Effect of a school-based intervention to promote healthy lifestyles in 7–11 year old children

BackgroundPhysical inactivity is recognised as a public health concern within children and interventions to increase physical activity are needed. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of a school-based healthy lifestyles intervention on physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, body composition, knowledge, and psychological variables.MethodA non-randomised controlled study involving 8 primary schools (4 intervention, 4 control). Participants were 589 children aged 7–11 years. The intervention lasted 10 months and comprised a CD-rom learning and teaching resource for teachers; an interactive website for pupils, teachers and parents; two highlight physical activity events (1 mile school runs/walks); a local media campaign; and a summer activity wall planner and record. Primary outcome measures were objectively measured physical activity (pedometers and accelerometers) and fruit and vegetable consumption. Secondary outcomes included body mass index, waist circumference, estimated percent body fat, knowledge, psychological variables. Multi-level modelling was employed for the data analysis.ResultsRelative to children in control schools, those in intervention schools significantly increased their total time in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (by 9 minutes/day vs a decrease of 10 minutes/day), their time in MVPA bouts lasting at least one minute (10 minutes/day increase vs no change) and increased daily steps (3059 steps per day increase vs 1527 steps per day increase). A similar pattern of results was seen in a subset of the least active participants at baseline. Older participants in intervention schools showed a significant slowing in the rate of increase in estimated percent body fat, BMI, and waist circumference. There were no differences between groups in fruit and vegetable intake. Extrinsic motivation decreased more in the intervention group.ConclusionThe intervention produced positive changes in physical activity levels and body composition. It appeared to have little or no effect on consumption of fruit and vegetables. Schools are a suitable setting for the promotion of healthy lifestyles although more work, particularly focussed on dietary change, is needed in a variety of schools and social settings.

A heat acclimation protocol for team sports

Background: It is well documented that heat acclimation of six or more sessions of at least 60 min duration prolongs the time to exhaustion during endurance walking, cycling and running in the heat. However, this type of acclimation is not specific to team sport activity and the effect of acclimation on prolonged high-intensity intermittent running has not yet been investigated. Objective: To assess the impact of an intermittent acclimation protocol on distance run during team sport activity. Methods: The impact of four short heat acclimation sessions (30–45 min of the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test; LIST) on high-intensity intermittent running capacity (LIST) in the heat (30°C, 27% relative humidity (RH)), was examined. Seventeen female well-trained games players were split into three groups: an acclimation group (30°C, 24% RH), a moderate training group (18°C, 41% RH) and a control group who did not complete any training between the main trials (pre-acclimation and post-acclimation). The pre-acclimation (A) and post-acclimation (B) trials were separated by 28 days to control for menstrual phase and verified using hormonal analysis. The four acclimation or moderate training sessions utilising the LIST were completed with one or two rest days interspersed between each session in a 10-day period prior to the post-acclimation trial (B). Results: In the post-acclimation trial distance run was increased by 33% in the acclimation group (A: 7703 (SEM 1401) m vs B: 10215 (SEM 1746) m; interaction group × trial p<0.05), but was unchanged in the moderate and control groups. The acclimation group had a lower rectal temperature (interaction group × trial × time p<0.01) due to a lower rate of rise, and an increase in thermal comfort1 after acclimation (End A: 7 (SEM 2) vs 6 (SEM 2); interaction group × trial p<0.01). There was no difference in serum progesterone, aldosterone or cortisol concentrations following acclimation or between groups. Conclusion: Four 30–45 min sessions of intermittent exercise induced acclimation, and resulted in an improvement in intermittent running exercise capacity in female games players. A lower rectal temperature and a concomitant rise in thermal comfort may be partly responsible for the improvement in exercise capacity.

Physiological and metabolic responses of female games and endurance athletes to prolonged, intermittent, high-intensity running at 30° and 16°C ambient temperatures

