Even though there is great interest in the fi eld of child abuse, there are few methods to assess it, which hinders the development of interventions. The Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory is considered effective in the early identifi cation of parents at risk of physically abusing their children, and a good tool to evaluate interventions in the fi eld of child abuse. This studys objective was to perform the CAP Inventorys criterion validity by comparing the results obtained by caregivers at a high risk of abusing their children with those obtained by caregivers at a low risk for child abuse. Two groups of parents participated in the study: a group of 20 parents reported for physically abusing their children and a group of 20 non-offending parents with the same socio-economic and educational levels. The results indicated the instrument is able to discriminate between the two groups, showing it to be a good tool for use in child protection services, to assess interventions, public policies, and research.E grande o interesse pelo tema da violencia contra a crianca, porem sao escassas suas formas de avaliacao, dificultando o desenvolvimento de intervencoes.
