IntroductionPharynx is a muscular organ with is sustained by craniofacial bones. It is divided into nasal, oral and hipopharynx, and can be considered as a tube that serves both respiratory and digestive systems. Its anatomical morphology permits that factors facilitate its obstruction, leading to the sleep apnea syndrome. One of the treatment consists of surgical mandibular advancement, increasing pharyngeal dimensions. The aim of this study was evaluate the cephalometric changes in the pharyngeal airway space after orthognathic surgery procedures for correction of mandibular prognathism.Materials and MethodsPre and post-operative cephalometric analysis was performed on 19 patients submitted to mandibular setback by mandibular bilateral sagittal split osteotomy associated with maxillary advancement by Le Fort I osteotomy, using the Dolphin Imaging 10.0 software.ResultsResults did not reveal statistically significant changes in the upper (nasopharyngeal), middle (oropharyngeal) and lower (hypopharyngeal) airway spaces, but showed increase in the nasal pharynx due the maxillary advancement and a lower position of the hyoid bone due the mandibular setback.DiscussionMaxillomandibular orthognathic surgery for correction of mandibular prognathism does not seem to statistically significantly change the pharyngeal airway space, but it increases the maxillary airway.ConclusionIt seems to be important to consider the double jaw surgery in cases of mandibular prognathism, aiming prevention of a possible reduction of whole upper airway.

Tertiary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is a rare condition that affects patients with secondary HPT, which develop hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands, thus causing an increase in parathyroid hormone levels. Bone alterations are the main consequences of this condition including the development of osteolytic lesions called brown tumor. This article reports an unusual case of brown tumors located in the maxilla and mandible in a 19-year-old man with chronic renal failure with hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands. The lesions regressed approximately 5 months after the parathyroidectomy. At this same time, the patient underwent renal transplant. The patient was followed for 5 years, showing improvement in overall clinical status. There was also improvement of the results of laboratory tests and the pattern of trabecular bone. The correct diagnosis of oral lesions was of great relevance for the conservative treatment could have been chosen.

BackgroundParanasal sinus osteomas are rare benign tumors. Although various theories such as trauma and infection have been proposed, it is difficult to establish the pathogenesis of osteoma. Osteomas may be detected with routine radiographic examination or the tumors may enlarge and cause symptoms. Osteomas most frequently occur in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses, and are rare in the maxillary sinus.Case reportIn the present study, we report a case of an 18-year-old woman with a maxillary sinus osteoma. Radiographically, the tumor was characterized as a radiopaque, well-delimited lesion in the periapical region of teeth 27 and 28 that had positive sensitivity test. After computed tomographic scanning and complete removal of the tumor, the histopathological diagnosis was osteoma. After 1xa0year of follow-up, the patient shows no signs of recurrence.

Meus sinceros agradecimentos. Aguardamos todos para desfrutar no proximo ano em nossa acolhedora e calorosa morada do sol, Patos, a Capital do Sertao Paraibano. in the literature regarding the existence of this syndrome because many patients with an elongated styloid apophysis do not exhibit any clinical symptoms, which brings into question the cause-andeffect relationship of the radiologic finding. Severe cases require surgical resection of the styloid apophysis, provided that there is no response to treatment with analgesia and anti-inflammatory agents. Although patient 1 reported being unable to perform activities of daily living because of pain symptoms, her clinical condition improved with drug treatment. Knowledge of this syndrome is of paramount importance to dental surgeons. The choice of treatment to be used in cases of ES should consider the cost-benefit ratio of the surgical procedure and the degree of impairment to activities of daily living due to pain symptoms. Knowledge regarding this syndrome is important to dental surgeons.

The aim of this study was to report a case of two supernumerary teeth in the nasal cavity in a 22-year-old woman who presented pain, rhinorrhea, and inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinosinusitis). The computed tomograph scan showed two radiopaque images that were diagnosed as supernumerary nasal teeth. One was unerupted in the floor and the other inverted, and erupted on the floor on the left side of the nasal cavity. They were removed under general anesthesia, one through the palatine approach, and the other directly through the nasal cavity. The patient was followed for a year and there was no sign of recurrence of rhinosinusitis.
