Phosphorus is recognized as a key nutrient to obtain high productivity and macronutrient that has been most often limits the production in soil poor in nutrient. With the objective of evaluating the influence of phosphorus levels and cultivars on yield and storage postharvest was carried one trial in Petrolina-PE, Brazil, from May to December 2011. The experimental design was a completely randomized block in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, composed of five phosphorus levels (0; 60; 120, 180 and 240 kg ha-1) and two cultivar (Franciscana IPA-10 e Vale Ouro IPA-11) with four replications. The Franciscana IPA-10 cultivars (74.6 t ha-1) and Vale Ouro IPA-11 (76.1 t ha-1) showed no significant differences in commercial yield of bulbs. Highest commercial yield were obtained at dose of 132 kg ha-1 P2O5 was associated with economical dose of 130 kg ha-1 P2O5. It was verified with increasing levels, a gradual reduction in the production of bulbs considered non-commercial (culls), and the lower production estimated of culls was estimated dose of 121 kg ha-1 P2O5. Commercial bulbs of higher fresh mass and diameter were obtained with the increment of phosphorus. There was no loss of significant mass after 30 days cure at doses or cultivars. At 60 after curing, it was detected a significant effect only for cultivars with less loss to cultivar Franciscana IPA-10 (27.2%) compared the cultivar Vale Ouro IPA-11 (31.9%).

Carrot is the fourth most consumed vegetable in Brazil and one of the most consumed one worldwide. Considering the need to adapt genotypes for organic systems, this study aimed to evaluate carrot cultivars under organic cultivation in Petrolina, Pernambuco State, Brazil, under conditions of high temperatures (summer). The experiment was carried out from December 2009 to March 2010, using a randomized block design with twelve cultivars (Alvorada, Brasilia, Brazlândia, Carandai, Danvers, Karine, Kuronan, Marly, Nantes, Shin Kuroda, Suprema and Tropical). The plant height ranged from 49 to 63 cm, cultivar Brasilia presenting the highest plants (63 cm). Total yield of roots ranged from 26.9 to 58.6 t/ha, cultivars Brasilia (58.6 t/ha) and Brazlândia (56.0 t/ha) being the most productive ones, without significant differences between them. Yield of roots ranged from 22.3 to 53.5 t/ha, the highest yield being presented by the cultivar Brasilia (53.5 t/ha). Root fresh mass of the highest-yielding cultivars ranged from 66 to 77.6 g. Brasilia, Brazlândia and Kuronan cultivars, due to the best agronomical characteristics, are recommended for planting in organic farming system with high temperatures.

The experiment was carried out from June to October 2008 in Tres Coracoes, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. It was in a completely randomized design, in factorial scheme 2x3 with three replications. The first factor corresponded to two installation times of the mulching (before and after transplanting) and the second was related to three mulching colors (black, silver and white). The strawberry seedlings (cv. Oso Grande) were transplanted on June 6, 2008. The harvest began 75 days after transplanting date, being extended until mid October. Average number of fruits per plant, fruits average length (cm), average fruits fresh mass (g plant-1), average number of leaves per plant and average leaflet length (cm) were evaluated. The average number of fruits and fresh mass showed significant effect in the interaction between the two factors. Average fruit length and number of leaves presented significant effect only for the mulch factor. Thus, in the condition that the experiment was carried out, we can conclude that the black and the silver mulches enabled a yield increase and better fruits development, since it was installed before seedling transplanting.

Our study was conducted in the experimental field of the Department of Technology and Social Sciences (DTCS) of the State University of Bahia UNEB, Juazeiro-BA. The experimental design was comprised of randomized blocks, sub-subdivided in plots, with four replicates comprising the plots of three different shading methods, gray shading screen (GS), red shading screen (RS), and blue shading screen (BS), and the control treatment with no shading. The subplots comprised three mini-tomato cultivars (“Sweet Million”, “Red Sugar”, and “Shani”), and sub-subplots consisted of seven sampling times. The traits evaluated were: dry matter accumulation in leaves, stems, roots, and fruits, total dry matter, shoot length, root length, total number of fruits, and overall yield. The results of the growth analysis showed that dry matter accumulation in organs of mini tomatoes was similar in all treatments and that the highest total dry matter accumulation occurred under RS. In all treatments, fruit was the preferential drainage; however, the cultivar “Red Sugar” showed higher dry matter accumulation in other plant organs. “Red Sugar” also showed the highest number of fruits per plant; however, when we evaluated total productivity, “Sweet Million” and “Shani” showed similar, higher values than “Red Sugar”.
