The changing role of ports in supply-chain management: an empirical analysis

As integrated supply-chain management (SCM) is now at the epicentre of business transformation, firms are breaking down boundaries between internal functions, as well as between the enterprise itself and key partners in the value chain (e.g. customers, distributors, suppliers and carriers). One of the main goals of such new management approach is to get everyone in the supply chain into a common platform of logistics transactions and information systems. Against such background, the aim of this work is to analyse how and if port operators can face the challenge of higher integration, on the assumption that the higher the integration between the actors the higher the competitiveness of the whole supply chain. Accordingly, we adopted an SCM approach in the analysis of the port of Le Havre in Renaults supply chain. More specifically, we referred to the Lambert tri-dimensional model based on supply chains structure (actors), key business processes and links between actors. The field work—which mainly consisted of semi-structured interviews to Renault, logistics and port operators, and, finally, to the Le Havre Port Authority—was crucial to gather the needed information.

Supply Chain Management e competitivita portuale: nuove prospettive di analisi (di Marcella De Martino, Alfonso Morvillo) - ABSTRACT: Nel dibattito recente sulla competitivita portuale, grande rilevanza e stata data in letteratura all’approccio del Supply Chain Management quale nuovo paradigma per inquadrare strategie e posizionamento strategico dei porti. Il SCM sostiene lo sviluppo delle partnership tra gli attori della supply chain e considera l’integrazione delle attivita e delle risorse tra i vari attori lungo i processi di business la fonte del vantaggio competitivo. Applicare le categorie concettuali del SCM alla realta portuale risulta pero particolarmente complessa per la tradizionale conflittualita esistente tra gli attori della port community nella produzione del servizio. Alcuni autori, nel tentativo di superare tale complessita, hanno interpretato il ruolo del porto nelle supply chain attraverso le pratiche integrative realizzate dai Global player (principalmente compagnie di navigazione e terminal operator) nella gestione dei terminal, per la fornitura di servizi logistici oltre il trasporto. Tali attori, sebbene hanno un ruolo chiave per la competitivita del porto, non possono rappresentare l’unico soggetto d’analisi delle varie opzioni di sviluppo in quanto il porto deve fondare il proprio successo sullo sviluppo di attivita e risorse legate alle esigenze di altri utenti portuali, comprese le imprese manifatturiere del proprio hinterland. La definizione di un ruolo potenziale e pro-attivo del porto - inteso nella sua complessita - nell’ambito delle supply chain dei clienti del contesto competitivo, rappresenta l’obiettivo del presente lavoro che attraverso una review della letteratura in tema di SCM e di competitivita portuale, propone un nuovo framework teorico per inquadrare lo sviluppo portuale. Una prima considerazione che emerge dalla disamina della letteratura e che esiste un sostanziale gap tra i framework teorici e la possibilita di implementarli, almeno nel breve periodo, nella realta portuale. Difatti i modelli finora presenti in letteratura sono ancora nella fase dell’elaborazione teorica e la fase di implementazione empirica richiede un salto culturale soprattutto da parte dell’Autorita Portuale. Un ulteriore considerazione e che l’approccio del SCM determina quelle competenze differenziali e quelle caratteristiche dell’offerta di servizi che il porto puo e deve sviluppare al fine di promuovere lo sviluppo economico del proprio hinterland. Questa considerazione porta a ritenere che l’adozione dell’approccio SCM risulta particolarmente efficace per la definizione delle strategie portuali dei porti che svolgono una forte funzione di centralita rispetto al mercato locale. Partendo da tali considerazioni, al fine di inquadrare il framework proposto, il lavoro e strutturato in due parti principali. Nella prima parte di carattere teorico, vengono posti in rassegna le categorie concettuali del SCM, l’estensione del SCM ai network ed i relativi modelli per la definizione del posizionamento strategico. La seconda parte, incentrata sulla competitivita portuale, cerca di mutuare le categorie concettuali analizzate nella prima parte alla realta portuale. Questa sezione del lavoro e particolarmente delicata in quanto ciascun concetto non e considerato in modo univoco nella letteratura e la sua applicazione al porto risulta essere strettamente legata alle peculiarita degli stessi. Tenuto conto pertanto dello stato dell’arte della letteratura in tema di SCM e competitivita portuale e che il porto e una realta complessa, coinvolto in una pluralita di supply chain, ognuna delle quali rappresenta una specificita entita con specifiche esigenze da soddisfare, il framework proposto si basa sul concetto di value chain constellation, ispirandosi ad un modello di SCM con un approccio network per la definizione delle determinanti delle competitivita portuale. Secondo tale modello, il valore viene generato dallo sforzo congiunto degli attori portuali nel soddisfare specifiche esigenze di clienti – target, attraverso lo sfruttamento di differenti interdipendenze (sequenziali, pooled e reciproche) tra le supply chain. In tale contesto, ruolo determinante ricopre l’Autorita Portuale che e chiamata ad individuare quelle risorse, i cosiddetti critical assets, che a differenti livelli possono favorire lo sviluppo di relazioni inter-organizzative tra i vari attori portuali nel processo di creazione del valore per il cliente finale.

