The structural equation modelling (SEM) results indicate that firm size, managerial beliefs, and pressure intensity explain the variance in web technology investment. Managerial belief is found to have the function of mediator in the relationship between pressure intensity and web technology investment.

Abstract The study is intended to highlightthe contribution of IT sophistication in the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well as to explore government or tax authority strategies in strengthening IT sophistication for GST implementation, primarily to the business community. This study used a combination of information obtained from an interview with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) and information available from diverse sources.GST or value added tax (VAT) has been implemented by 162 countries in the world including latest list, Malaysia. Generally, while GST concept seems similar which is indirect tax revenue to the country, the implementation is significantly different between countries. Therefore, recognising the importance of IT or computer-based system is capable to smooth the GST implementation, which is something needs to be highlighted by Malaysia for future reference to prospective GST/VAT countries.A lot of effort is made by the Malaysian government or the RMCD in order to strengthen IT sophistication of businesses (registered person). These include rules and regulations, budget provision and financial assistance, computerized system development, and vendor participation. Thus, this paper is hoped contributes to the literature by providing information on the Malaysian government or the RMCD strategies in strengthening the IT sophistication of businesses, finally smoothing GST implementation, which is believed to be reported infrequently in international literature.

Technology for Islamic microfinance’s disbursement and repayment system

Nabilah Rozzani; Intan Salwani Mohamed; Sharifah Norzehan Syed Yusuf

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the implementation of a mobile network system for an Islamic microfinance institution, made in collaboration with a commercial bank in Malaysia. It also intends to highlight any emerging issues pertaining to the implementation of technology into the disbursement and repayment system of an Islamic microfinance institution from their clients’ perspectives. As Islamic microfinance industry is still growing in Malaysia, findings gathered throughout the course of study are also intended to boost further knowledge relating to this area. Design/methodology/approach By using a case study method, interview sessions were conducted separately with clients of the Islamic microfinance institution. The purpose of interview sessions is to identify the benefits and problem that surrounds the usage of mobile banking into the repayment system for Islamic microfinance products. Data triangulation with various public documents was conducted to enhance the credibility and reliability of data, also to support the claims that were made by the respondents. Findings It was found that clients are quite satisfied with the disbursement process through a mobile solution. However, the same cannot be said with the repayment process. The difficulties in using the mobile solution pose a major threat to its success. As most clients are not born to be technological savvy, the lack of easiness in methods for the usage of a mobile solution for their transactions pushes them away from further exploring the benefits that can be brought in by the function. Other risks which were highlighted include concerns towards breach of trust and risks of robbery. Clients of the case study, on the other hand, are concerned that the transfer of cash between their meeting venues to the bank would expose them to the public who might try to take advantage from the situation. Research limitations/implications As the current study had only focusses on mobile banking aspect of the repayment system for one Islamic microfinance institution, a multiple case study could be adapted to investigate various banking channels being implemented by different Islamic microfinance institutions in Malaysia and their current success. Practical implications By highlighting several issues through this study, it is hoped that this Islamic microfinance institution would consider applying other means of payment that are available in the market that is not only cost-efficient, but also beneficial for clients of the institution. Originality/value This study highlights the setbacks in the usage of technology by clients of Islamic microfinance institution in Malaysia. Although many approved to the diffusion of innovation in Malaysian banking sector, the same has yet to be achieved in the Islamic microfinance industry, which clients are mostly technology illiterate.

Security, Risk and Trust Issues among Muslim Users for Online Businesses☆

Noor Hidayah Ab Aziz; Intan Salwani Mohamed; Nor Balkish Zakaria

Abstract The study attempts to investigate the robust factors that influence Muslim users’ behavioural intention to use e-commerce transactions by empirically examining the causal link between perceived security and privacy, perceived risks and perceived trust with behavioral intention to use e-commerce. Sample is drawn using stratified random sampling taken from all over Malaysia. Using Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this research tries to look at different perspective, whereby the respondents are among Muslims who are obliged to follow the Shariah principles. The four major forbidden elements in buying & selling which are Riba’, Gharar, Maysir and Zulm are believed to be their fundamental judgment in dealing with e-commerce transactions. Results of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) demonstrate that perceived security and privacy as well as perceived risks have a significant relationship with behavioral intention, while perceived trust shows contrary result. The research findings would be useful for companies that engage in e-commerce to design business strategies to cater Muslim users who form one of the largest populations in e-commerce.

Development of Community Currency for Islamic Microfinance

Nabilah Rozzani; Rashidah Abdul Rahman; Intan Salwani Mohamed; Sharifah Norzehan Syed Yusuf

Abstract The potential of Islamic microfinance is significant in contributing towards the alleviation of poverty and also promoting development of a nation. This is because Islamic microfinance has the ability to nurture its clients from being a recipient of zakat (obligatory contribution) to eventually becoming a zakat payer in the future. From the capital assistance provided to clients, Islamic microfinance institutions monitor its clients’ growth from start-up all the way to success. The emergence of technology had made life much simpler in the past few years. Also, with the interaction between members of the community, benefits of establishing this community via Islamic microfinance institutions would be expanded, rather than acting as capital provider alone. This can be made possible with the introduction of community currency, which is a medium to exchange goods and services within a community, where this community is defined to be a group with a common bond, such as members of a locality or an association, and it is not restricted geographically. The current study looks into the usage of community currency worldwide. The benefits of community currency usage are hence investigated. Finally with the findings gathered and discussions made throughout the research journey, the current study proposes a community currency framework which could serve as an alternative economy in a Malaysian context. The study examines secondary data, such as reports, documentaries and booklets to understand how community currency is being a success in other parts of the world. The study had also identified one type of community currency that can suit the environment of Islamic microfinance institutions, which is the Local Exchange Trading System (LETS) mechanism.

Norzaidi Mohd Daud; Intan Salwani Mohamed; Saad A. Alghanim; Rashid M. Alhamali

ABSTRACT This article investigates the impact of intranet resistance (i.e. co-workers affluence, negative prior experience, efficacy experience, poor systems design and loss of power) on manager’s performance, which indirectly influences intranet withdrawal in Malaysia maritime industry. The structural equation modelling (SEM) results indicate that all intranet resistance factors negatively influence managers’ performance and indirectly influence intranet withdrawal. This is probably the first work that investigate the impact of intranet resistance and withdrawal in Malaysia. The results provide insight on how the Malaysian maritime industry could improve their intranet adoption.
