Purpose – This paper seeks to identify collaboration elements and evaluate their intensity in the Brazilian supermarket retail chain, especially the manufacturer‐retailer channel.Design/methodology/approach – A structured questionnaire was elaborated and applied to 125 representatives from suppliers of large supermarket chains. Statistical methods including multivariate analysis were employed. Variables were grouped and composed into five indicators (joint actions, information sharing, interpersonal integration, gains and cost sharing, and strategic integration) to assess the degree of collaboration.Findings – The analyses showed that the interviewees considered interpersonal integration to be of greater importance to collaboration intensity than the other integration factors, such as gain or cost sharing or even strategic integration.Research limitations/implications – The research was conducted solely from the point of view of the industries that supply the large retail networks. The interviews were not...

This paper aims to ascertain the current state of collaborative logistics in the Brazilian supermarket retail chain through two quantitative studies: one concerning collaboration elements and logistics performance, and the other quantitative study focusing on collaboration elements and transaction costs. All of these elements are identified among the partners. The methodology consists of a qualitative analysis (using participative observations) and a quantitative analysis consisting of 125 representatives from 87 suppliers who evaluated Brazils four largest retailers. From statistical tests and regression analysis, the results confirmed that some collaborative elements positively influence the logistics performance of the firms, mainly when it concerns a differentiated logistic performance (urgent deliveries and deliveries in periods of high demand). Interpersonal integration contributes most to a higher intensity of collaboration, followed by strategic integration and tactical integration. Moreover, the increase in strategic collaboration and joint actions (tactical integration elements) contributes to the reduction in uncertainties between the participants and these joint actions also help to increase investment in specific assets.

This study focuses on the viability of fuzzy logic application to assist the management of a dairy industry in the process of decision-making in physical distribution logistics. The case study, carried out in a small dairy industry in the State of Minas Gerais, identified that, for each new order request via internet, the logistician copes with a large amount of information at the same time and decides, based on experience, the best way to distribute such orders. The purpose of this research was to present a fuzzy model as an alternative support to traditional methods for order processing and logistics decision-making. The results showed that the model adequately reproduced the problem proposed as it produced the same decisions made by the specialist and, if the weak points detected are observed, this model can be used as an important tool for the competitiveness of industries.

The purpose of this paper is to document the extent to which Brazilian companies in retail channels have committed to adopting environmental sustainability measures, goals and strategies for waste disposal in the evaluation and planning of sustainable transportation. This paper also aims to examine the different viewpoints of sustainability issues and the preventive actions taken by companies in terms of controlling carbon dioxide emissions and proper disposal of tires, lubricant oils, accessories and spare parts. Finally, taking the perspective of these companies, this paper examines their difficulties in meeting environmental regulations. The research involved a survey completed by 185 representatives of different types of companies, including shippers (represented by manufacturers), LSPs (logistics service providers) and carriers. The non-linear canonical correlation was calculated to verify the opinions of these representatives from different companies regarding issues that impact on the environment, the preventive actions they adopt to reduce their environmental impact and their difficulties in meeting environmental regulations. The results show that shippers and LSPs have the same perceptions regarding these sustainability issues and preventive actions. In addition, the companies perceive high costs and the lack of training for their partners as the major challenges experienced in addressing these issues and undertaking preventive actions. Therefore they need to plan their transportation activities.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of logistics collaboration, meetings, relationship history, and supplier selection on the logistics performance of shippers, carriers, and logistics services providers. Rather than focusing on collaboration and performance, the research provides a wide analysis of how logistics collaboration and performance interact with other organizational practices.,To investigate the interaction among the constructs, the authors proposed a structural equation model to understand the influence of meetings, relationship history, supplier selection, and collaboration on logistics performance. The data were obtained through a survey of 199 managers of Brazilian companies in the retail sector.,Supplier selection has the strongest effect on logistics collaboration, and relationship history has the strongest effect on logistics performance. Rather than meetings and operational features, the elements of interpersonal skills, organizational culture, and communication appear to be the most important contributors to logistics performance achievements; relationship history leads to better performance.,This study contributes to our understanding of how and with whom to collaborate by highlighting the relationships among supplier selection, relationship history, meetings, and logistics collaboration and logistics performance.

ABSTRACT This article aims to analyze how personal characteristics relate to decision-making style, considering the cultural environment in logistics decisions. This empirical research is tested using descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s Alpha and nonparametric correlation with 49 logistics decision-makers who work in manufacturing and service sectors. Results show that top managers’ representatives bear the following characteristics: higher openness to new experiences, goal and accomplishment orientation, greater agreeableness (being easy to deal with on a daily basis), high risk aversion, and elevated spontaneity. In addition, top managers bore lower emotional involvement, and deliberated less in decisions.

This paper is based on a revelatory single-case study that uses a system dynamics model to analyze the costs and policies of a distribution logistics outsourcing process (i.e., the warehousing and transportation activities) of a Brazilian consumer packaged goods (CPG) company. The model considers the costs before and after the outsourced operation startup and how these costs influence the net present value (NPV) of the process. The model’s findings suggest policies, such as the reduction of the ex-ante period and the ex-ante reactive and proactive monitoring of operations, to obtain optimal financial results. In addition, the model provides guidelines for the contract lengths and demonstrates that in the outsourcing process, the greatest gains result during periods of low inflation and low interest rates in a stable economy.

The goal of this work is to use computational methods for visual data analysis in order to obtain a structure for analysis (classification) of the indices related to the concepts of collaboration between supplier and customer . It is desired to know the collaborative barriers and to assess the behavior of groups of companies according to these indices. For the development of this work, a dataset of consumer-goods industries was used for evaluating the collaboration with their client partner. The results showed a new classification propose for the collaborative index; what are the most collaborative enterprises according to location, number of employees, and sub-sectors; and the factors that more evidently represent collaborative barriers, such as: change of company culture, and the low-profit investment. Key words: Collaboration, visual data analysis, collaboration barriers.
