Renata Buarque Goulart Coutinho; Teresia Diana L. v. A. de Macedo-Soares; José Roberto Gomes da Silva

This article presents a conceptual framework which was developed as part of a research aimed at investigating management models adopted by firms in Brazil to conduct their social projects, how they fit project characteristics, and the implications for their effectiveness and sustainability. Firstly, the article shares the results of a wide-range review of the literature, undertaken to identify concepts and constructs which could support the building of the framework. The research also identifies the interaction of various factors that may have implications for project effectiveness and sustainability. Based on Kerlingers (1973) recommendations regarding concept operationalization, a description is made of how the main constructs adopted in the research were defined. These were then broken down into dimensions, to which indicators were attributed. An explanation is given of how the resulting framework can be used to guide empirical research into social projects developed by firms in Brazil, and also its importance for project managers in their analyses of the fit between various intervening factors, in order to ensure the greater effectiveness and sustainability of results.

Sentimentos, subjetividade e supostasresistências à mudança organizacional

José Roberto Gomes da Silva; Sylvia Constant Vergara

Many of the texts in change management literature approach the theme almost exclusively in a planning perspective, trying to find answers on issues as: how to make an organization being successful in its strategy for intentional change, promoting a cohesion of efforts and eliminating the supposed human resistances? Little attention has been dedicated, however, to individuals’ emotions, to the sense they attribute toorganizational change, and to their chances to become subjects in such context. This research, accomplished in five organizations in Rio deJaneiro, has the objective of trying to fill this kind of lack, by means of 75 interviews with employees that have participated in great changes facedby those organizations. The results point to the fragility of some of the myths about the concept of resistance, and suggest the possibility to turnorganizational change less traumatic for individuals, by means of the opportunities they find to constitute themselves as subjects and to makesense of their performance in the new context.

Organizational Change and the Meaning of Time

José Roberto Gomes da Silva; Ursula Wetzel

This paper probes into the social process of sense making in changing organizations, trying to observe how participant individuals interpret contextual events and configure their notion of time. This notion of time then interacts with the dynamics of the lives of individuals and contributes to the adaptation to the new reality they are facing. The study was conducted in eight organizations and data were collected by means of 133 in-depth interviews with participants in the change processes. Results indicate that individuals establish a reference to central events in their attempt to make sense out of changes and in their effort to adapt to the new situation. In accordance with Lewis and Weigert (1981), the results also indicate the dominance of institutional time over interaction time as well as over self time. Finally, the results suggest that such configurations of time are influenced by official organizational rhetoric and by actions in change management

One of the challenges for organizational studies is that of trying to create their own language from knowledge generated in other sciences, often resulting in an oversimplified translation of concepts. In the case of organizational communication, this challenge is even more complex, as communication is traditionally viewed by hmaavnea gbeemene ndt ivtheersoirfiieesd .i nT hai sm tohreeo irnestticruaml eensstaaly paenrsaplyescetisv et,h ew hpiloes saipbpilirtoieasch oefs ainp portohxeirm aarteinags Management and Language Studies areas in order to develop research on organizational communication and help organizations solve their practical managerial problems. The source of inspiration are the experiences of an interdisciplinary research group that seeks an interdisciplinary approach based on the joint production of knowledge by researchers of obfo tcho nacreepatss, arantdh emr etthhaond so.n T thhee rcerfolescstiinogn so fp rdeissecinptleinda rsyh obwo utnhdaat roiens oanned hthane dm, eitr eis imnopto artlwataioyns easy to negotiate the investigative logics and tools used in the process; on the other hand, this exercise may facilitate the production of new knowledge in both areas, with practical relevance for the organizational context.
