Analyzing power in inclusive π+ and π− production at high xF with a 200 GeV polarized proton beam☆

The analyzing power in inclusive charged pion production has been measured using the 200 GeV Fermilab polarized proton beam. A striking dependence in x(F) is observed in which A(N) increases from 0 to 0.42 with increasing x(F) for the pi+ data and decreases from 0 to -0.38 with increasing x(F) for pi- data. The kinematic range covered is 0.2 less-than-or-equal-to x(F) less-than-or-equal-to 0.9 and 0.2 less-than-or-equal-to p(T) 2.0 GeV/c. In a simple model our data indicate that at large x(F) the transverse spin of the proton is correlated with that of its quark constituents.

The spin asymmetryAN for inclusive π0 production by 200-GeV transversely-polarized protons on a liquid hydrogen target has been measured at Fermilab over a wide range ofxF, with 0.5<pT<2 GeV/c. AtxF>0.3, the asymmetry rises with increasingxF and reaches a value ofAN=0.15±0.03 in the region 0.6<xF<0.8. This result provides new input regarding the question of the internal spin structure of transversely-polarized protons.

Abstract The total cross section for the process of the e+e- annihilation into hadrons has been measured at the centre-of-mass energies of 50 GeV and 52 GeV and a search has been made for new heavy quarks. The ratios R = σ(e+e- → hadrons)/σpoint(e+e- → μ+μ-) obtained are 4.4±0.5 at 50 GeV and 4.7±0.3 at 52 GeV, respectively. An additional systematic uncertainty is 10%. From the event shape analysis we found no evidence for a new quark with charge 2 3 e .

The design and performance of the FNAL high-energy polarized beam facility

We describe a new polarized-proton and -antiproton beam with 185-GeV/c momentum in the Fermilab MP beam line which is currently operational. The design uses the parity-conserving decay of lambda and antilambda hyperons to produce polarized protons and antiprotons, respectively. A beam-transport system minimizes depolarization effects and uses a set of 12 dipole magnets that rotate the beam-particle spin direction. A beam-tagging system determines the momentum and polarization of individual beam particles, allowing a selection of particles in definite intervals at momentum and polarization. We measured polarization of the beam by using two types of polarimeters, which verified the determination of polarization by a beam-particle tagging system. Two of these processes are the inverse-Primakoff effect and the Coulomb-nuclear interference (CNI) in elastic proton-proton scattering. Another experiment measured the {pi}{sup 0} production asymmetry of large-x{sub F} values; this process may now be used as an on-line beam polarimeter. 9 refs., 9 figs.

Abstract The two-spin parameter A LL in inclusive π 0 productionby longitudinally-polarized protons and antiprotons on a longitudinally-polarized proton target has been measured at the 200 GeV Fermilab spin physics facility, for π 0 s at x F =0 with 1⩽ p t ⩽3 GeV/ c . The results exclude, at the 95% confidence level, values of A LL (pp) > 0.1 and 0 s produced by protons, and values of A LL ( p p) > 0.1 and for incident antiprotons. The relevance of A LL (pp) for the gluon spin density is discussed. The data are in good agreement with “conventional”, small or zero, gluon polarization.

Measurements of the electron drift velocity and positive-ion mobility for gases containing CF4

Abstract Measurements of the electron drift velocity and positive-ion mobility for gases containing CF 4 have been performed. The results are presented for four types of gas mixtures containing CF 4 and hydrocarbons: CF 4 +CH 4 , CF 4 +C 2 H 6 , CF 4 +C 3 H 8 and CF 4 +iso-C 4 H 10 . To make a comparison, also positive-ion mobilities for Ar+C 2 H 6 and Ar+C 3 H 8 gas mixtures have been measured. The drift velocities of electrons in a few mixtures are found to exceed 10 cm/μs, twice that in a conventional drift chamber gas such as Ar(50%)+C 2 H 6 (50%). In particular, the electron drift velocity in CF 4 (10%)+CH 4 (90%) is larger than 10 cm/μs, even at a reduced electric field E / P of more than 1 V/(cm Torr). Results on the measurements of the positive ion mobility are consistent with the interpretation that the hydrocarbon ions are the positive ions eventually drifting toward the cathode in the studied gas mixtures. Their mobilities in CF 4 are found to be smaller than those in Ar.

New lead glasses for Cherenkov counters

Abstract Attempts have been made to improve the characteristics of glasses suitable for Cherenkov counters of the total-absorption type. Many kinds of new lead glasses were prepared and examined in the transmittance, radiation lengths, and methods of manufacturing. Several kinds of glass blocks having the dimension of 65 × 65 × 235 mm 3 were manufactured successfully. The transmittance of one of the new glasses is higher than the usual lead glass of F-2 ∗ . It was also found that the discoloration of the new glasses is smaller than the usual lead glasses upon irradiation of 60 Co γ rays of 10 4 to 10 7 Roentgens. The Cherenkov counters of the total-absorption type with the new glasses, together with the ones with usual lead glasses of F-2, SF-2, SF-5, and SF-6, were tested by using electron beams with energies from 300–1000 MeV. It was found that the energy resolution of the first ones is better by a few percents than that of the latter in the whole energy region.

Test of BaF2 scintillators coupled to a photomultiplier with a CsTe photocathode

Basic properties of BaF2 scintillators coupled to a photomultiplier with a CsTe photocathode have been investigated. The signal from the photomultiplier shows a drastic reduction of the slow component of the BaF2 scintillation light while preserving the good properties associated with the fast component.

Measurement of the proton-antiproton pair production from two-photon collisions at TRISTAN

Abstract The cross section of the γγ → p p reaction was measured at two-photon center-of-mass energy (Wγγ) between 2.2 and 3.3 GeV, using the two-photon process at an e+e− collider, TRISTAN. The Wγγ dependence of the cross section integrated over a c.m. angular region of | cos θ ∗ | is in good agreement with the previous measurements and the theoreticalv prediction based on diquark model in the high Wγγ region.

Determination of the QCD scale parameter ΛMS with QCD cascade on the basis of the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation

Abstract The relative production ratio of 3-jet events to the total number of hadronic events was studied in e+e− annihilations at centre-of-mass energies between 54 and 61.4 GeV. The QCD scale parameter has been determined to be Λ MS =254 −47 +55 ±56 MeV on the basis of a QCD cascade with the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation.
