Standardization is an important part of successful building and construction today. The ISO/TR 11219:2012. Information and Documentation. Qualitative Conditions and Basic Statistics for Library Buildings; Space, Function and Design is a standardization document for librarians, architects and other professionals involved in library planning and construction. It provides guidelines and normative references as well as facts and figures concerning all parts of a library building. This chapter is a rereading of the Technical Report from a sustainability point of view. Sustainability as defined here is not a simple buzzword associated with environmental protection and resource efficiency, but a complex concept concerning socially, economically and ecologically responsible action. It becomes obvious that the Technical Report provides many standards and guidelines connected to the sustainability issue along these lines. Qualitative Conditions and Basic Statistics for Library Buildings; Space, Function and Design ist ein Fachbericht für Bibliothekare, Architekten und andere beteiligte Fachleute im Bibliotheksbau. Er enthält Richtlinien und normative Referenzen sowie Kennzahlen und Daten für sämtliche Bereiche eines Bibliotheksbaus. Dieses Kapitel ist ein Wieder-Lesen des Technical Report unter dem Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit. Im hier beschriebenen Sinne ist Nachhaltigkeit nicht nur ein einfaches Modewort, das mit Umweltschutz und Ressourcenschonung assoziiert wird, sondern ein komplexes Konzept, das soziale, ökonomische und ökologische Verantwortung in konkretes Handeln umsetzt. Es wird deutlich, dass der Technical Report viele Standards und Richtlinien bietet, die mit Nachhaltigkeit in diesem Sinne verbunden sind.

Neubau des Library & Learning Center (LC) an der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien

Zusammenfassung Der Neubau des Library & Learning Centers der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien wurde am 7. November 2013 offiziell eröffnet. Beschrieben werden die Grundstruktur sowie die wesentlichen baulichen und funktionalen Merkmale dieses architektonisch ungewöhnlichen Gebäudes. Abstract The new building of the Library & Learning Center of the University of Economics in Vienna was opened on November 7 2013. Described are the basic structure as well as the important constructional and functional attributes of this architectural unusual building.

The second hand library building: Sustainable thinking through recycling old buildings into new libraries

Old buildings are being recycled into libraries all over the world. The process of rededication of a building with a former different usage into a library is quite obviously a matter of recycling. The transformation of an existing building with a prior non-library function into a library brings the challenge and the opportunity for sustainable thinking in library planning. As non-renewable resources are decreasing, reusing and recycling are going to become increasingly necessary in the future. The recycling of old buildings means reducing the ecological footprint of library buildings in a cost-effective and efficient way. Beside ‘green’ aspects like water conservation, energy conservation, recycled or sustainable building materials, indoor air quality, and solar power from photo-voltaic panels, the planning of an adaptive reuse is a very different task than the planning of a library in a totally new building. Some best practice case studies from Germany, and other countries in Europe are presented.

Die neue Fachbibliothek Medizin der Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf in der O.A.S.E.

Mit der Ende 2011 eröffneten neuen Fachbibliothek Medizin in der sogenannten O.A.S.E. setzt die Medizinische Fakultät der Heinrich-Heine-Universität zusammen mit der Universitätsund Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf baulich ein neues Lehrund Lernkonzept um. Die Grenzen zwischen Bibliothek und anderen Service-Einrichtungen an diesem „Ort des Austausches, des Studiums und der Entwicklung“ werden fließend. Inspiriert von Learning Grids und Library and Learning Centers wird Bibliothek hier als innovativer Lernund Kommunikationsort verstanden. Der Darstellung von Konzept und Realisierung folgt ein kritischer Rundgang, der die O.A.S.E. am ambitionierten Anspruch des modernen Lernorts zu messen versucht. Abstract

Die Philologische Bibliothek der Freien Universität Berlin

Bislang mussten Studierende und Wissenschaftler der philologischen Fächer der Freien Universität Berlin eine Vielzahl von räumlich weit verstreuten kleineren und größeren Instituts- und Seminarbibliotheken aufsuchen - Bibliotheken mit unterschiedlichen, teils sehr knapp bemessenen Öffnungszeiten, verschiedenen lokalen Aufstellungssystematiken und unterschiedlichsten Nutzungsbedingungen. In Zeiten interdisziplinären Arbeitens bei immer geringer werdenden Erwerbungsetats und vor dem Hintergrund der neuen Bibliotheksstruktur der Freien Universität mit einer „Konzentration auf mittlerer Ebene“ ist die Idee einer gemeinsamen Bibliothek nahe liegend. Im Rahmen der räumlichen Konzentration eines Großteils der philologischen Institute in einem Gebäudekomplex entstand das Konzept für den Neubau einer gemeinsamen Philologischen Bibliothek.
