The present study reports the attack of the Eucalyptus gall wasp Leptocybe invasa Fisher & LaSalle, 2004 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The immature stages of L. invasa induce the growth of galls that can lead to defoliation of eucalyptus trees.

This research aimed to record the damage caused by Eucalyptus-defoliating caterpillars located in Rio Grande do Sul States, Brazil. The specie was determined as Nystalea nyseus (CRAMER, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae). The caterpillars of this species cause defoliation in Eucalyptus trees. This is the first record of Nystalea nyseus from Eucalyptus plantation in the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

COMPARAÇÃO DAS CARACTERÍSTICAS BIOTÉCNICAS DE Sebastiania schottiana (Müll. Arg.) Müll. Arg., Phyllanthus sellowianus (Klotzscg) Müll. Arg., Salix humboldtiana Willd., E Salix x rubens Shrank

This study aims at making a comparative study of the biotechnical characteristics of Sebastiania schottiana (Mull. Arg.) Mull. Arg., Phyllanthus sellowianus (Klotzscg) Mull. Arg., Salix humboldtiana Willd., and Salix x rubens Shrank. These species have, in previous studies, shown promising potentialities for slope stabilization and restoration of riverbanks. The experiment was installed in the banks of a creek in 2008, in Sao Joao do Polesine, in Rio Grande do Sul state. The variables analyzed were: survival rate in the field (%), number, diameter, length, and the sum of primary shoots, length of the longest primary bud, number and length of the secondary shoots and the sum of the length of the secondary shoots. Among the analyzed species, Phyllanthus sellowianus showed the best results for the five characteristics evaluated, suggesting that it is the most suitable species for the stabilization and the recovery of riverbanks in this region, among the studied species.

ALTURA DE VOO DE ESCOLITÍNEOS (COLEOPTERA, SCOLYTINAE) EM POVOAMENTO DE Pinus taeda L. NO SUL DO BRASIL

Leonardo Mortari Machado; Ervandil Corrêa Costa

Scolytids (Curculionidae, Scolytinae) are small borer beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera that develop within or under the bark of trees. In northern countries, these insects cause significant damage especially when outbreaks occur. In Brazil, in general, the damage is minor when compared to the northern hemisphere. Given the importance of subfamily Scolytinae, this paper aims at providing a better understanding of the behavior of Scolytids, mainly regarding the flight height in a stand of Pinus taeda L. For the execution of this work 72, intercept flight traps were installed in area belonging to the State Foundation for Agricultural Research (FEPAGRO), located in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state. The treatments correspond to heights of 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; 4.5; 5.0; 5.5 and 6.0 meters. It was possible to capture: Hypothenemus eruditus in greater abundance at the range of 1 to 1.5 meters; Xyleborus ferrugineus , Xyleborinus gracilis and Xyleborus affinis to 0.5 meters; Xyleborinus saxeseni and Xylosandrus retusus with no preference. It is concluded that the range between 0.5 and 1.5 meters is ideal to analyze quantitatively the scolytids present in the Pinus taeda .

Thomas Schröder; Rudiney Soares Pereira; Anna Paula Lora Zimmermann; Cristina Gouvea Redin; Marciane Danniela Fleck; Leonardo Mortari Machado; Nájila Souza Rocha
