INTRODUCTION: The influence of ovarian and placental hormones on the immune system is still controverse in the literature. OBJECTIVES: Assess the influence of oophorectomy and pregnancy on the phagocytic function of phagocytic mononuclear system (PMS) in experimental model. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 45 adults female wistar rats were divided into three groups (n = 15): Group 1 - control, Group 2 - oophorectomized rats, Group 3 - pregnant rats. The phagocytic function of PMS was assessed by uptake of sulphur colloid labeled with 99mTc by liver, spleen and lung. The remnant colloid in the blood steam was verified by mears of a blood clot. The weight and radioactive level of the samples were measured and the results were compared by Students t test, with significance for p < 0.05. Histological analyses of these organs were also performed. RESULTS: The scintigraphic values were higher in liver followed by spleen and lung. The blood clot presented only little amount of radiation. The oophorectomized rats did not registered alterations in colloids uptake when compared with the control group. Although the pregnant rats registered lower radiation in the liver and higher in the lung no histological abnormality was found in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, pregnancy interferes with the phagocytic function of PMS, however oophorectomy does not seem to modify this function.

To assess the effects of oophorectomy on body weight, 60 adult female rats were divided into two groups (30 in each group): Group A -- young rats; Group B -- adult rats. The animals of each group were divided into three subgroups: Subgroup 1 (n= 6) -- control; Subgroup 2 (n= 6) -- laparotomy; Subgroup 3 (n= 18) -- bilateral oophorectomy. The weight of the animals was weekly assessed during 13 weeks and the results were compared by Student t test, with significance for p<0.05. The oophorectomized rats presented higher weight gain than those of the other groups. The difference was significant after eleven weeks, in Group A, and nine weeks, in Group B, until the end of the experiment. In the present work, bilateral oophorectomy in rats was related to higher body weight, independent on the age of the animals.

Ectopic schistosomiasis is uncommon and tends to occur when the parasites eggs or adult forms are located far from their normal site. This report presents the first described case of ectopic Schistosoma mansoni eggs inside a subcutaneous lipoma far from the tissues of this worms life cycle and with no connection to either portal veins or any other vascular system. These eggs were found inside giant cells surrounded by inflammatory cells. In conclusion, in humans, ectopic S. mansoni eggs can be found far from the tissues of the described life cycle of this worm, with no connection to portal veins or other blood vessels used for their migration.

OBJECTIVE To assess hematological and biochemical features of splenic effluent blood and their influence on the rise of hematological values after splenectomy. METHODS we studied 20 patients undergoing surgical treatment for schistosomatic portal hypertension. We collected blood samples for CBC, coagulation, bilirubin and albumin in the splenic vein (perioperative) and peripheral blood (immediately pre and postoperative periods). RESULTS the splenic blood showed higher values of red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, total leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils, as well as reduction of laboratory coagulation parameters in relation to peripheral blood collected preoperatively. In the postoperative peripheral blood there was an increase in the overall leukocytes and in their neutrophil component, and decreased levels of basophils, eosinophils and lymphocytes. The other postoperative variables of complete blood count and coagulation tests were not different compared with the splenic blood. The albumin values were lower postoperatively when compared to preoperative and splenic blood. There were higher values of direct bilirubin in the postoperative period when compared with the preoperative and splenic blood. Postoperative indirect bilirubin was lower compared to its value in the splenic blood. CONCLUSION hematological and biochemical values of splenic effluent blood are higher than those found in peripheral blood in the presence of schistosomal splenomegaly. However, the splenic blood effluent is not sufficient to raise the blood levels found after splenectomy.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a influencia da privacao dos hormonios ovarianos no ganho ponderal, em modelo experimental. METODO: Foram utilizadas 40 ratas femeas adultas, distribuidas aleatoriamente em tres grupos: Grupo 1 (n=10) - controle, Grupo 2 (n=10) - submetido apenas a laparotomia, Grupo 3 (n=20) - submetido a ooforectomia total bilateral.

added in the application of subcutaneous and superficial fascia, in order to avoid additional suffering the edge of the skin, which could worsen the condition of the wound to this technique. This modification improved the aesthetic appearance and location prevented the formation of the lateral wound scars. The objective of this report is to present a new technique for closure of extensive surgical wounds through elastic suture, using circular elastic rubber bands.

CONTEXT Alcoholists present an increase of iron hepatic concentration, although the responsible mechanisms for this deposition are still unknown. Despite the extensive literature related on the iron absorption in different pathological conditions, the effect of chronic ethanol consumption are still not conclusive and not completely understood. OBJECTIVE To verify the effect of chronic ethanol ingestion on duodenal absorption of iron. METHODS Ten male Swiss mice were divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 5) - control, and group 2 (n = 5) - water consumption with ethanol, as only water source. The animals were followed during 120 days. After this period, the duodenum was isolated and saline solution containing ascorbate of iron II in the 0,016 concentration of mg of iron element was infused. The effluent was collected in times 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 minutes. The results were analyzed by Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The significance was set for P<0.05. RESULTS No difference was found between iron absorption as well as iron absorption curves in groups 1 and 2. CONCLUSION The chronic consumption of ethanol did not alter iron absorption.

Alterations of the immune function during the pregnancy are not well understood. To assess the influence of pregnancy on the phagocytic function of the reticuloendothelial system twenty adult female rats were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n=10) - control, Group 2 (n=10) - pregnant rats. The assessment of the phagocytic function of the reticuloendothelial system was by the uptake of sulphur colloid labeled with Tc99m by the reticuloendothelial system organs as well as to assess the permanence of the radio isotope in blood clots. The weights and radioactive levels of the samples were measured. Histologic analyses of these organs were performed as well. The results were compared using the Student t-test, with significance at p<0.05. The scintigraphic values were higher in the liver followed by spleen and lung. The blood clot presented with only a low amount of radiation. The pregnant rats registered lower radiation levels in the liver and higher in the lung when compared with the control group. The histo-architecture of the studied organs did not show any alterations. Pregnancy reduces the phagocytic function of the liver but increases the role of the reticuloendothelial system function of the lung.