Abstract Eight female games players (GP) and eight female endurance athletes (EA) ran intermittently at high-intensity and for prolonged periods in hot (30°C) and moderate (16°C) ambient temperatures. The subjects performed a two-part (A, B) test based on repeated 20-m shuttle runs. Part A comprised 60 m of walking, a maximal 15-m sprint, 60 m of cruising (90% maximal oxygen uptake, V˙O2max) and 60 m of jogging (45% V˙O2max) repeated for 75 min with a 3-min rest every 15 min. Part B involved an exercise and rest pattern of 60-s running at 100% V˙O2max and 60-s rest which was continued until fatigue. Although the GP and EA did not respond differently in terms of distances completed, performance was 25 (SEM 4)% less (main effect trial, P < 0.01) in the hot (HT) compared with the moderate trial (MT). Sprints of 15 m took longer to complete in the heat (main effect, trial, P < 0.01), and sprint performance declined during HT but not MT (interaction, trial × time, P < 0.01). A very high correlation was found between the rate of rise in rectal temperature in HT and the distance completed [GP, r =−0.94, P < 0.01; EA (n = 7), r = −0.93, P < 0.01]. Blood lactate [La− ]b and plasma ammonia [NH3]p1 concentrations were higher for GP than EA, but were similar in HT and MT [La− ]b, HT: GP vs EA, 8.0 (SEM 0.9) vs 4.9 (SEM 1.1) mmol · l−1; MT: GP vs EA, 8.0 (SEM 1.3) vs 4.4 (SEM 1.2) mmol · l−1; interaction, group × time, P < 0.01; [NH3]p1, HT: GP vs EA, 70.1 (SEM 12.7) vs 43.2 (SEM 6.1) mmol · l−1; MT: GP vs EA, 76.8 (SEM 8.8) vs 32.5 (SEM 3.8) μmol · l−1; interaction, group × time, P < 0.01. Ad libitum water consumption was higher in HT [HT: GP vs EA, 18.9 (SEM 2.9) vs 13.5 (SEM 1.7) ml · kg−1 · h−1; MT: GP vs EA, 12.7 (SEM 3.7) vs 8.5 (SEM 1.5) ml · kg−1 · h−1; main effect, group, n.s.; main effect, trial, P < 0.01]. These results would suggest that elevated body temperature is probably the key factor limiting performance of prolonged, intermittent, high-intensity running when the ambient temperature is high, but not because of its effect on the metabolic responses to exercise.

Validity of vertical jump measurement devices.

Abstract Vertical jump height is thought to provide a valuable index of muscular power, which is an important factor in sports performance and for assessing the mobility and functional capacity of injured or aged individuals. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the criterion validity of four popular devices for measuring vertical jump height. A belt mat, contact mat, portable force plate, and Vertec were compared to a criterion device, a laboratory force plate. Forty participants performed three maximal countermovement jumps on each device in a counterbalanced order, using block randomization. The criterion device presented the highest mean value (50.3 cm). The portable force plate and belt mat devices recorded similar jump height values to the criterion device (within 1 cm). The contact mat and Vertec devices recorded significantly lower values than the criterion device (P < 0.001). The mean difference ± limits of agreement were: belt mat −0.1 ± 5.5 cm, contact mat −11.7 ± 6.4 cm, portable force plate −0.8 ± 3.9 cm, and Vertec −2.4 ± 6.6 cm. In conclusion, the portable force plate and belt mat devices provided valid measures of vertical jump height, whereas the Vertec and contact mat devices did not.

Effect of the glycaemic index of pre-exercise carbohydrate meals on running performance

Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the effect of pre-exercise low and high glycaemic index (GI) carbohydrate meals on running performance. Eight endurance-trained male runners (mean age 33 years, s x =1.7; 63 ml · kg−1 · min−1, s x =1.8) completed two trials separated by at least 7 days in a counterbalanced design. Two hours before they were to run and after an overnight fast, each participant consumed an isocaloric meal containing either low (gi=37) or high (gi=77) GI carbohydrate foods (2.4 MJ; 65% carbohydrate; 15% protein; 20% fat) that provided 1.5 g carbohydrate per kilogram of body mass in random order. Each trial consisted of a 21-km performance run on a level treadmill. The participants were required to run at 70% during the first 5 km of the run. They subsequently completed the remaining 16 km in as short a time as possible. All participants achieved a faster performance time after the consumption of the low GI meal (low vs. high GI: 98.7 min, s x =2 vs. 101.5 min, s x =2; P<0.01). Blood glucose and serum free fatty acids concentrations were higher throughout the performance run in the low GI trial. Serum insulin concentrations were higher in the high GI trial during the postpandial resting period. However, there were no differences between trials in serum insulin or blood lactate concentrations throughout exercise. Compared with the high GI trial, carbohydrate oxidation was 9.5% lower and fat oxidation was 17.9% higher during exercise in the low GI trial. In conclusion, our results indicate that compared with an isocaloric high GI meal, the consumption of a low GI meal 2 h before a 21-km performance run is a more effective means of improving performance time.