Value creation in the port: opening the boundaries to the market

In the era of fierce competition among ports as elements of value chain systems, the opening of the boundaries to the market represents a crucial challenge that port authority has to cope with, in order to guarantee a lasting economic and social development of the port and its hinterland. We propose a theoretical framework to analyse value creation in the port and its hinterland through two core concepts: resource allocation and interaction. We illustrate such framework with the case of the port of Naples and, specifically, the contribution of the port authority and other port business operators to the value creation process of Garofalo, an export-oriented firm located in its hinterland. A discussion and suggestions for future research are provided in the last section.

Collaborative innovation in tourism and hospitality: a systematic review of the literature

The purpose of this study is to provide a synthesis of the state of research on collaborative innovation in tourism and hospitality. It presents a systematic review of the academic literature, and provides insights into the specific issues addressed by studies in this area.,A search of major research databases with multiple keywords was performed to identify relevant articles up to 2017. A total of 79 articles were identified and analyzed according to the following criteria: location of the study, perspective of analysis, methodology, level of analysis and specific themes addressed.,Based on a qualitative thematic analysis, five groups of articles were identified: cooperative behavior of innovating firms, co-creation, collaborative networks for innovation, knowledge transfer and innovation policies.,This study contributes to making the current body of knowledge on collaborative innovation in tourism and hospitality more organized. The analysis of the different issues addressed by the literature could build the foundation for future research.,This study presents a comprehensive review of literature on collaborative innovation in tourism and hospitality. It can serve as a roadmap of literature for both academicians and practitioners, and help stimulate further interest.

The innovation capacity of small food firms in Italy

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the innovation capacity of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and micro enterprises through a theoretical framework that addresses the influence of some internal and external resources – derived from the literature review – on the development of innovation activities and on innovative firm’s results. Design/methodology/approach Based on a structured questionnaire, the empirical survey has involved 122 SMEs and micro enterprises of the most representative agrifood supply chains in the Campania region: dairy, wine, pasta and olive oil. The data have been then elaborated through the cluster analysis technique in order to explore any meaningful patterns that may exist in terms of the innovation capacity. Findings This study shows the existence of three clusters/innovation modes: collaborative innovators (CIs), non-collaborative innovators (NCIs), and non-innovators (NIs). Even though CIs represent 16.2 percent of the sample, this cluster shows an increased or stable revenue during 2011-2013 in comparison to the other two clusters. Research limitations/implications This study provides a static view in comparison to the longitudinal analysis which could have provided a more dynamic view of the innovation capacity of agrifood SMEs and micro enterprises. Originality/value This is the first quantitative study focusing on the factors related to the innovation capacity of agrifood firms in the Campania Region. The study specifically analyses the innovation capacity of SMEs and micro enterprises. Moreover, it offers a comprehensive analysis of internal and external drivers to innovation.
