To improve the performance of PDPs, we developed an AC-PDP with the Delta Tri-color Arrangement (DelTA) cell structure and arc-shaped electrodes. The experimental panel has a pixel pitch of 1.08 mm and luminous efficiency of 3 lm/W at a luminance of 200 cd/m2. Moreover, its peak luminance can be greater than 1000cd/m2.

A new electron beam lithography system with a two-dimensional blanking aperture array (BAA) is proposed. The BAA produces 1024 individually controlled beams. The demagnification ratio of BAA on the wafer is 0.3%. An actual BAA device was fabricated and a preliminary experiment was carried out with a block exposure system and Si stencil mask. Very high resolution of 0.08µm holes was confirmed. The system parameters are designed by setting the system throughput at more than twenty 8-inch wafers per hour. Below a 0.2 µm minimum feature size, BAA exposure is suitable for random patterning of wiring layers in dynamic random access memories (DRAMs), application specified integrated circuit (ASICs) and microcode processing units (MPUs), and will be a useful lithographic tool.

P‐25: Secondary ‐Electron‐Emission Analysis of MgO Films in ac Plasma Displays

Manabu Ishimoto; Souichirou Hidaka; Keiichi Betsui; Tsutae Shinoda

The ion-induced secondary-electron-emission yield of MgO films by the ion gun method was successfully measured. Variations due to crystal orientation and ion kinetic energy were observed. Ejected electron energy showed correlation with the ionization energy of the gas.

To improve PDP performance, we developed an AC-PDP with the Delta Tri-Color Arrangement (DelTA) cell structure and arc-shaped electrodes. The experimental panel has a pixel pitch of 1.08 mm and luminous efficacy of 3 lm/W at a luminance of 200 cd/m 2 despite its conventional gas mixture of Ne and Xe (4%) and conventional phosphor set. Moreover, its peak luminance can be greater than 1000 cd/m 2 . The strong dependence of luminous efficacy on the sustain voltage is also discussed in this paper.

29.1: Low Cost Barrier Rib Formation Technologies for High Efficiency PDPs

Osamu Toyoda; Akira Tokai; Motonari Kifune; Kazunori Inoue; Koichi Sakita; Keiichi Betsui

Two new techniques of barrier rib formation applicable to a variety of structures for high-performance PDPs suitable for mass-production were developed. The two techniques are mold replication, using adhesives with a reusable mold, and direct glass sculpting. Both equipment investment and material costs were reduced from previous methods in each technique. The feasibility of each method was demonstrated by fabrication tests and measured performance of test panels.

25.2: Analysis of Deterioration of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ Phosphor for Plasma Display Panels

Using TEM, we studied the amorphous phase on a BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ phosphor surface deteriorated by VUV irradiation. This paper describes growth of the amorphous phase and shows that irradiation from the a-axis of the phosphor crystal intensively increased the growth of the amorphous phase, compared with the results of irradiation from the c-axis.

P-49: Improvement of Contrast Ratio in Bright-Ambient Color ACPDP with High Resolution

Noriyuki Awaji; Tadayoshi Kosaka; Keiichi Betsui; Fumihiro Namiki; Katsuya Irie; T. Shinoda

Contrast ratio in bright ambient is one of the most important factor of image quality in display picture. In this paper, it is reported that the contrast ratio is improved by applying a reflective structure with white ribs. The structure is applied to surface discharge ac-PDP with high resolution of 0.13mm, the contrast ratio is improved 1.5times higher than the conventional one. Moreover, luminance and luminous efficiency are improved 1.94 and 2.05 times higher with wider viewing angle.

Study of the effect of water on thermal and operating degradation of BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ (BAM) blue phosphor

— From the adsorption and desorption characteristics of water, we showed that water can intercalate into BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ blue phosphor. ESR, XANES, and XPS analyses confirmed that oxidation by water causes thermal degradation of BAM. We also demonstrated that intercalated water accelerates luminance degradation under VUV irradiation and showed oxidation of Eu2+ during panel operation by means of μ-XPS. We concluded that the cause of thermal and operating degradation of BAM is the oxidation of Eu2+ due to water.

44.2: Super‐High‐Resolution FLC Display Based on Field Sequential Color Method with Low Driving Voltage

We investigated the effect of a storage capacitor (Cs) on the driving voltage in ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) displays by which a TFT array drives the FLCs. The addition of Cs enabled a decrease in the driving voltage. When spontaneous polarization (Ps) was large, the decrease in the driving voltage was larger than when Ps was small. We were able to use 5V as the driving voltage of an FLC display. According to the prototype we built based on the field sequential color (FSC) method, we were able to achieve the characteristics of super-high-resolution (318 ppi), high-speed response (300 μs), and high color purity (greater than the NTSC standard).

42.2: Distinguished Paper: Effect of Water on Thermal and Operating Degradation of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ (BAM) Blue Phosphor

Toshiaki Onimaru; Shinya Fukuta; T. Misawa; Koichi Sakita; Keiichi Betsui

XANES and XPS analyses reconfirmed that oxidation by water causes thermal degradation of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ blue phosphor. We also confirmed that its operating degradation is due to photochemical reactions between Eu ions and water molecules under VUV irradiation.
