To promote the growth and development of premature infants, effective and tender care is required in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The purpose of this study was to test the potential effects of massage therapy on increasing physical growth and promoting gastrointestinal function in premature infants. Twenty subjects were divided into two groups in the NICU of one general hospital located in South Korea. The experimental group (n = 10) were given massage therapy and the control group (n = 10) received routine care. Massage therapy was performed twice daily for 14 days, for 15 minutes per session. In the physical growth, height and chest circumference were significantly increased in the experimental group. In assessing gastrointestinal function, frequency of pre-feed gastric residual was significantly decreased and numbers of bowel movements were significantly increased in the experimental group. This study showed massage therapy has the potential effects on increasing physical growth and gastrointestinal function in premature infants. The massage in the NICU might be utilized as a part of developmental care, but more research needs to be done. NICU nurses need to be trained in massage therapy techniques to provide more effective clinical care for premature infants.

Although many reports have been published regarding the pharmacological effects of ginseng, little is known about the biochemical pathways operant in ginsenoside biosynthesis, or the genes involved therein. Proteomics analysis is an approach to elucidate the physiological characteristics and biosynthetic pathways of ginsenosides, main components of ginseng. In this review, we introduced the recent progress in proteomics studies of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer). We briefly reference the genomic analyses of P. ginseng, without which proteomics approaches would have been impossible. Functional genomics studies regarding secondary metabolism in P. ginseng are also introduced here, in order to introduce possible future prospects for further study.

SiNae Park; Shin-Jeong Kim; Myungnam Lee; Kyung-Ah Kang; Evan Hendrix

This study analyzed the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and evaluated the factors associated with MetS. Subjects numbered 2,213 adults who participated in the health screening survey. Results show that the prevalence of MetS, Risk-MetS, and Non-MetS was 28.2%, 44.9%, and 26.9% respectively. Factors influencing variables were age, gender, history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, abdominal obesity, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, alcohol consumption, and level of physical activity. Community health nurses should plan to develop MetS management programs that target Mets or Risk-MetS groups to promote health.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of a life respect instrument for elementary school students. Method: The study was conducted as follows: identification of the tentative content domains, items generation, test of content validity, and data collecting with a preliminary questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Cronbach`s alpha, Guttman split-half, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results: Two factors were extracted through factor analysis: `Value about life respect`, and `Attitude about life respect.` These factors explained 58.82% of all factors. A total of 16 items belonging to 2 domains were generated. Cronbach`s alpha and Guttman split-half coefficient were .82, and .84 respectively. Conclusion: The life respect instrument modified in this study will be useful for evaluating the effect of life respect education for elementary school students.

Kyung-Ah Kang; Shin-Jeong Kim; Mi-Kyung Song

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a finding meaning in life CD program about life-esteemed education and to identify the effect of the program. Methods: The life-esteemed education philosophy and the concepts of logotherapy were applied as a theoretical framework for this program. This program was developed through the process of planning, designing, developing, and evaluating with a content validity test. To identify the effect of the program, one experimental group design was applied to 54 students. Data were collected before the program started and one week and five weeks after the program finished. Results: The program was developed based on the students` needs and evaluation of the CD`s content and consists of five periods: Dinosaur Park of Promise, Hill of Fragrance, Garden of Love, Forest of Acceptance, and My Lake. Each post-test score of knowledge, attitude, and practice on meaning of life was significantly higher than pretest scores. Conclusion: This program can be effective for life-esteemed education in elementary school students. Moreover, it is encouraged that the program will be utilized in more life-esteemed education for elementary school students.

This study determines the effect of simulation with team-based learning (TBL) on newborn nursing care. This randomized controlled trial included 74 nursing students from one university located in Seoul, South Korea. Participants were categorized into two groups according to educational modality: one group involved both simulation and TBL, and the other involved simulation alone. Learning attitudes, academic achievement, and simulation performance were examined to assess effectiveness. The mean difference in learning attitudes between the two groups was non-significant. Low academic achievement differed significantly between the two groups (t = 3.445, P = 0.002). There was no significant difference in mean scores for simulation performance between the two groups. In this study, simulation with TBL was effective in improving learning outcomes. In current nursing education, various learning methods are employed within complex nursing situations and require flexibility and problem-solving approaches.

Shin-Jeong Kim; So-Ra Kang; Seung-Hee Lee; Kyung-Ah Kang

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of coping knowledge for emergency preparedness in Korean elementary school students. A school-based coping education program was provided seven times to 271 fourth- and fifth-grade students in two urban schools by researchers with the school nurses. The Process Model of Stress and Coping and Self-Care Deficit Theory were the theoretical frameworks used to guide this research. The Coping Knowledge for Emergency Situations Questionnaire, developed by the authors, was used to gather data. In the coping education group, there was statistically significant improvement in the coping knowledge (t = 4.589, p < .001) from that of the control group (n = 270). The results highlight the importance of emergency preparedness for elementary school students and the need to develop educational programs for various emergency situations.

Effects of the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education (C-SAPE) Program on South Korean Fifth-Grade Students' Competence in Terms of Knowledge and Self-Protective Behaviors.

Shin-Jeong Kim; Kyung-Ah Kang

Child sexual abuse (CSA) threatens children’s safety and even their lives. CSA is increasing steadily, despite the government’s efforts to decrease and prevent its incidence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education (C-SAPE) program on fifth-grade elementary school students’ competence in terms of their knowledge and self-protective behaviors. Participants included 39 children who completed the C-SAPE program and a control group of 50 children. A nonequivalent control group pre-/posttest design was used to examine the effectiveness of C-SAPE. Significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups’ mean difference (post–pre) in competence scores (t = 3.354, p = .001), especially in the category of self-protective behaviors (t = 2.641, p = .010). The C-SAPE program may be effective in increasing elementary school students’ self-protective behaviors related to sexual abuse.
