Aromatic Plants of Mali (IV): Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf and C. giganteus (Hochst.) Chiov.

Abstract The composition of the essential oils of Cymbopogon citratus and C. giganteus from Mali and the Ivory Coast were determined by GC and GC/MS, and they were found to contain 19 and 27 constituents, respectively. C. citratus oil from Mali contained a high proportion of citral (approx. 75%) (geranial/neral ca 2/1), some myrcene (6.2–9.1%) and geraniol (3.0–5.6%). It differed from the oil of the Ivory Coast in which the contents of geranial, neral and myrcene each ranged between 18–35%. C. giganteus oil was characterized by high proportions of cis- and trans-p-mentha-l(7),8-dien-2-ols (approx. 50%) and p-mentha-2,8-dien-l-ols (approx. 25%) together with isopiperitenol-carveol (approx. 10%) and traces of carvone (<5%).

Aromatic Plants of Mali (I): Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Ocimum basilicum L.

Abstract In a study of the chemical composition of oil from 24 samples of fresh or dried Ocimum basilicum we identified 53 components. All the oils were of the linalool chemotype, but four subtypes could be identified, unlinked to harvest location: oils containing 60–70% linalool and principally eugenol (5–15%), and oils with less than 60% linalool containing much eugenol, methyl eugenol or methyl chavicol. The often high proportions of these components (20–30%) distinguish these oils from others described previously.

Aromatic Plants of Mali (III): Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Two Hyptis Species: H. suaveolens (L.) Poit. and H. spicigera Lam.

Abstract The oils of Hyptis suaveolens and H. spicigera have been analyzed by GC and GC/M S. The chemical composition of the differents batches analyzed for each species varied little with different harvest years or with the condition of the steam distilled plant material. H. suaveolens oil was composed mainly of sabinene (31–38%), with also β-caryophyllene and rrans-alpha-bergamotene. H. spicigera oil contained much β-caryophyllene (23–28%), α-pinene (6.0–14.0%) and β-pinene (6.7–13.4%) as major constituents.

Aromatic Plants of Mali (V): Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Four Eucalyptus Species Implanted in Mali: Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. citriodora, E. torelliana and E. tereticornis

Abstract The essential oils of four representative varieties of eucalyptus implanted and exploited in Mali were studied. In the oil from Eucalyptus camaldulensis 43 constituents were identified, of which limonene (4.1-10.2%), 1,8-cineole (42.6-64.1%), γ-terpinene (4.8-6.2%), p-cymene (11.6-24.8%), trans-pinocarveol (1.4-4.0%) and α-terpineol (3.7-4.8%) were the most representative. In E. citriodora, of the 18 constituents identified citronnellal and isopulegol were the most abundant (approx. 78% and 6%, respectively). In the oils of E. tereticornis and E. torelliana in which 33 and 31 components were respectively identified, α-pinene (15.6-17.2%), limonene (4.4-6.2%) and 1,8-cineole (58.7-62.0%) predominated in the first, and α-pinene (50.0-52.1%) in the second.

Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil of Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A.ch. from Mali

Abstract We analyzed the essential oil of Xylopia aethiopica from dried fruit and the powder obtained from crushed dried fruit using combined GC and GC/MS. The principal constituents identified in the fruit oil were β-pinene (19.1%), γ-terpinene (14.7%), trans-pinocarveol (8.6%) and p-cymene (7.3%). In the oil from the powder die major constituents were β-pinene (9.9%), α-cadinol (6.9%), trans-pinocarveol (4.6%), α-pinene (4.1%) and 1,8-cineole (4.0%).

Aromatic Plants of Mali (II): Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Ocimum canum Sims

Abstract Sixteen samples of Ocimum canumoil were isolated from fresh and dried plant material by steam distillation. Fifty-three components were identified. Two new chemotypes were found; one rich in α-terpineol (48-64%), the other in methyl chavicol-α-terpineol (44-52% and 20-27%). Hitherto, α-terpineol had only been reported in trace amounts in O. canum oil.

Essential Oil of Abies alba Mill., Pinaceae, from the Pilot Production in Montenegro

Abstract The analyses were performed on the commercial essential oil of Abies alba obtained from fresh green summits of young branches by steam distillation. The plant material was collected from the teritory of Montenegro. The composition of the oil was determined by GC and GC/MS. The main constituents were β-pinene (32.8%), α-pinene (17.3%), camphene (16.7%), bornyl acetate (9.0%), limonene (6.1%) and β-phellandrene (4.9%).

Aromatic plants of Mali (VI): Chemical composition of essential oil of Vepris heterophylla (Engl.).

Abstract Commercial samples of Vepris heterophylla of different ages but same origin yielded limpid oils that had a strong blue color when extracted from older plants. Their chemical compositions varied markedly with sample type. The freshest plants yielded oils with closely similar percentages (3–12%) of sabinene, δ-cadinene, β-elemene, β-caryophyllene, germacrene-D-4-ol and α-cadinol. The oils from plants long harvested contained high levels of sabinene (25–29%), the other constituents being present in trace amounts or a few percent. Among them were geigerene and pregeigerene. No chamazulene nor any of its derivatives were detected in any oil
