Shahrin Hisham Amirnordin; Suzairin Seri; Wan Saiful-islam; Wan Saiful-Islam Wan Salim; Hamimah Abd Rahman; Khalid Hasnan

Stringent emission regulations around the world necessitate the use of high-efficiency catalytic converters in vehicle exhaust systems. Therefore, determining the optimum geometry of the honeycomb monolith structure is necessary. This structure requires a high surface area for treating gases while maintaining a low pressure drop in the engine. In the present paper, an adapted sub-grid scale modeling is used to predict the pressure loss of square- and hexagonal-cell-shaped honeycomb monoliths. This sub-grid scale modeling represents the actual variations in the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet for various combinations of wall thickness and cell density. A comparison is made between the experimental and numerical results established in literature. The present approach is found to provide better and more comprehensive results than the single channel technique.

Value stream mapping (VSM) significantly monitored by integrating radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor network (WSN), ZigBee wireless technologies and Labview Graphical user interface (GUI). These technologies are used for identifying, sensing, positioning, multi-hop communication and real time locating system (RTLS). Combined effect of above technologies will optimize labor and operations cost, minimize human error; improve environmental performance and information accuracy. ZigBee protocol IEEE 802.15.4 standard has been used as wireless network in variety of commercial and industrial applications. The range of tracking of RFID reader enhanced with ZigBee coordinator through ZigBee router, which overcomes the range of radio areas that do not reach signals from the RFID reader. The proposed system provides richer information of objects location, identification and their environmental status like temperature and moisture.

Correlation between RFID network planning (RNP) parameters and particle swarm optimization (PSO) solutions

Azli Nawawi; Khalid Hasnan; Salleh Ahmad Bareduan

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is often used for solving RFID Network Planning (RNP) problems. However, the direct correlation between RNP parameters (coordinates and power settings of RFID readers) and PSO solutions is rarely shown. This is due to the fact that most researches done in this field focus more on the development of new variants of PSO and the optimization result. For that reason, this paper tends to investigate the correlation between RNP parameters and PSO solutions. One of RNP objectives (Optimal Tag Coverage) is taken as an example. The formula of optimal tag coverage is elaborated in order to expose the allocation of RNP parameters in the formula. In addition, a representation system for embedding RNP parameters in PSO solution is explained. This paper can also serves as an early guideline for solving RNP problems using PSO algorithm.

This paper presents design and control architecture of a small mobile robot with hybrid locomotion system. It consist the combination of wheel and track type motion system resulting as a hybrid mechanism. The wheel locomotion system helps the robot to move on flat surface or path platform with high velocity, high manoeuvrability at low energy consumption. The track system is designed for rough and unstructured path, where robot need to cross irregular surface with high stability. This system works on interchangeable locomotion phenomena by means of track tensioner unit (TTU). The TTU helps the loading and unloading of track system by means of rack and pinion mechanism. This design of small hybrid mobile robot is improves robot applications and also enhance its flexibilty, verstality to work in multi type of terrains.

Khalid Hasnan; Qadir Bakhsh; Badrul Aisham; Aftab Ahmed

The designer should be familiar with the acceptable dimensions and material for model, which fulfils its performance requirements under stress and deformation. In this paper the design and failure analysis of track tensioner unit (TTU) of hybrid locomotion mobile robot is presented. The TTU is a module that helps the locomotion system transformability while robot moves on wheel or track mechanism. It is made of Aluminium alloy Al6061-T6 and was analyzed for its mechanical behaviour that subjected under different load conditions. The failure analysis gave the results about the material behaviour under loading condition that helps the selection of suitable one for design. The simulation result shows that the model material fails or deform permanently under 1000N load.

Impact of RFID and Xbee Communication Network on Supply Chain Management

Aftab Ahmed; Khalid Hasnan; Badrul Aisham; Qadir Bakhsh

Every industry, organization or individual needs to be minimize their expenditure, time and fatigue and maximize their profit in supply chain. These goals can be achieved through automation by using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Zigbee wireless communication technologies, which is easily available in the market. Basically RFID technology is used for automatically tracking, locating or identifying the entities. It can easily integrate with low cost low power consumption Xbee (Zigbee) device, which is used to increase the communication range by large number of node deployment. RFID-Xbee network integrates with Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) Graphical User Interface (GUI), which gives real time information of supply chain at single control panel. The integrated communication model proves the near field inductive coupling and can be used in supermarket for item pricing, office automation, security system, and car parking. This system confirms the concept of real-time locating system (RTLS) in an indoor environment. The impact of RFID and Xbee network communication model enhance the read range of RFID reader, so that out of range items can be tracked easily without additional RFID readers. The benefit of this system is to maximize profit, reduce human intervention and minimize waste.
