FELISMINA E LIBERTINA VÃO À ESCOLA: NOTAS SOBRE A ESCOLARIZAÇÃO NAS FREGUESIAS DE SANTA RITA E SANTANA (RIO DE JANEIRO, 1888 - 1906)

The article analyzes the possibilities, tensions and limits of schooling in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the period during the slavery abolition and post-abolition (1888-1906). The research focuses on regions of high population density, with increasing enrollment rates in public schools. Thinking the context of post-abolition within the history of education aims to understand how national and local projects targeted at popular instruction interacted with expectations and actions of freedmen and free people in a dialogue with historiographical studies concerning the struggles of this population for educational access.

Hygiene, childhood typologys and institutionalization of poor children in Brazil (1875-1899)

This study investigated the emergence of childhood as a social problem and how the subject was treated by hygienists, whom were graduates from the Medical School of Rio de Janeiro. This institution allowed broad dialogue with countries regarded as paradigms of civilization with regard to dissertations on the subject. At the same time, we attempted to analyze the imprints left by these hygienists’ discourses on two institutions created between 1875 and 1899 in Rio de Janeiro, focused on children who were classified as orphans, abandoned, and destitute in the specialized literature and records of detention facilities. Working with knowledge-producing discourses focused on the management of these children in order to disseminate the mentioned discourses, our sources were constituted of theses, books and specialized journals, as well as documents from the boarding schools, which recorded their reform projects and described their daily and operational practices, such as regulations and reports.

A cidade do Rio de Janeiro, na decada 1920, foi marcada pela implementacao de certas acoes de governo que almejaram empreender um entrelacamento das dimensoes preventivas, educacionais e correcionais com as iniciativas de reforma urbana. O artigo, incidindo o foco sobre a legislacao educacional, regulamentacao da assistencia social, relatorios de chefes de policia, oficios remetidos pela Diretoria Geral de Instrucao, periodicos e registros fotograficos, problematiza algumas das justificativas acionadas no periodo que sublinhavam as potenciais contribuicoes que a reconfiguracao dos comportamentos, habitos e condutas da populacao prestaria para a tentativa de disciplinamento e harmonizacao do tracado arquitetonico e seus usos sociais.
