Thirty-eight cases of canine leproid granuloma were diagnosed between 2000 and 2008. Diagnosis was based upon clinical and histopathological findings and the presence of acid-fast bacilli in skin sections. The clinical lesions were localized predominantly on the pinnae and included papules, plaques and nodules, with or without ulceration. Boxer dogs were the breed most affected. Histopathological findings included nodular to diffuse pyogranulomatous, lymphoplasmocytic inflammatory infiltrates, with or without necrosis, localized in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue. The bacillary loading and morphology were variable among the lesions analysed. There was no significant correlation between bacterial load and histopathological pattern, dominant type of inflammatory infiltration or the amount of necrosis or giant cells. No correlation was observed between giant cells and histopathological pattern. In the majority of cases where a PCR-based assay was done, a novel mycobacterium species as the main aetiological agent was identified, as reported in previous studies.

Pemphigus foliaceus is an uncommon autoimmune skin disorder affecting various species. A case of a 4-year-old mare of undefined breed, displaying alopecic areas, exsudation and crusty lesions on the face, breast region, and hindlimbs as well as pruritus, is reported. Laboratory exams for mite, bacteria and fungal structures were negative. Histopathological exam revealed an intra-epidermal pustule dermatitis with acantholysis, as well as superficial perisvascular dermatitis with infiltration of eosinophyles, conditions compatible with pemphigus foliaceus.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) is of worldwide concern in veterinary medicine. The identification of resistant strains is necessary for proper treatment and the prevention of its propagation among animals. This study aimed to identify S. pseudintermedius isolated from canine pyoderma and evaluate their resistance profiles. Lesions from 25 dogs with pyoderma were sampled. Bacterial isolates were subjected to phenotypic and genotypic analysis for identification of the causative agent. S. pseudintermedius isolates were subjected to SmaI macrorestriction analysis and PFGE for genetic grouping, and PCR to identify the presence of the mecA gene. Their resistance profiles against 12 antimicrobials were also assessed. According to the microbiological analysis, 70 of the 75 isolates obtained were S. pseudintermedius. The isolates presented PFGE patterns, with similarity varying between 84.6 and 100%, and were grouped into 19 clusters. Despite a high frequency of mecA-positive isolates (66 out 70), only 12 presented resistances to oxacillin. Multi-resistance was identified in 29 isolates. The high frequency of MRSP isolated in this study highlights the relevance of identifying resistant strains to lead proper clinical treatment.

A dog with abdominal trauma had an urethrorectal fistula and secundary bilateral hidronephrosis and hydroureter, identified by urethrocistography and excretory urography. According to our researches, only two cases of traumatic urethrorectal fistula had been reported until now in veterinary medicine.

Necrose epidérmica metabólica em cães

Lissandro Gonçalves Conceição; Livia Maria Rosa Acha; Fabricia Hallack Loures; José do Carmo Lopes Moreira

Metabolic epidermal necrosis is a rare endocrine metabolic disease, characterized by dermatological signs which has clinical and pathological similarity with necrolytic migratory erythema in humans. The present report describes three cases of MEN in dogs affected with erythematous ulcerative crusting dermatitis associated with hepatopathy. The diagnosis was based on cutaneous histopathology. The prognosis is poor and the three dogs died despite the treatment.

Evaluation of dermal collagen stained with picrosirius red and examined under polarized light microscopy

Polyana Galvão Bernardes Coelho; Maria Verônica de Souza; Lissandro Gonçalves Conceição; Marlene Isabel Vargas Viloria; Sirley Adriana Ortiz Bedoya

The special picrosirius red staining highlights the natural birefringence of collagen fibers when exposed to polarized light. The results from birefringence allow to evaluate the organization of the collagen fibers in the tissues. The authors intend to elucidate all steps to obtain and capture images of histological sections stained with picrosirius red and evaluated under polarized light microscopy, as well as possible artefacts that may occur. The special picrosirius red staining highlights the natural birefringence of collagen fibers when exposed to polarized light. It is reported a case of canine leproid granuloma in a Boxer at South Fluminense region, in Rio de Janeiro State. Clinical signs included nodular ulcerated lesions, alopecia, and serosanguinous exudate with no complaint of pain or pruritus. The diagnosis was based on the cytopathological and histopathological examination, which revealed intense pyogranulomatous inflammation along with negative bacilli images or acid-fast bacilli, respectively. The treatment protocol was established with enrofloxacin 10 mg/kg once a day associated with doxycycline 10mg / kg once a day for 3 months with clinical cure without recurrence, and no side effects.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response to the implantation of synthetic hydroxyapatite 30% (HAP-91®) in different physical states as dermal filler. Eighteen New Zealand rabbits were used, distributed randomly into two equal groups and then divided into three groups according to the postoperative period at 8, 21 and 49 days. One mL of HAP-91®, fluid and viscous, was implanted in the subcutaneous tissue, 1 cm proximal to the cranial crest of the right scapula. The thickness of the skin was measured before and after implantation and for the following 15 days. Pain sensitivity assessment was conducted, assigning the following scores: 0 - when the animal allowed the touch of the implant area and expressed no signs of pain; 1 - when the animal allowed the touch, but pain reaction occurred, like increase of the respiratory rate or attempt to escape; 2 - when the animal did not allow the touch to the implanted area. At 8, 21 and 49 days, biopsy of the implanted area was performed. No difference was observed between the thickness of the skin (p>0.05) and all animals received a score 0 for soreness. Histological analysis did not reveal any obvious inflammatory process, showing a predominance of mononuclear cells in samples of eight days and tissue organization around the biomaterial with a tendency to encapsulation. The results indicate that HAP-91®, both viscous and fluid, is biocompatible and suitable for dermal filling.
