Folk medicine in the inner region of the Taurus Mountains in south Anatolia has been studied; 256 remedies prepared from 124 plant and 3 animal species are listed. Data include vernacular names, the parts used, the methods of preparation of the drugs and the medicinal use.

Abstract Undifferentiated callus tissues of Lithospermum erythrorhizon are capable of synthesizing shikonin derivatives, which are normally formed in the cork cells of the roots. Their biosynthesis in cultured cells is controlled by auxin and light. The pigment content increased linearly with time after a lag phase when callus tissues were grown on culture medium containing IAA in the dark, whereas it markedly decreased when 2,4-D was substituted for IAA or when cultures were irradiated with blue light.

The traditional utilization of plants as medicine in the Mediterranean region has been investigated. Field surveys were carried out among the people who live in the Taurus Mountains. Sixty-nine medicinal plants have been identified, which are listed with the vernacular names, the parts used, the methods of preparing the drugs and their traditional usages.

Traditional drugs used in the east Anatolia including Erzurum, Erzincan, Ağri, Kars, Iğdir, and Ardahan provinces have been surveyed. In this report, 169 remedies obtained from 87 plant species belonging to 38 families and 10 animal species are listed with their vernacular names, parts used, methods of preparing drugs, and traditional usages.ResumenDoğu Anadolu bölgesinde Erzurum, Erzincan, Ağri, Kars, Iğdir ve Ardahan illerinin sinirlari arasinda bulunan köylerde kullanilan halk ilaÇlan incelenmiŞtir. Abstract Some nutritional factors affecting the biosynthesis of shikonin derivatives in callus cultures of Lithospermum erythrorhizon were examined. High sucrose concentrations increased the content of shikonin derivatives, but neither glucose nor fructose was effective for shikonin derivative formation. High concentrations of nitrogen sources inhibited or retarded shikonin derivative formation and streptomycin sulphate stimulated their biosynthesis. Addition of ascorbic acid increased the content of shikonin derivatives. Among some precursors tested only l -phenylalanine had a positive effect. At high concentrations, Ca 2+ and Fe 2+ inhibited the biosynthesis of shikonin derivatives.

Abstract Different strains of callus cultures of Lithospermum erythrorhizon showed wide variations in the production of shikonin derivatives. From these cultures, two high pigment-producing strains, whose content of shikonin derivatives are stable and similar to that of intact plant root, have been established by repeated selection.

AbstractA field survey of traditional medicine in Turkey, specifically medicinal plants in East-Anatolia (Van-Bitlis Provinces), is discussed. Interviews with inhabitants, elder people, traditional practitioners and eyh (semi-religious persons) were conducted to determine the vernacular names of plants used as medicine. The plants were all taxonomically identified, and their medicinal uses and administration routes are listed. The use of medicinal plants is usually the first choice of treatment among the rural people in this region.
