AbstractThe World Wide Web plays an important role in getting medical information. Internet services are used by two different groups, i.e.,by professionals as well as by nonprofessionals. Therefore, the problem to be solved by health information suppliers is to satisfy the needs of both target groups. In the future, the usefulness of health information on the web (defined by various quality criteria) will possibly determine its cost.

Forschungsstrategien an Fachhochschulen am Beispiel der Fachhochschule Köln

Ursula Georgy

Ursula Georgy; Ute Krauss-Leichert

The foremost goal of the Bologna Declaration 1999 was to establish a common formal structure for higher education in Europe. Its most important features included the introduction of the Bachelors and Masters degrees as a two-step system in order to achieve International comparability, to facilitate study semesters abroad, and to shorten the overall length of academic study. For the most part, the formal implementation process has been completed in Germany. But in reality employers in the civil service sector have not yet adopted these measures.

Qualifizierungswege in der E U : Ein Überblick

Ursula Georgy

One of the main objectives of the Bologna declaration is to increase the mobility of students at European institutions of higher education. Mobility throughout Europe is only possible if there Is mutual recognition of degrees earned. This will be facilitated through an increasing transparency of educational systems. This paper outlines the current situation within the LIS field in synoptic form.

The Theory of Attention and the Economy of Understanding as a New Price Model in the Information Economy

Ursula Georgy

Most prices in the information economy (scientific information) are based on length of information, duration of online time, actuality etc., but most of these price concepts give little satisfaction to the customer because they are irrational and not comprehensible. Till today there exist no price concepts in the information economy concidering the attention or understanding of information. Therefore the theory of Georg Franck (1999, 2002) will be an interesting attempt for new price models. People nowadays stay in confrontation with a maximum number of information per day and recognise only the most attractive and readily comprehensible information. Advertising agencies are measuring the attention drawn by a particular medium like television. The private TV as a leading mass medium finances itself by selling the service of catching attention. These are systems of channels supplying information in order to gather attention in return and determine the financial success. It should be the goal of every author (scientist) to gather attention by the scientific community. Every scientist and author should formulate his publication attractive to receive a maximum of attention and understanding because these two points will be rewarded directly with scientific success (Science Citation Index). But how much would the consumer (scientist) pay for understanding and attention? Till today no host or supplier of information uses this model. But for example Google uses the theory of attention in its ranking (frequency of linking) and word advertising (most-searched words) indirectly and this possibly would be a step to new price concepts.

Der Weg zur Originalliteratur

Hedda Schulz; Ursula Georgy

The Information System of the Chemical Abstracts Service

Hedda Schulz; Ursula Georgy

The history of Chemical Abstracts is an important part of documentation and information management in chemistry. In the field of chemistry, it was realized in the very early days — in comparison with other sciences — how important the summaries and overviews of research results are for maintaining access to existing knowledge now and in the future. Therefore, in addition to the primary literature, i.e. the original publications which reflect the state of research in journals and monographs, the secondary literature came into being, i.e. reference journals and handbooks, which include the summarized presentation of the original publications.

Locating the Source Document

Hedda Schulz; Ursula Georgy

The abstract texts in Chemical Abstracts are not intended as substitutes for the contents of the original document. They should, however, furnish the reader with enough information to enable him to decide whether intensive study of the original document is worthwhile and if the costs for ordering or even translation are rewarding. There are many ways to obtain the original literature which is held at the disposal of central libraries in many countries for loan or for photocopying. Printed files and online databases make it possible for the user to identify the respective library.