The influence of a 6.5% carbohydrate-electrolyte solution on performance of prolonged intermittent high-intensity running at 30°C

Nine male student games players consumed either flavoured water (0.1 g carbohydrate, Na+ 6 mmol · l−1), a solution containing 6.5% carbohydrate-electrolytes (6.5 g carbohydrate, Na+ 21 mmol · l−1) or a taste placebo (Na+ 2 mmol · l−1) during an intermittent shuttle test performed on three separate occasions at an ambient temperature of 30°C (dry bulb). The test involved five 15-min sets of repeated cycles of walking and variable speed running, each separated by a 4-min rest (part A of the test), followed by 60 s run/60 s rest until exhaustion (part B of the test). The participants drank 6.5 ml · kg−1 of fluid as a bolus just before exercise and thereafter 4.5 ml · kg−1 during every exercise set and rest period (19 min). There was a trial order effect. The total distance completed by the participants was greater in trial 3 (8441 ± 873 m) than in trial 1 (6839 ± 512, P < 0.05). This represented a 19% improvement in exercise capacity. However, the trials were performed in a random counterbalanced order and the participants completed 8634 ± 653 m, 7786 ± 741 m and 7099 ± 647 m in the flavoured water (FW), placebo (P) and carbohydrate-electrolyte (CE) trials, respectively (P = 0.08). Sprint performance was not different between the trials but was impaired over time (FW vs P vs CE: set 1, 2.41 ± 0.02 vs 2.39 ± 0.03 vs 2.39 ± 0.03 s; end set, 2.46 ± 0.03 vs 2.47 ± 0.03 vs 2.47 ± 0.02 s; main effect time, P < 0.01). The rate of rise in rectal temperature was greater in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial (rise in rectal temperature/duration of trial, °C · h−1; FW vs CE, P < 0.05; P vs CE, N.S.). Blood glucose concentrations were higher in the carbohydrate-electrolyte than in the other two trials (FW vs P vs CE: rest, 4.4 ± 0.1 vs 4.3 ± 0.1 vs 4.2 ± 0.1 mmol · l−1; end of exercise, 5.4 ± 0.3 vs 6.4 ± 0.6 vs 7.2 ± 0.5 mmol · l−1; main effect trial, P < 0.05; main effect time, P < 0.01). Plasma free fatty acid concentrations at the end of exercise were lower in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial than in the other two trials (FW vs P vs CE: 0.57 ± 0.08 vs 0.53 ± 0.11 vs 0.29 ± 0.04 mmol · l−1; interaction, P < 0.01). The correlation between the rate of rise in rectal temperature (°C · h−1) and the distance completed was −0.91, −0.92 and −0.96 in the flavoured water, placebo and carbohydrate-electrolyte conditions, respectively (P < 0.01). Heart rate, blood pressure, plasma ammonia, blood lactate, plasma volume and rate of perceived exertion were not different between the three fluid trials. Although drinking the carbohydrate-electrolyte solution induced greater metabolic changes than the flavoured water and placebo solutions, it is unlikely that in these unacclimated males carbohydrate availability was a limiting factor in the performance of intermittent running in hot environmental conditions.

Match analysis of U9 and U10 english premier league academy soccer players using a global positioning system: relevance for talent identification and development.

Match analysis of U9 and U10 English Premier League Academy soccer players using a global positioning system: relevance for talent identification and development. J Strength Cond Res 29(4): 954–963, 2015—The purpose of this study was to examine the match activity profile of U9 and U10 elite soccer players and to establish if there were any differences between players who were subsequently retained or released by their clubs. Such information should prove valuable in the design of training programs for these very young players and in the talent identification and development process. A Global Positioning System was used to analyze 2–4 interacademy 6-a-side matches of English Premier League Academy players (U9: N = 22 and U10: N = 12) who trained 3 times a week (4.5 hours). Speed zones were created based on 5 and 10-m sprint times, and an independent sample t-test was employed for a statistical analysis. Both squads covered ∼4,000 m in total or ∼4,700 m·h−1 during a match (p = NS between squads), with the U10 squad tending to cover a greater distance at moderate (p = 0.10) and high speeds (p = 0.08) than the U9 squad. Retained group covered a greater distance than released group (retained vs. released: 4,478 ± 513 m vs. 4,091 ± 462 m, p < 0.05) during a match and covered a greater distance during low-speed running in absolute (1,226 ± 259 m vs. 1,005 ± 221 m, p < 0.05) and relative (1,325 ± 235 m·h−1 vs. 1,132 ± 210 m·h−1, p < 0.05) terms. Thus, U9 and U10 players cover over 4000 m in match play, and those players who are retained by academies cover a greater distance in total and at low speeds (2.1–3.1 m·s−1). This information may support the preparation of squad training programs and the talent identification and development process.

