This article proposes a dialogue between Hans-Georg Gadamer’s concept of Bildung, Ernst Boesch’s concept of culture as action field and Jaan Valsiner’s concept of culture as semiotic mediation for psychological processes, comparing their respective implications for the understanding of self-other relations. The focus on self-other relations touches on the issue of ‘self-culture engagement’, since the other is understood as an active interactor who at every moment transforms the possibilities and limits of a given sociocultural constellation into concrete reality. This debate is felt to be justified by the connecting thread of hermeneutics, methodologically viewed as essential by the three authors being studied (Gadamer, Boesch and Valsiner) for understanding culture-self relations. On the one hand, in each of these theoretical propositions both culture and individual are similarly conceived as constructors of meaning and constructed by one another. On the other hand, some aspects of this process of meaning construction and interpretation of constructed meaning are conceived differently by each of them, leading to some differentiation in the ‘hermeneutic task’ as a route for deepening the understanding of the ‘self-culture engagement’. From this perspective, a discussion on the propositions we can derive from their hermeneutic views with respect to the self-culture-other relations can be interesting.

The aim of this paper is to propose the notion of culture as a symbolic moving border. Departing from both, Boesch’s (1991) concept of culture as a symbolic field of action, and Herbst’s (1995) co-genetic logic, I will discuss the dynamics of self-other relationships in terms of their potentiality as sources of movement in culture. A brief analysis of an empirical material is given in illustrative character of the ideas here exposed.

This article focuses on the intersubjective process of meaning negotiation, through microgenetic analysis of Role-Playing Game sessions. We departed from the supposition that the analysis of I-other interactions, during that game, could put in evidence relevant aspects for the comprehension of the relation between intersubjectivity and otherness in interpersonal contexts. The results of the microgenetic analysis of the dialogues among the players showed the participation of important psychological processes in human development. In those processes, moments of tension and disquiet - typical of otherness relationships - were alternated with moments of convergence and sharing about the topics of the dialogue, as well as about the relational positions of the interlocutors.

The physiotherapist-patient relationship is usually characterized by moments of tension, yielded by the existence of their different subjective worlds. These worlds are constituted by the physiotherapist’s and patient’s different conceptions and values, included those concerning the mind-body relationship. In this paper we approach some questions related to the intersubjective tensions in this context, taking advantage of a case study. The analysis of the dialogue shows that the physiotherapist’s and the patient’s conflicting perspectives with respect to mind-body relation have implications for their professional and ordinary lives. It also shows that their quest for solving those conflicts brought, at some moments, new perspectives on the subject of the dialogues as well as on their ongoing relationship. We think that the interdisciplinary reflection and discussion of these aspects in the domains of psychology and physiotherapy can generate new perspectives for approaching the relationships involved in the respective professional contexts.

The historicity of psychological phenomena plays a key role in Vygotsky’s developmental theory. However, we rarely realize what historicity means to Vygotsky, and what implications the notions about the nature of historical change bring to his theory. We suggest, based on dialogue with authors from the social sciences, that Vygotsky worked with different notions of the nature of historical changes in each developmental plane (phylogenetic, ontogenetic, and historical-cultural). Our investigation on this topic showed that, for Vygotsky, each timescale studied behaved differently: for instance, teleological in civilizational scale, semi-open in ontogenetic time. Due to the great influence exerted by the author’s work on the fields of developmental and cultural psychology, we understand that this kind of investigation can be useful to clarify and enrich both scholarly knowledge about his works and contemporary claims about the role of historical change on the developmental processes in psychology.

In this article I address some more aspects regarding Boesch’s ontological predication aiming to clarify mistaken comprehensions as appeared in Perez-Campos” (2017) detailed work on my former paper about this issue (Simão 2016b). With this purpose, the following three aspects will be approached: the philosophical roots of my former proposal; the place of Boesch’s symbolic action theory in that proposal and the relevance of this discussion for the relationship between ontology and psychology.

ABSTRACT This article presents a discourse analysis of dialogues between communitarian mothers and their young children of the Wounaan-nonam indigenous community living in Puerto Pizario, at the San Juan River banks, near the Colombian Pacific Coast. The dialogues occurred in the context of an educational programme supported by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (HC-ICBF), which aims to re-signify cultural practices of the Wounaan-nonam as a scenario for the development of their young children. The focus is on the dialogical analysis of the dyadic interactions between communitarian mothers and their children about the “Madre Ñame” myth, which is the origin myth of the Wounaan-nonam people, showing how this educational proposal allows new generations to meet the traditional knowledge of their community. This analysis applies semiotic-cultural constructivism and is based on previous work about Wounaan-nonam myths.
