The adaptation of the Spanish university system to the European Higher Education Area [EHEA] has led to the reorganization of the higher education system in Spain. In this context, the article discusses the existence of Geography in the different curricula of academic degrees, in Geography degrees and Land-Use Planning degrees, as the most common denominator, and in other academic degrees of the different branches of knowledge in which the main fields of study are grouped: Arts and Humanities, Social and Legal Sciences, Sciences and Engineering and Architecture. Due to the long well-established relationship, a special mention should be made to the teaching of Geography in the Teacher Training Schools, which are now Education Faculties.

Livestock farming is the predominant factor of spatial organization in the Guadarrama mountain range (Segovia), although cattle activity has been in a long decline since the 1950s. The numbers of farms and livestock have decreased and the handling of animals and land use have been simplified. A crisis occurred in the traditional system and its territorial model, and this has been replaced by a traditional-degraded spatial organization. It is the “survival” of tradition, which can also be seen in the long process of depopulation: the number of inhabitants, the size of the villages and the number of settlements have decreased, while the age of the population has increased. Thus, “survival” is conditioned by population depletion.

Demographic and urban processes in the spatial transformation of the city of Avila The city of Avila is configured, currently, as a compact urban structure. This space has seen a unprecedented growth over the last sixty years and, particularly, during the first decade of the new century, which is not always reciprocated between the population evolution and residential development. An extension of the urban space -whose strategic support has also established based on the dialectic between center and periphery- sized exorbitantly by the conjunction of a number of urban interests completely truncated by the economic crisis. This way to continue building the city -which are stated explicitly by urban planning- seems to be more a utopia than a reality, according to population projections that herald a demographic horizon not flattering.
