Association of nephrotic syndrome with intestinal lymphangiectasia.

J S de Sousa; O. Guerreiro; Alcino Cunha; Jair Andrade Araujo

The occurrence of exudative enteropathy in children with the nephrotic syndrome was first reported by Nussle et al. in 1961, but no intestinal pathology has previously been described in nephrotic children, whether with or without protein-losing enteropathy. The finding in small bowel biopsy specimens of intestinal lymphangiectasia, in 4 of 7 cases of nephrotic syndrome, suggests that this association might not be uncommon.

Pobreza e o Sistema de Seguridade Social Rural no Brasil

Emerson Marinho; Jair Andrade Araujo

This work aims at measuring the impact of the monetary benefits from social security retirement on poverty using panel data for the rural regions of the Brazilian states in the 1995-2005 period. The analysis is performed by controlling for other poverty determinants, such as the per capita agricultural product, income distribution, measured by the GINI index, the average of school years and the number of unemployed people over 10 years of age. The method of analysis relies on a dynamic econometric model which is estimated by the Generalized Method of Moments system, developed by Arellano e Bond (1991) and Blundell e Bond (1998). The results suggest that the retirement benefits have no direct impact on rural poverty in Brazil, whereas the average of school years and the per capita agricultural product are relevant factors for reducing rural poverty. On the other hand, the number of unemployed people has a positive effect on the increase of poverty, while the effect of income concentration is statistically insignificant.

Jair Andrade Araujo; Janaina Cabral

This work aims to verify the correlation between income inequality and economic growth in Brazilian states using the Kuznets inverted U hypothesis for the time period from 1995 to 2012. The assumption of the inverted U hypothesis – Kuznets (1955) – signals that in the short term, there is a positive correlation between income inequality and per capita income levels. In the long term, however, the inverted U relationship emerges, as the relationship is reversed. These types of income inequality indicators, as well as the Gini and Theil indices and dynamic panel data econometrics, were included in this work to empirically examine the relationship between income inequality and economic growth. This work confirms the Kuznets hypothesis in Brazilian states, among other findings.

Produtividade e eficiência no setor agropecuário do nordeste brasileiro

Jair Andrade Araujo; Ansu Mancal

This paper aims to present new perspectives for the understanding on multidimensional poverty in northern Brazil in the years 2006-2013, in order to assist the government in developing policies focused on fighting poverty and advancing the development process. The study used a methodology built by Bourguignon and Chakravarty (2003), which presents an alternative way of measuring the multidimensionality of poverty. The data was collected from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) and the results of six dimensions analyzed revealed a reduction in the proportion of multidimensional poor of the northern population, from 30.71% in 2006 to 25.79% in 2013. As for isolated analysis of metropolitan regions in urban and rural areas, it was found that poverty was more intense in rural areas. This paper aims to present new perspectives for the understanding on multidimensional poverty in northern Brazil in the years 2006-13, in order to assist the government in developing policies focused on fighting poverty and advancing the development process.
