Qualidade de vida e trabalho voluntário em idosos

Luccas Melo de Souza; Liana Lautert

This cross-sectional, comparative study was performed with the objective to evaluate the quality of life of elderly individuals who perform volunteer work, compared to those who do not. The WHO Quality of Life questionnaire was applies in a group of 166 elderly individuals who performed volunteer work and to another 33 who did not. Results show most are women, single and with high-level education. Compared to No statistically significant difference was found between the groups for the quality of life scores in the physical and environmental domains (p>0.05). In the psychological and social relations domains, and in the global evaluation, it was observed that volunteers had higher scores (p<0.05). In the linear regression model, performing volunteer work appeared as a determinant for better quality of life in the psychological domain and global evaluation. It is suggested that volunteer work is a mechanism to promote quality of life among the elderly, and can be encouraged by health professionals. This cross-sectional, comparative study was performed with the objective to evaluate the quality of life of elderly individuals who perform volunteer work, compared to those who do not.

This cross-sectional and quantitative study was carried out with 88 traditionalist gauchos, who took part in the Farroupilha Camp in 2009. It verified their adherence to prostate cancer examination, also analyzing which variables influence in the adherence to digital rectal examination. Participants had an average age of 58.5 years, with high income and schooling level. Most (92%) lived longer in urban areas, had healthfollow-up at private health services (70.5%) and have had some preventive examination for prostate cancer (83%). The ones who had preventive examination had higher education, income and access to private health services. There was lower demand for preventive exams by those who lived most of their lives in the rural area. However, there was no relationship between the place where participants lived longer and adherence to digital rectalexamination. Findings indicate correspondence in the adherence to preventive examinations with other studies carried out in Brazil.

Luccas Melo de Souza; Maríndia Fernandes Ramos; Lisiani Celina da Silva Meirelles; Suzana Aparecida Oliveira Monteiro

OBJECTIVEnTo identify the adherence of health professionals of an intensive care unit to the five moments for hand hygiene.nnnMETHODnCross-sectional analytical study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data from a database of a hospital infection control service at an institution in southern Brazil. A total of 793 observations were analyzed from July to December 2012.nnnRESULTSnHand washing was not performed in 446 (56.2%) of the observations, and the adherence rate was 43.7%. The greatest adherence to hand hygiene was among the physiotherapists (53.5%) and the lowest adherence was among the nursing staff (29.2%). The indications with the lowest adherence rates to hand hygiene were before touching the patient (18.4%) and before aseptic procedure (20.9%).nnnCONCLUSIONnWe conclude that adherence to hand washing does not comply with the national and international guidelines, especially when we consider the current scenario of growing infections caused by multidrug-resistant microorganisms.

Nursing consultation to elderly people based on andragogy: a review article

Luccas Melo de Souza; Liana Lautert; Johannes Doll; Maria Cristina Sant'Anna da Silva

This is a review article which aims at presenting andragogy as the science that can orients the education of elderly people, in order to provide theoretical construct to grant nursing consultations to those individuals. For this, its concepts are approached and its assumptions are discussed, based in the six premises elaborated by Malcolm Knowles. This article starts from an extended vision of elderly, in which the mission of nurse/educator is to help them to develop their potential, considering their social atmosphere, their personal and collective experiences and their expectations. It is believed that nurses can use the andragogy theory, because it is perceived that it presents elements that can be added to the nursing consultation.