Physical activity and body composition outcomes of the GreatFun2Run intervention at 20 month follow-up

BackgroundPhysical inactivity is recognised as a public health concern within children and interventions to increase physical activity are needed. GreatFun2Run was a school-based healthy lifestyles intervention that showed positive changes in physical activity levels and body composition immediately post-intervention. The purpose of this paper was to examine whether these changes in physical activity and body composition were maintained 18-20 months after the intervention ended.MethodParticipants (n = 589, aged 7-11 yrs) from 4 intervention and 4 control schools took part in the 10-month intervention, of which 421 (71%) were present for follow-up. The intervention comprised a CD-rom learning and teaching resource for teachers; an interactive website for pupils, teachers and parents; two highlight physical activity events (1 mile school runs/walks); a local media campaign; and a summer activity wall planner and record. Randomisation was not possible because of local media content. Outcome measures were objectively measured physical activity (pedometers and accelerometers) and body composition variables (body mass index, waist circumference, estimated percent body fat, and sum of skinfolds). Teacher interviews and participant focus groups were conducted. Multi-level modelling was employed for the data analysis.ResultsBoth control and intervention participants had increased their physical activity at follow-up but there was no group by time interaction (control: 2726 steps per day increase; intervention 3404 steps per day increase, p > .05). There were significant increases in estimated percent body fat, sum of skinfolds, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) with increasing age. In the control group, there was evidence for a plateauing in the rate of change in all body composition variables with increasing age, except BMI. In contrast, significant interaction terms suggest that the rate of change in waist circumference, BMI and BMISDS continued to increase with age in the intervention group. Teacher interviews suggested that because of time pressures, competing resources, curriculum demands and staff changes the majority of teachers had not continued to use the resources.ConclusionsWhile the intervention initially produced positive changes in physical activity levels and body composition, these changes were not sustained once the intervention ended. Facilitating long-term health behaviour change in children remains a challenge.

Effect of exercise on postprandial endothelial function in adolescent boys.

The ingestion of high-fat meals induces a state of endothelial dysfunction in adults. This dysfunction is attenuated by prior exercise. The response of young people to these nutritional and physiological stressors has not been established. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to investigate if a bout of moderate-intensity exercise influenced endothelial function (as indicated by flow-mediated dilation (FMD)) following the ingestion of a high-fat breakfast and lunch in adolescent boys (aged 12·6-14·3 years). Two, 2 d main trials (control and exercise) were completed by thirteen adolescent boys in a counter-balanced, cross-over design. Participants were inactive on day 1 of the control trial, but completed 60 min of walking at 60 % peak oxygen uptake in the exercise trial. On day 2, endothelial function was assessed via FMD prior to, and following, ingestion of a high-fat breakfast and lunch. There was no difference in fasting FMD between the control and exercise trial (P= 0·449). In the control trial, FMD was reduced by 32 % following consumption of the high-fat breakfast and by 24 % following lunch. In the exercise trial, the corresponding reductions were 6 and 10 %, respectively (main effect trial, P= 0·002). These results demonstrate that moderate-intensity exercise can attenuate the decline in FMD seen following the consumption of high-fat meals in adolescent boys.

A field-test battery for elite, young soccer players.

The validity and reliability of a battery of field-based performance tests was examined. The opinions of coaches, fitness professionals and players (n=170, 172 and 101 respectively) on the importance of performance testing were established using a questionnaire. On 2 occasions, separated by 7 days, 80 elite, young soccer players (mean±SD [and range]: age 13.2±2.6 [8.9-19.1] years; stature 1.59±0.18 m [1.32-1.91]; body mass 50.6±17.1 [26.5-88.7] kg) completed a battery of field-based tests comprised of heart rate response to a submaximal Multi-stage fitness test, 3 types of vertical jump, sprints over 10 and 20 m, and an agility test. Physical performance testing was considered important by coaches (97%), fitness professionals (94%) and players (83%). The systematic bias ratio and the random error components of the 95% ratio limits of agreement for the first and second tests, for the U9-U11 vs. U12-U14 vs. U15-U18 age groups, were [Systematic bias (*/÷ ratio limits)]: Heart rate (Level 5): 0.983 (*/÷ 1.044) vs. 0.969 (*/÷ 1.056) vs. 0.983 (*/÷ 1.055); Rocket jump: 0998 (*/÷ 1.112) vs. 0.999 (*/÷ 1.106) vs. 0.996 (*/÷ 1.093); 10 m sprint: 0.997 (*/÷ 1.038) vs. 0.994 (*/÷ 1.033) vs. 0.994 (*/÷ 1.038); Agility test: 1.010 (*/÷1.050) vs. 1.014 (*/÷1.050) vs. 1.002 (*/÷1.053). All tests, except heart rate recovery from the Multi-stage fitness test, were able to distinguish between different ability and age groups of players (p<0.05). Thus, the field-test battery demonstrated logical and construct validity, and was shown to be a reliable and objective tool for assessing elite, young soccer players.
