Multidrug resistance (MDR) was described initially for tumor cells which become resistant not only to the specific drug to which they are submitted, but also to a large range of unrelated drugs. The expression of mdr genes, responsible for the phenotype, and their product P glycoprotein (Pgp), is currently under intensive study due to their ample distribution in different organisms and their possible physiological roles which include protection against xenobiotics. In mice, three mdr isoforms expressed in some normal tissues are known. In this work, we analyzed by RT-PCR the expression of mdr1, mdr2 and mdr3 in several organs of BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice during ontogeny. A considerable variation in mdr expression among individuals of the same strain, as well as among different organs in individuals of the same age group and among different age groups, was detected. We also observed a strong tendency for the expression of a greater number of active isoforms in old mice. The large expression range of the mdr isoforms point to an important role as a natural defense system.

The multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype is associated with the expression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), coded by the multigenic mdr family. Mice present the isoforms mdr1 and mdr3, which are responsible for multidrug resistance, and mdr2, that is involved in the transport of phospholipids. mdr1 expression has more recently been associated also with the secretion of steroid hormones. This work presents an RT-PCR analysis of the expression of mdr isoforms, in several organs of mice during different phases of the estrous cycle. Additionally, females were ovariectomized, submitted to different hormone treatments, and their uterus was analyzed for the expression of mdr isoforms. The results show that in the adrenal gland and ovaries mdr1 is the main isoform during proestrus, and that progesterone or a combination of progesterone and estrogen induce the expression of all mdr isoforms in the uterus of ovariectomized females. We suggest that the functions of mdr1 and mdr3 are overlapping, that mdr3 may be the more efficient isoform in the detoxification function, and that mdr1 may be more closely related to the secretion of steroid hormones.

FAZER O DESCONHECIDO SER DESCOBERTO NOVOS TALENTOS DA REDE PÚBLICA (RNEC/NT)

Lavínia Schwantes; Paula Corrêa Henning; Paula Regina Costa Ribeiro

The modern discourse of science is still established as the episteme of our times. It is present in many research and extension projects like the one of the Education and Science National Network, linking many universities across the country. In this study, we sought analyzing the science discourse of southern groups from the Network. Weused some foucaultian tools of discourse analysis to investigate the interviews with researchers and observers of these groups. We noticed that many respondents link their speeches to the modern aspect of science due to different contexts. However, some cracks and flexibilizations have been happening in the discourses of some groups, producing a loosening of the recurrent discourse of science.
