Marcelo El Khouri Buzato

This article focuses on the theoretical development of a relational and critical perspective of new literacies/digital literacies framed by current issues in digital inclusion and technological innovation. It sets off from the notion that inclusion in late modernity is generated in a conceptual space bound by the triad inequality, difference, disconnection. Current theories and models (bottom-up and top-down) of technological innovation are looked into and are related to the inequality, difference, disconnection triad with a view to informing a critical analysis of technology-based educational innovation and, especially, the so-called Web 2.0.

Marcelo El Khouri Buzato

This paper describes, in a contextualized way, the relation between digital literacies and critical literacies based on the concepts of cultural transcodification and dialogism, by means of examples of interactions between the researcher and an automated conversational agent available on the WWW. It shows that this type of interaction can be considered dialogic in the sense of highlighting the ‘peopling’ of digital texts by two types of voices or discursive intentions: one related to rationality and the other to rationalization. The conclusion is that this hybridism of voices may be correctly used for a critical education in order to dismantle binary oppositions between technology and culture.

Towards an interdisciplinary ICT applied ethics: language matters

Marcelo El Khouri Buzato

This study seeks to support an interdisciplinary, theory-practice integrated work on the applied ethics of information and communication technologies (ICT). Current work on applied ICT ethics is of a disciplinary nature and seeks to apply traditional philosophical norms to novel situations that are not easily identified by analogy to previous cases. I propose an alternative view in which ICTs are seen as a moral environment and ethical agents are seen as human-computer hybrids (cyborgs) whose experiences acquire ethical value ecologically. To implement such a view, I propose employing two different kinds of semiotics: a semiotics of meaning-making that is open to the environmental effects of cyborg acts across scales, and a material semiotics that allows for interdisciplinary practitioners to recognize the modes of existence involved in the ethical issues and work out better means-ends relationships among the modes pertinent to each discipline.

Towards a theoretical mashup for studying posthuman/postsocial ethics

Marcelo El Khouri Buzato

Purpose This paper aims to propose a theoretical arrangement for the study of applied computer and information ethics carried out in an interdisciplinary and a democratic manner by which the information and communications technologies are seen as an ethical environment, and human-computer couplings are seen as hybrid moral agents. Design/methodology/approach New ethical issues emerge dynamically in such environment which must be interpreted according to human sentience and computer ontology. To attribute moral meaning to acts perpetrated by human-computer hybrids, a hybrid of two semiotics must be likely used that bridge the gap between signs and things from opposite directions. Findings The author argues that ecosocial dynamics and material semiotics can be harnessed together as in a theoretical mashup for that purpose, and that such harnessing will allow us to engage with a posthumanist/post-social ethics here and now. Originality/value The originality of the proposal resides in bringing hybridity to the center of the picture, forcing interdisciplinary teams to engage with one unified, even if hybrid, agency regardless of conflicting ontologies and epistemologies.

Remix and mashup designate textual forms, production techniques and creative methods that were developed in conjunction with the analogical reproduction techniques for music and film in the Twentieth Century. In the context of digital culture, in the face of automated editing and montage, and of greater flexibility in the recovery and circulation of media collections on a global scale, remix and mashup have spread as central elements of discursive practices that range from sheer entertainment to civic participation, to various forms of knowledge production. This study aims to contribute to a more meaningful integration of remix and mashup in the list of the objects of study in Applied Linguistics in two ways. Initially, we present a state of the art displaying the various concepts and ramifications of remix and mashup already established in the literature, highlighting the most significant differences between them. Then we put forward a taxonomy covering remix and mashup as textual products, production techniques and methods of creation, and we situate them in the overall ecology of transtextual relations applied linguists are already used to handling. In conclusion, it is recalled that this proposal does nothing but extend to the scope of digital culture a long tradition of studies on the strength of hybridity in cultural dynamics, and its potential for the formation of critical citizens capable of leading social change.Remix and mashup designate textual forms, production techniques and creative methods that were developed in conjunction with the analogical reproduction techniques for music and film in the Twentieth Century.
