生きたウナギに高張生理食塩水(HS)を投与し, 即殺後の死後変化におよぼす影響を調べた。HS投与後に即殺する適切な時間は, 血糖の存在とインシュリン値が最大に達した時から2a3時間後と判断された。即殺後, 筋肉ではグリコーゲン含量の減少に伴い, ATP含量の減少抑制が20時間まで認められた。これより, 死後硬直の遅延効果が示唆された。しかし, ATP分解速度の違いが生じ, 対照区との間に最大硬直到達時間の有意な差は認められなかった。よって, HS投与が死後初期にATP再生を促し, 死後硬直の遅延に影響すると考えられた。
