Our aim was to discover the most important factors that influence the development of greener products in the mechanical industry, emphasising green design in product creation based on current environmental issues and considering product development as one important aspect of product life cycle management. This model is important to the mechanical industry because this sector relies heavily on raw materials, and recycling products is one way to improve environmental conditions. We used exploratory factor analyses to assess new product development, communication in change management, concurrent engineering, green products design worries and supplier involvement risks perception. The factor analyses initially found 10 constructs, but the 10th was eliminated because it had only one variable, and 5 were eliminated because they yielded Cronbach’s alpha values less than 0.6. To develop this model, we sent questionnaires to 2000 professionals in the Brazilian mechanical industry through LinkedIn discussion groups, mostly to professionals who participated in product development and was received 405 answered questionnaires which 394 was considered valid. The results show the importance of consistently managing product development throughout the entire product life cycle. This includes aspects such as product recycling, green products and using materials that are easy to recycle, from the very beginning of product design.

This conceptual article has as main aim described the project management as a factor to improve the sustainability of society. To do so, it is necessary to understand the project attributes and the changes in perspectives when adopting project management as a practice to promote sustainability. The discussion proposed here uses a heuristic method searching for patterns in the academic literature and in organizations to build arguments that can aid in the dissemination of project management practices. It is worthy to notice that it is not our intention here to deal with these issues in depth, but to encourage a discussion so that issues can be raised and solutions can emerge. Then, in addition to the question of sustainability in project management, we also added a discussion about the incorporation or greater stimulus to the use of project management practices in the public segment. There is a risk of being superficial in the discussion presents here, but the reason to integrated several contents is because it is not possible to describe a more sustainable society without addressing all segments.

Evolution toward environment sustainable behavior: search for survival in the plastic industry in Brazil

Luciano Ferreira da Silva; Arnoldo José de Hoyos Guevara; Ernesto D.R.S. Gonzalez; Paulo Sergio Gonçalves de Oliveira

The main aim of this article is to identify how the pressures from the external environment, in relation to the adoption of practices for sustainability in the environmental dimension, interfere with the organizational routines of companies involved in the plastic transformation chain. This research used a qualitative method because we sought to understand the meaning of managerial decisions regarding the routines that make up an organizational structure. For this purpose, secondary sources of evidence were used, which provided information on the history, infrastructure and products of 107 companies associated with the Brazilian Association of the Plastic Industry (Abiplast). In addition, six individuals directly linked to the plastics industry were also interviewed in order to obtain more evidence about the changes in the routines of this industry. For the analysis of the data, the constant comparison method was used based on the coding technique to identify patterns of behavior. The qualitative data were analyzed using the Atlas.ti version 7 software. The results demonstrate that the routines can be categorized as isomorphic or evolutionary, which is the main contribution of this research. In addition, the type of routine adopted may be associated with the company being reactive or proactive in relation to the pressures from the external environment. Furthermore, we can also say that the activities involved in the creation of new routines for environment sustainability are linked to three actions: building an infrastructure for sustainability, managing a circular flow of resources and innovation for sustainability.
