Social Cognitive Predictors of Domain and Life Satisfaction: Exploring the Theoretical Precursors of Subjective Well-Being.

Robert W. Lent; Daniel Singley; Hung-Bin Sheu; Kathy A. Gainor; Bradley R. Brenner; Dana Treistman; Lisa Ades

Central variables of social cognitive theory were adapted to forge an integrative model of well-being, which was designed to offer greater utility for therapeutic and self-directed change efforts than the dominant personality view of well-being. The authors present 2 studies using versions of the social cognitive model to predict domain-specific and overall life satisfaction. In both studies-one nomothetic, the other idiographic in measurement approach-findings indicated that satisfaction in particular life domains is predicted by domain-specific social cognitive variables (e.g., self-efficacy, perceived goal progress, environmental resources). Domain satisfaction in valued life domains also explained unique variance in overall life satisfaction, even after controlling for trait positive affectivity or extraversion. Implications for theory, research, and counseling aimed at well-being promotion and maintenance are discussed.

Madonna G. Constantine; Mai M. Kindaichi; Sumie Okazaki; Kathy A. Gainor; Amanda L. Baden

This qualitative study explored the cultural adjustment experiences of 15 Asian Indian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese international college women through semistructured interviews. By using consensual qualitative research methodology (C. E. Hill, B. J. Thompson, & E. N. Williams, 1997), 6 primary domains or themes related to these womens cultural adjustment experiences were identified via data analysis: their feelings and thoughts about living in the United States, perceived differences between their country of origin and the United States, their English language acquisition and use, their prejudicial or discriminatory experiences in the United States, their peer and family networks, and their strategies for coping with cultural adjustment problems. Implications of the findings for mental health practice are discussed.

Independent and Interdependent Self-Construals, Individualism, Collectivism, and Harmony Control in African Americans.

Madonna G. Constantine; Kathy A. Gainor; Muninder K. Ahluwalia; LaVerne A. Berkel

The authors investigated the relationships among independent and interdependent self-construals (i.e., self-conceptualizations), dimensions of individualism and collectivism, and aspects of harmony control (i.e., the degree to which individuals are flexible in recognizing that their personal power stems from spiritual, social, and contextual forces) in a sample of 240 African American community college students. Results revealed that independent and interdependent self-construals and dimensions of individualism and collectivism were differentially related to various harmony control dimensions. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Depressive Symptoms and Attitudes Toward Counseling as Predictors of Biracial College Women's Psychological Help-Seeking Behavior

Madonna G. Constantine; Kathy A. Gainor

Abstract This study explored the extent to which biracial college womens attitudes toward counseling and reported depressive symptoms would predict their psychological help-seeking behavior. Results of a logistic regression analysis revealed that biracial college women with more favorable attitudes toward counseling were more likely to seek professional psychological help. In addition, biracial women with higher depression scores were more likely to seek professional mental health treatment. Implications of the findings for counseling center personnel are discussed.
