Effects of SiO2 on Surface Smoothness and Densification of Alumina

Seiichi Yamada; Nobuo Kamehara; Kyohei Murakawa

The surface smoothness and densification of the alumina containing 0.01–0.1 wt% SiO2 additive have been studies. The densification and grain growth are inhibited by SiO2. The activation energy for sintering increases and the surface smoothness decreases with increasing SiO2 content. The decreasing of the surface smoothness with SiO2 occurs in initial sintering. The reduction of the surface smoothness is enhanced by the grain growth.
