assessing the genetic diversity of indigenous Anatolian Water Buffaloes reared in Afyon, Konya and Sivas provinces of Turkey, with a view to conservation of the gene resources. RESULTS The 11 ISSR primers chosen for the analysis revealed a total of 110 bands, of which 76 (69.09%) were polymorphic. Also, genetic similarity, polymorphic information content (PIC), resolving power (R(p)) and mean resolving power (R(p)), heterozygosity (H) and Shannon index (I) were calculated as 0.9479-0.9562, 0.35 ± 0.20, 2.73, 0.27, 0.18 ± 0.07 and 0.28 ± 0.11, respectively. CONCLUSION The ISSR markers were found to be promising for assessing the genetic diversity in buffalo populations. Potential genetic parameters such as PIC, R(p), R(p), H and I were effectively used in this study.

Fatty Acid Composition and Conjugated Linoleic Acid Content in Different Carcass parts of Dağlıç Lambs

Ali Karabacak; İbrahim Aytekin; Saim Boztepe

This study was conducted to compare fatty acid composition and content of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in different regions of sheep carcasses. Lambs of the Dağlıç breed were used for this purpose. Subsequent to a 68-day period of intensive fattening, fatty acids were examined in samples taken from the legs, shoulders, breasts, and ribs of lamb carcasses. According to the analysis, in leg, shoulder, breast, and rib, respectively, total saturated fatty acids (SFA) were found to be 40.38, 42.69, 42.56, and 40.27%, unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were found to be 40.38, 44.17, 46.17, and 49.50%, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were found to be 4.79, 4.29, 3.80, and 3.72%, and CLAs were found to be 1.49, 1.69, 1.53, and 1.59%.

Fattening performance and carcass characteristics of Akkaraman lambs in different housing systems

Ali Karabacak; İbrahim Aytekin; Saim Boztepe

This study was carried out to determine the fattening performance, body measurements, and slaughter and carcass characteristics of Akkaraman lambs fattened under indoor and outdoor housing systems. Fourteen Akkaraman lambs were used for the current study. Lambs were less than 3 months of age having about 20 kg live weight, and fed concentrated feed ad libitum together with 150 g of dehydrated alfalfa per day for 8 weeks. The daily live weight gain of Akkaraman sheep in the indoor housing system was 313 g while this value was 277 g a day in the outdoor housing system (P0.05), respectively. The differences between the housing systems in terms of total chest depth increase, chest depth and total body length increase were statistically significant (Pics were statistically significant. Also, the pH, hardness and color values as L*, a*, b*, H* and C* at 24 h after slaughter were determined.

Fattening performance and carcass traits of Anatolian Merino lambs in indoor and outdoor sheepfolds.

Ali Karabacak; İbrahim Aytekin; Saim Boztepe

The objective of this study was to determine the fattening performance and carcass traits of Anatolian Merino lambs under different housing systems. Average daily live weight gains (DLW Gain, g), total feed intakes (Total FI, kg) for each stall and the feed conversion ratios (FCR) of Anatolian Merino lambs in indoor and outdoor sheepfolds were found to be 262 and 270 g, 125.2 and 128.8 kg, 4.63 and 4.76 (P>0.05), respectively. The differences between the groups in warm carcass weight (33.07 and 34.90 kg, respectively), cold carcass weight (15.65 and 17.65 kg, respectively), leg weight (2.64 and 2.98 kg, respectively) (P 0.05) of the eye muscle area and subcutaneous fat were also determined.

Abstract Zülkadir, U., Aytekin, I. and Keskin, 1. 2008. Relationship between persistency values defined with various methods and some lactation traits of Brown Swiss cattle in Turkey. J. App. Arum. Res., 34: 137–141. The study was conducted to compute the persistency values of the animals in different lactation periods with various methods drawing upon 3695 test day milk yield of 182 lactations of Brown Swiss cattle in Konya Konuklar Agricultural Enterprise. The computed persistency values of the animals in the first lactation were different (P<0.01) from the other lactations. Lactation number (P<0.05) and calving seasons (P<0.01) effected persistency values. The phenotypic correlation of the methods within the group and with lactation milk yield, lactation period, daily average milk yield and daily maximum milk yield were highly significant (P<0.01). The Sblkner and Fuchss model based on standard deviation of 305 d lactation period showed the highest phenotypic correlation for lactation milk yield (LMY), daily average milk yield (DAMY), daily maximum milk yield (DMMY), and the best fit to the data collected from Brown Swiss cattle and allowed a suitable description of the shape of the lactation curve.
