Felipe Perucci de Oliveira; Maria Cristina Mazzaia; João Fernando Marcolan

Objective: To verify if nurses from the emergency hospital services had depressive symptoms, identifying intervening factors and analyzing perception about the psychic suffering and its influence on care provided. Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted with nurses of emergency hospital services. The research instrument was a semi-structured questionnaire with sociodemographic variables and psychometric scales for the assessment of depression. For statistics, the Fisher exact test was used. Results: A total of 23 nurses participated, of which 91.3% showed symptoms of depression. Factors for illness were related to work conditions such as overload, devaluation, lack of human and material resources. The nurses neither acknowledged themselves as sick, nor being influenced on care provided. The results were converging for the scales of observation. All nurses were advised and sent to specialized care. Conclusion: The majority of nurses working in emergency services reported depression linked to working conditions. Most of them did not realize their own psychic suffering.

Objective: to understand how nursing workers perceive the sexuality of patients with mental disorders. Methodology: this was a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory research with a methodological approach to social representations. Results: a total of 18 nursing workers from a Center for Integral Mental Health Care in Sao Paulo participated in the study. The data was collected through interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire between March and June of 2009. Most participants perceived sexuality as a form of disease, which was the target of surveillance, control, and punishment. The lack of preparedness in nursing professionals to deal with the sexuality of patients with mental disorders was noticed. Conclusion: myths, taboos, prejudices, and lack of knowledge was observed in nursing workers facing the sexuality of patients with mental disorders. The need to address sexuality as a natural phenomenon, inherent to human beings is reaffirmed.

Solange Diccini; Suellen Naomi Yoshinaga; João Fernando Marcolan

This quantitative-based, prospective-oriented study aims to evaluate the repercussion of hair removal in post-craniotomys patient self-esteem. Data show that the majority of patients mentioned not having an altered self-esteem due to hair removal; self-esteem was kept the same among patients that were instructed about the hair removal process. The major part of patients made use of accessories as a strategy to hide shaved areas and believed that hair removal damaged neither their quality of life nor their social relationships. We conclude that the feelings directly related to the decrease of self-esteem are loss of physical attraction, insecurity and shame. The employment of accessories is made necessary towards improving self-esteem, and healthcare professionals must work with the psychosocial aspects of pre and post-surgery patients.

The multiprofessional work in the Psychosocial Care Centers of São Paulo State

Giovana Telles Jafelice; João Fernando Marcolan

OBJECTIVE Analyze how professionals understood the multi, inter and transprofessionality and how these practices happened in the CAPS (Psychossocial Care Centers) of São Paulo/SP. METHOD Qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study, and use of Content Analysis. We interviewed 27 professionals from nine CAPS. RESULTS Organized in two categories: definition of multiprofessional, interprofessional and transprofessional work in Mental Health; and specific aspects of professions and Conceptions about multi, inter and transprofessional teamwork in daily life. There were difficulties in conceptualizing modalities of disciplinary integration, little problematization in the reality of workers, and questions of specific practices of each area. The devices have been problematized, in which the distancing of Public Policies happen. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS There is coexistence of the biomedical, of insane asylum and Psychosocial Care paradigms in the discourses and actions of the teams, to compromise the effectiveness of the Psychiatric Reform. The practice was close to the ideas of integration and of auxiliary interdisciplinarity and not of the effective construction of shared therapeutic knowledge and projects.

A história desvelada no Juquery: assistência psiquiátrica intramuros na ditadura cívico-militar

Douglas Sherer Sakaguchi; João Fernando Marcolan

Objective To unveil the unofficial history of psychiatric care at the time of the civic-military dictatorship. Methods This is a descriptive, exploratory, investigative, qualitative study that uses content analysis. Interviews were conducted with former employees of the psychiatric hospital Hospicio do Juquery. Two interviews were registered, and the others recorded and transcribed. Results Processes involving care were accompanied by the use of violence, encouraged by the dynamics of the institution. Like the policy at the time, the unveiled psychiatric care points to rigid, authoritarian rules, and to the annihilation of forms of subjectivity, a true process of reification of individuals. A strong relationship between the violence practiced and the therapy involving knowledge/scientific power was noted. Conclusion The state should be responsible for having spread rampant repression through its ideological and repressive apparatus, such as the Hospicio. Analyzing the real facts that were concealed by the official history promotes understanding in an attempt to avoid the repetition of the violent practices and the dehumanization presented there.
