A basic study of the effect of flying ink on tone reproduction using electrostatically attracted ink jets

Kazuhisa Matsuo

This paper describes the results of the first quantitative examination of ink flight peculiar to the electrically extracted ink jet method using dielectric ink. In the state of ink flight determined by this method, a continuous cylindrical liquid thread is formed at the nozzle tip, then the ink at the thread end turns into corpuscles and spreads out in mist. The author has already reported the method used for observation and the recording method for tone reproduction. In this paper, an examination was made of the details of average and instantaneous structures of the state of ink flight, covering the wide area from the nozzle tip to the area past the electrodes, and the effect of the state of ink flight on the recording for tone reproduction was studied on the basis of the examination results. Detailed examinations were made of differences in tone, density distribution, and the relation of nozzle diameter to liquid thread diameter and to corpuscle diameter by varying the applied voltages and ink pressures. The results indicate that the ink jet which scatters in an atomized state from the liquid thread is effective in application to a high-quality recording for tone reproduction.

Application of electro-statically extracted ink-jet technology was studied in dyeing processing of Oshima-tsumugi-mushiro. It is needed to dye about 1mm width on that mushiro. Our results showed that, electrostatically extracted ink-jet technology was effective for application to dyeing processing automatically.

Laser observation of flying ink jet electrostatically extracted: main results and application to tone reproduction of images

Kazuhisa Matsuo

At present, there are several methods for measuring the diameter of droplets of ink jets. The authors have conceived a method by which not only the droplet diameter but also the state of ink jet flight can be determined using the same optical system by changing the light source only. The electrostatically extracted ink jet method using dielectric ink was used for the experiment. In the case of electrostatically extracted ink jet, a liquid thread of continuous flow is generated from the nozzle tip and disperses in corpuscles from the leading edge of the liquid thread. Observation of dispersing ink flight is difficult by any of the conventional methods. In their study, the state of ink from the liquid thread to corpuscles was observed by controlling applied voltage and ink pressure and with the use of an He-Ne laser beam or dye pulse laser beam depending on the observation objectives. Interesting results obtained are reported in this paper. In designing commercial models of printers using ink jets, their observation method presents new aspects for examining the state of flying ink.

A Method of Tone Reproduction Based on Electrostatic Ink Jet Using Dielectric-ink

Takehiko Tomikawa; Kazuhisa Matsuo; Kinji Matsumoto
