Christiane Maria Leite Pereira; Jairo Simião Dornelas

This study identifies both enabler and inhibitor factors to the strategic alignment of information technology with existing entrepreneurial strategy in a takeover environment, i.e., the merger of two companies within a retail environment. The characteristics of the enabler and inhibitor factors for alignment were identified by means of an analysis of managerial team perceptions. The results suggest the presence of factors that are associated with those considered classic found in the literature review. The occurrence of these factors was recorded both prior to and during the initial merger process and they have been denominated, therefore, as recurrent elements. New characteristics, however, were also discovered in the takeover scenario that only appeared after the merger as formulated. Both IT managers and division heads from the post-merger business structure were interviewed. The link of each respondent to his original company was recorded so as to produce an effective set of factors that could be identified by both specific division and company. The uniqueness of the case study has to do with the fact that, although the organizational structure of the acquiring company was much larger than that of the acquired one, the profile of the IT management team of the latter was much more structured than that of the former. This provided a very interesting research scenario.

Communities of practice are groups where informal relationships, participation, networking and self-management activities stand out. A class of these communities differs from the others through the strong use of information technology resources: these are virtual communities of practice. Considering the possibility of the research groups in a Federal University being taken as virtual communities of practice, the objective of this research was to identify and classify the research groups as virtual communities of practice and highlighting the mechanisms of interaction, organization and control, which exist in their repertoire of shared resources, as well as to assess their effects on the groups’ activities. The study employed a mixed method, using survey strategy and case study. It is expected that the outcomes stimulate a discussion on the importance of information technology and mechanisms analyzed in the exchange of knowledge and in the identity consolidation of scientific research groups with virtual performance.

SITES DE REDES SOCIAIS CORPORATIVAS: ENTRE O PESSOAL E O PROFISSIONAL

Jorge S. Correia-Neto; Jairo Simião Dornelas; Guilherme Vilar

The new virtual social networking platforms (social network sites - SNS) provide new social practices inside (corporate) and outside (open) work. Since 2007 more than 1/3 of the largest U.S. organizations were already implementing actions in Web 2.0, including social networking business. This paper presents a qualitative exploratory study with two instrumental case studies, aiming to identify convergences and divergences between open and corporate social networks. At IBM, in addition to reviewing a published case, interviews were conducted with employees who designed the company’s SNS. At CESAR, an innovation institute, beyond documentary and observational research made, semi structured interviews were conducted with five people involved in the development and institutionalization of the SNS tool. The interviews were processed with content analysis. It was clear that these companies are beginning to realize that the corporate SNS are a bridge to the reality of open SNS. It was noticed that executives are also users of the SNS, which decreases the number of organizational levels and breaks barriers. As a tool for the creation and sharing of personal and professional information, a corporate SNS enables the storage and retrieval of information quickly and context-sensitively, but always taking into account the profile set by the user, such as in open networks. These convergences show that people want to be closer to their friends, and the SNS are a way to strengthen ties without breaking the limits that users want to establish with respect to the information that is being shared. Even if people come to use these SNS as a form of career climbing or a way to get support to approve their projects, a corporate SNS tends to be a tool as common as open ones.

Information management has become a growing concern in organizations. Recently, several studies have been conducted with this focus in the health care area. However, few authors deal with the issue considering the reality of public hospitals - specially teaching ones. In fact, a huge amount of data has been produced without a policy for suitable information management. That often causes wrong decisions to be made due to the lack of good information in due time. This paper discusses the issue and a proposes guidelines for information management in hospitals, regardless of them being university owned or not. To accomplish that, the authors used both a qualitative and a quantitative approaches. Members of the top management team of a well regarded teaching hospital of Pernambuco state were interviewed to identify the information needed to properly managing the hospital. Other managers were also questioned in an effort to understand the current information management configuration of the organization. Shortcomings were identified concerning in strategic issues, such as communication, peoples responsibilities and the definition of political and informational processes. Considering the literature on organizational management and information management and after a case study, a plan was prepared for the hospitals information management. The authors hope to stimulate other researchers to carry out studies that help understand and deploy efficient information management systems for Brazilian hospitals.

The process of change that is happening in the contemporary world reaches inevitably the public sector. The search for more effective management to provide quality and efficient services to citizens has been the target to be reached by moderns governments. Within this perspective the study of information systems on public organizations is strategic. In this sense, this paper aims to investigate transparency in the electronic system of purchases of the Federal Government of Brazil, the ComprasNet, with the perspective of usability. In other words, this study evaluated whether the non-functional requirement of usability has been contemplated in the ComprasNet system interfaces to meet the transparency criteria. This article is designed from a qualitative exploratory approach about the use of ComprasNet. To achieve the goal, it was performed semi-structured interviews and a field research using the observation method with system users. As a result of this research, we found that the deficiency in the ComprasNet use is caused, in most cases, by the lack of usability rules in their interfaces. In addition, the present study suggests changes in interfaces that will improve the usability of the system and in its transparency.
