Essential oils of many plants have been previously tested in the treatment of oral diseases and other infections. This study was a randomized, double-blind, in parallel with an active control study, which aimed to evaluate the efficacy of three formulations of the Lippia sidoides Cham. essential oil (LSO) in the reduction of salivary Streptococcus mutans in children with caries. 81 volunteers, aged 6-12 years, both genders, with caries, were recruited to participate in this study, and randomly assigned to either one of five different groups. Each group received topical treatment with either 1.4% LSO toothpaste, 1.4% LSO gel, 0.8% LSO mouthwash, 1% chlorhexidine gel, or 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash. A 5-ml volume of each gel was placed inside disposable trays, and applied for 1 min, every 24h, for 5 consecutive days. The mouthwash groups used 5-ml volume of a mouthwash inside disposable syringes. In the toothpaste group, children brushed their teeth for 1 min, once a day for 5 days. Saliva was collected before and after treatment. MS colonies were counted, isolated and confirmed through biochemical tests. Differences in MS levels measured in different days within the same treatment group was only verified with LSO toothpaste, chlorhexidine gel and chlorhexidine mouthwash. Comparison between groups of LSO mouthwash, toothpaste and gel showed that the toothpaste group expressed significantly lower MS levels than the mouthwash and gel groups at day-30. Chlorhexidine significantly reduced MS levels after 5 days of treatment, but these levels returned to baseline in other periods of the study. LSO toothpaste reduced MS levels after 5 days of treatment, and MS levels remained low and did not return to baseline during subsequent analysis. Hence, LSO toothpaste demonstrated the most long-lasting MS reduction in saliva, whereas other LSO formulations did not effectively reduce MS levels in children with dental caries.

BACKGROUND Propolis is a resinous complex produced by Apis mellifera L. bees whose variety of pharmacological properties results from the complexity of its composition. In dentistry, propolis is used on the prevention of oral diseases such as dental caries and gingivitis. Prospective studies in intellectual property banks are important to increase market competitiveness and thus generate new products in the various research areas. In this way, investments in patents play an important role in the technological and economic development of a country. OBJECTIVE To evaluate patents with dental products containing propolis, on intellectual property banks. METHOD The research was conducted in 10 banks of intellectual property, including since the first deposits up to 2016. Relevant information that describes the invention in the patent document were collected, processed and described. RESULTS The search performed in 62 patents using propolis in the dental topic. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has the largest number of filing patents (83.60%) and the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in third place with 4 patents (6.55%). Built-in dental cream with propolis was the most patented product. The first patent date of 1998, followed by an increase in the number of deposits in the last 20 years. Most of the patents are A61K code (51) for medical, dental or hygienic purposes. CONCLUSION This study has shown that propolis is a promising bioactive component in dental products, especially for use in Cariology and Periodontology. Although there has been a significant progress in applications of propolis, the field of dental products is still a growing area and it is important to encourage innovation and development of new products incorporating propolis based on knowledge of its composition and therapeutic properties.

The evaluation of the drugs consumption is an important tool to ensure access and evaluate their rational use. Although studies indicate the relationship between the increasing resistance of microorganisms and the irrational use of medicines, few Pharmacoepidemiology data and profile of these patients are available in dentistry. Objective: To evaluate the consumption of drugs used irrationally by patients seeking urgent care in dentistry in health units of primary care in the Aracati- CE city. Methodology: This is a descriptive study that evaluated data such as age, gender, chief complaint, medications previously used service without prescription and proposed treatment. Results: During the period study 176 patients sought urgent department health of the basic health units mainly due to toothache. Among them 140 (79.5%) were self-medicating, 65% were female and 35% male, mean age of 33 years old. Their discovery, in most cases, it is for the interpretation of the images in routine panoramic radiography. Aims: The research aimed to evaluate the prevalence of mucous cyst in maxillary sinus in radiology clinic at Ceara Federal University. Material and Methods: To this study conduction, were analyzed 1996 panoramic radiographs from a digital file obtained between April 2011 to April 2013 Results:. Aspects as gender, affected side and teeth absence next to the cyst in the respective quadrant were evaluated. It was observed in the sample the occurrence of 45 patients with suggested images of mucous cysts in maxillary sinus, making a prevalence of 2,25%. From them, 26 (57,8%)were female and 19 (42,2%) were male. 48 maxillary sinuswere affected with the wound, from which28 (58,3%) it was in the left side and 20 (41,7%) in the right site. Three patients presented the wound in both sides, what represents 6,7% of the affected patients. From those 48 Mucous retention cyst, 40 (83,3%) were not related to an edentulous area in ipsilateral quadrant and 8 (16,7%) were shown next to an edentulous area.
