Grounded on the social embeddedness approach, this article aims to analyze how entrepreneurs mobilize relationships to access resources in the set-up and evolution of new ventures. Based on the conceptualization of entrepreneurship as an evolutionary process, we developed a comparative case study of two high-technology firms that participated in incubators through face-to-face, in-depth interviews with the founders as well as with the actors that represented their main relationships during the existence of the firms. In terms of data analysis, we divided up the trajectories of the firms into three phases dubbed pre-incubation, incubation and graduation as well as categorized the resources accessed in each phase. Based on this, we found out that the entrepreneurs mobilized their main relationships to access simple and complex resources in the set-up phase. However, in the phase of evolution, the mobilization of these relationships was contingent on the degree of complexity of resources.

This article, the result of theoretical reflection and empirical research, analyses the phenomenon of the embeddedness of the entrepreneur and the impact of social networks on the creation and death of businesses, differentiating between those that survive and those that become extinct. Its empirical basis derives from research of a quantitative and comparative nature that was carried out in 2008-2009. To process the data, a special methodological proposal was developed, with indicators that measure some of the components of embeddedness and their impact on the business world. The results suggest that there are differences between the two aspects researched and that social networks can have a positive influence on a company’s possibilities for survival in the market. This article contributes with innovation in the methodological field, as well as offering contributions at the theoretical level, thus helping to unveil some of the dimensions of the processes that lead to the creation and death of companies, with results of practical nature. This article, the result of theoretical reflection and empirical research, analyses the phenomenon of the embeddedness of the entrepreneur and the impact of social networks on the creation and death of businesses, differentiating between those that survive and those that become extinct.

This teaching case describes the foundation and expansion of Contem 1g, a Brazilian company in the personal hygiene, perfumes and cosmetics sector. Founded in 1984 as a textile company, it took an entirely new direction in 1994 when its owner rerouted the business and started to produce perfumes. Contem 1gs business history is marked by the launching new products and by the implementation of a hybrid sales system, namely: direct sales and franchise. His decision to expand the business is the starting point for our discussion and the skills to be explored as it seeks to consolidate its position in the international market. Contem 1gs teaching case can be used both to depict academic subjects dealing with the role of innovation in entrepreneurship or business growth as well as a classroom device to start discussion on business organization development process.

Based on the industrial network perspective and the distribution channel literature, this article deals with power and international post-acquisition changes that occurred in the relationships of the acquired firm with suppliers and buyers. Specifically, we investigate if and how the power variable affects international post-acquisition changes at the network level of the acquired firm. To do so, we developed a case study based on semi-structured interviews with a number of individuals from the acquirer, the acquired firm, suppliers and buyers. The main results point out that the acquisition triggered economic and non economic organizational practice changes at the supplier and buyer levels. Furthermore, they indicate that the acquirer used coercive and non coercive sources of power in order to introduce these changes. The use of these sources of power, in turn, was associated with the degree of dependence of suppliers and buyers in relation to the acquirer. Based on these results, we have developed a model with five new hypotheses that can be tested in future empirical studies.

Redes sociais, informação, criação e sobrevivência de empresas

Gláucia Maria Vasconcellos Vale; Liliane de Oliveira Guimarães

This article sheds light, on both theoretical and methodological grounds, on businesses creation and survival as well as the underlying influences of embeddedness and entrepreneurial social network in this process. The empirical foundations spring from a field research discerning, in the context of a universe of businesses cases, between those surviving ones and those short lived. Data treatment was enhanced by special indicators for embeddedeness and network information circulation. Results support the view that social networks influence the processes.

The non-economic dimension of changes prompted by cross-border acquisitions: a relational view

Sérgio Fernando Loureiro Rezende; Jeferson Vinhas Ferreira; Angela França Versiani; Liliane de Oliveira Guimarães

Building on the relational view of M&A suggested by the Industrial Network Approach, we looked at the non-economic dimension of post-acquisition changes in the relationships of the acquired firm. Based on a 2x2 matrix, this is illustrated by the relationships between the acquired firm with for-profit organizations through which non-economic resources are transacted (called Social) or with non-profit organizations with which it transacts either economic (called Partnership) or non-economic resources (called Community). We built a qualitative case study from the acquisition of the Brazilian firm Paraiso Group by the Swiss multinational Holcim, and focused on ten relationships of the acquired firm. We found that these relationships changed in terms of professionalism, degree of dependence and number of actors. An increase in professionalism is observed in all the relationships. This type and direction of change was considered the most important post-acquisition change. The degree of dependence and number of actors changes happened in specific segments of the acquired firms network, represented by the Community and Social relationships, respectively.
