The intensive care units (ICUs) can be considered as one of the most aggressive and overloaded sectors in hospitals. This research had the objective of understanding the aspects of work organization which may be associated to the psychic illness in ICUs (intensive care units) health employees and their defensive strategies. The mixed method was used. From a quantitative study with nursing professionals who work in this sector in two private hospitals in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre - RS, eight subjects with mental sickness (depression or burnout) were interviewed. In the results, certain aspects can be highlighted: few acknowledgement and support at work, work overload, working in the night shift (lack of sleep), relationship difficulties with the management, ethical issues between values and professional aspects, institutional rigidities, and difficulty in dealing with death. In the strategies used, denial and banalization of suffering, rationalization and escape can be stressed. We point out the necessity of qualified assistance and institutional support for this professional, who is in deep psychic suffering.

The teaching jobs are one of the most affected groups by burnout syndrome. With the intention of identifying factors of workstress and sociodemographic variables predictive of this disease, 202 teachers from private schools in Rio Grande do Sul – Brasil were investigated. To gather the data we have used the Questionnaire for Assessing burnout syndrome, a Socio Demographic and Labour Questionnaire and a Scale about Stressors at Work, both developed by the authors from the literature review. Descriptive and multiple linear regression analysis of the data were performed. The results indicated an explanatory model for each dimension of the burnout syndrome. Most predictors are related to the organization of work highlighting the difficulties in relation to students. The findings of this study can promote mental disease prevention programs in the teaching jobs.

Firefighters perform all kinds of rescues. Their job places them in potentially traumatic situations which may cause work-related mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate the working conditions and mental health of firefighters in Southern Brazil. The research subjects included 25 men and 2 women. The authors analyzed the anxiety, depression, alcohol use, post-traumatic stress disorder, and work environment of the firefighters, by means of scales, a questionnaire and an interview. Descriptive analysis and correlation measures were used, based on the variables of interest and content analysis. The results indicated that these professionals need higher salaries, better equipment and more training. Personal valorization and conversations with superiors were cited as positive aspects. Regarding the main aim of the study, the authors found correlations between alcohol abuse and length of service, alcohol abuse and age, and depression and age. These data suggested that there is emotional wear related to the profession, and the need of psychological support.

In Brazil, scientific studies on Emotional Intelligence (EI) are being realized only during the last two decades. This article is a bibliographic survey of brazilian scientific journals cited at INDEX PSI, LILACS, PEPSIC and SCIELO. A total of 37 national publications where found: 12 theoretical articles and 25 empirical, 6 of which were qualitative studies. Seven of the 19 quantitative studies were dedicated to the validation of EI instruments, with no correlation to other constructs. The results of this survey suggest the need of complementary studies in Brazil, especially studies that assess the relation with other relevant constructs in social, educational and clinical contexts.

Psychodynamics of work has assumed an important role in Brazilian’s studies concerning health/mental illness of workers. Therefore, this study has the objective of doing a systematic review of articles, theses and national dissertations which used the theory and/or the psychodynamics of work in the last few years (2007 to 2013). To collect materials the descriptor work psychodynamics was used in the Virtual Library in Health Psychology (BVS-Psi), in the database of Tests and Dissertations of Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Digital Brazilian Library 1 Endereço para correspondência: Rua Conselheiro D’Avila, 354, Apto. 202, Bairro Jardim Floresta, Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil 91040-450. Fone: (51) 9271-1901. E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] e [email protected] Giongo, C. R., Monteiro, J. K., Sobrosa, G. M. R. 804 of Theses and Dissertations. The result showed that the majority of studies are based in qualitative methods, investigating experiences of pleasure and pain of workers, and the most studied professional category is the workers from the health area. The analysis of the main results revealed that the Brazilian researches which employ the Work Psychodynamics have a strong descriptive characteristic, pointing to the necessity of more studies with focus on intervention and discussion of actions promoting worker’s health.
