Knowledge Sharing: Effects of Cooperative Type and Reciprocity Level

Jaekyung Kim; Sang M. Lee; David L. Olson

Knowledge sharing is an important research area in knowledge management. This study broadens the perspective on knowledge sharing by investigating an individual’s behavior type as a cooperator, reciprocator, and free rider toward knowledge contribution. In this study, we view shared knowledge in a community of practice as a public good and adopt a theory of reciprocity to explain how different cooperative types affect knowledge contribution. In the perspective of shared knowledge as a public good, people may react in three ways: they share knowledge without need for reciprocity (cooperators), they feel obligated to share their knowledge (reciprocators), or they take knowledge for granted (free riders). Analytic and simulation results reveal that the fraction of cooperators is positively related to total knowledge contribution and to the reciprocity level, while the reciprocity level positively affects knowledge contribution.

Comparison of first order predicate logic, fuzzy logic and non-monotonic logic as knowledge representation methodology

Kyung Hoon Yang; David L. Olson; Jaekyung Kim

Abstract The aim of this paper is to compare first order predicate logic, fuzzy logic and non-monotonic logic as knowledge representation methods. First, we define five properties of knowledge; conceptualization, transfer, modification, integration and decomposition. We also evaluate first order predicate logic, fuzzy logic and non-monotonic logic for the above properties, in the view of accuracy, complexity, and completeness. We then prove that the complexities of the three methods are NP-complete. We use this information to design a heuristic algorithm tested on probabilistic input to evaluate accuracy and completeness. With the results, we compare weaknesses and strengths of each method.

Evolution of Web-Based Shopping Systems: Characteristics and Strategies

Changsu Kim; Robert D. Galliers; Kyung Hoon Yang; Jaekyung Kim

This article offers a theoretical analysis of evolutionary processes in WBSS strategies. For that purpose, we propose a research model that shows strategy patterns. Based upon the model, we identified several types of strategies. In our research model, WBSS are classified into four types: (1) general-direct-sales (GDS); (2) general-intermediary-sales (GIS); (3) specialized-direct-sales (SDS); and (4) specialized-intermediary- sales (SIS). On the basis of these four categories of WBSS, we analyze the characteristics of WBSS and suggest five evolution strategies for WBSS, which have implications for both theory and practice. Amazon.com’s strategic movements, such as product line expansion through alliance and acquisition, provide an exemplary case of the evolution of WBSS strategy. We expect that this research will serve as a guide for Internet businesses and as a catalyst for new research agendas relevant to Web-based shopping and electronic commerce.

Current usage of organisational blogs in the public sector

Jaekyung Kim; Sang Heui Lee; Min Suk Shin

The use of organisational blogs is widely witnessed in the private sector for marketing and promotional purposes. Adoption of organisational blogs in the public sector for such purposes has begun to appear only recently. In South Korea, the most networked country in the world, almost one-fourth of the population is involved in a blogging service called Cyworld. Many South Korean government agencies have initiated their blogging services within Cyworld to maximise their service capability, as blogging is a very efficient and effective bidirectional communication method. In this study, we investigated the blogs of three national-level Korean government agencies by adopting a qualitative analysis method to investigate the contents of each blog. Government blogs were found to be used more for announcements or reports for public relations, while limiting the visitors participation. The findings of this study can provide helpful guidelines for developing blogging strategies by government agencies in other countries.
