The objective of this trial was to evaluate carcass characteristics, cuts yield, tissues proportion, and chemical composition and fatty acid profile of the Longissimus dorsi of feedlot kids fed diets, in which soybean hulls (SH) replaced ground corn grain (GCG). Fifteen Boer x Saanen male kids were assigned to a completely randomized design (five animals per treatment) and slaughtered at 33.82 ± 4.40 kg of body weight. Diets were composed by star grass hay (Cynodon spp), soybean meal, GCG and/or SH, and minerals. Ground corn grain was replaced by SH in the diet as follows: 0% SH (GCG), 50% (SH50) and 100% (SH100). Carcass characteristics were not affected by the increasing levels of SH in the diet. However, yield of retail cuts from the loin and neck differed across treatments. Percentage of meat from the Longissimus dorsi muscle was not affected by increasing SH in the diet but kids fed GCG diet showed greater proportion of fat and lower of bone compared to SH50 and SH100 treatments. The chemical composition and the fatty acid profile of the Longissimus dorsi muscle were similar among treatments although its cholesterol content was greater when SH was included in the diet. Soybean hulls can replace GCG in the diet because no significant changes were observed in the characteristics of carcass and meat.

Twenty-seven Boer x Saanen goat kids (15 males and 12 females) averaging 25.75 ± 3.80 kg of initial BW were used in a completely randomized design to evaluate the effects of replacing ground corn grain (GCG) with soybean hulls (SH) on performance and apparent digestibility of nutrients. Diets contained star grass hay (Cynodon spp.), soybean meal, minerals, and one of the following levels of SH: 0% (GCG diet), 50% (SH50) or 100% (SH100). The experimental period lasted 42 days and indigestible NDF was used as the internal marker to estimate fecal output and apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients. There was no difference among treatments for the intakes of DM, OM, and CP as well as for the average daily gain and feed conversion. Replacing GCG with SH in the diet decreased the apparent total tract digestibilities of DM, OM, and CP and increased those of NDF and starch. The in vitro DM digestibility was greatest on GCG, intermediate on SH50, and lowest on SH100 diet while no significant differences were observed for cell was digestibility across treatments. Performance of growing kids was not affected by replacing all dietary GCG with SH. However, digestibility of DM, OM, and CP decreased while that of NDF increased by including SH on diets of growing kids.

Este trabalho foi conduzido com os objetivos de avaliar a ingestao e a digestibilidade da materia seca e dos nutrientes e estimar o valor energetico de racoes com 0; 25; 50; 75 ou 100% de casca do grao de soja em substituicao ao milho moido na dieta de cabritos. As racoes foram compostas de feno de aveia, milho moido e/ou casca do grao de soja, farelo de soja e suplemento mineral. Foram utilizados cinco cabritos da raca Saanen (32,44 ± 4,00 kg) alojados em gaiolas de digestibilidade em delineamento quadrado latino 5 × 5. Foram realizadas coletas totais de fezes utilizando-se sacolas de lona. Cada periodo foi composto de 12 dias (sete dias para adaptacao a racao e cinco dias para coletas). As ingestoes de materia seca (MS), materia orgânica (MO), proteina bruta (PB), carboidratos totais (CT) e nutrientes digestiveis totais (NDT) nao foram alteradas pela inclusao de casca do grao de soja nas racoes. No entanto, para a ingestao de extrato etereo, FDN e amido, houve efeito linear dos niveis de casca do grao de soja. Para as digestibilidades da MS, MO, PB, CT, FDN, amido e para os NDT, foram observados efeitos quadraticos e a digestibilidade do extrato etereo nao foi alterada. A inclusao de casca do grao de soja em niveis de ate 75% nas racoes de cabritos melhora a digestibilidade e o valor energetico das dietas, mantendo-se a viabilidade economica.
